So you're a long time ham, and you've just had the illusion shattered; your fantasy reality balls are touching, and Eldar are giving you the D while charging fees comparable to a Washington DC escort. All the old blame names are gone, there are no more scape goats, and now you're thinking of escaping yourself. But to where? To leave GW is to give up minis, because they are the only producer of minis, with their jewel-like objects of magic and wonder.

Better sit down and hold onto your preferred erogenous zone, because I'm about to blow your mind - not only are there other mini and game manufacturers out there, but the vast majority of them actually make better and cheaper games and minis! To help guide you on your way to freedom, here's a partial list of games by genre/scale you could escape to, some of which will even let you reuse a portion of your GW collection:

Sci Fi

Firestorm Armada (1:10000) and Firestorm Planetfall (10mm)

http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3253037

quote:

Firestorm Armada is a fleet combat game set in space, with a dozen different fleets nominally spread over two factions and fighting with escorts right up to dreadnoughts. Although v1 of the rules was panned for a variety of reasons, the recent v2 release has been a vast improvement

The rules are currently being used as a base to create a licensed version of a HALO fleet battle game, with Earth versus the Covenant

quote:

In this deadly, hard sci-fi setting, hordes of futuristic tanks, agile aircraft and hulking mech-walkers tear each other asunder with high-powered weaponry. Lasers burn across the tabletop, rail-gun slugs smash through armoured hulls and advanced cyber-warfare weapons hack through vital systems – the war zones of the distant future are no place for the faint hearted.
Firestorm Planetfall puts you in the role of a Grand Commander, orchestrating the manoeuvres of your chosen army. Each of your Battle Groups will contain several Helixes of stunningly-detailed 10mm scale miniatures, ranging from towering Leviathans to numerous bases of Infantry, all prepared to fight to the last under your command.

Star Wars: Armada and X-Wing (Indeterminate)

http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3657860

quote:

The X-Wing Miniatures game from Fantasy Flight Games puts you in the role of a squadron commander, leading a collection of Rebel or Imperial (or Scum & Villainy, starting with Wave 6) ships against an opponent in a tactical tabletop dogfight.

http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3658006

quote:

The big brother to the wildly successful X-Wing, this game adapts the dogfighting Wings of War rule system used by X-Wing and turns it into a fleet combat game between all your favourite Star Wars capital ships. This game is brand new, and only the starter box and wave 1 are out, but wave 2 has been announced and features the Imperial Star Destroyer and Home One, plus the new movies coming out mean more awesome ships to come in the future. Plus everything is prepainted, so just buy, minor assembly, read and play.

Dropzone Commander (10mm)

http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3699835

quote:

Dropzone Commander is a sci-fi tabletop wargame using 10mm scale miniatures. It is made by Hawk Wargames and focuses on urban combat. The game plays fluidly with rapidly shifting tactical situations thanks to the games focus on mobility as most units are deployed and redeployed around the battlefield via dropship. This becomes important as the game design and victory conditions are based around taking strategic locations or recovering objectives and often extracting them back off the table. This moves the focus away from simply killing plastic spacemans over to situations where you could out-manoeuvre an opponent who might possess greater firepower to snatch the win.

A spaeship based game set in the same universe, in planetary orbit, and designed by Andy Chambers, is currently in progress

http://www.hawkwargames.com/

Infinity (28mm)

http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3567828

quote:

Infinity is a science fiction skirmish-level tabletop miniatures wargame produced by Corvus Belli. Set approximately 175 years in the future, players enact covert operations and small-scale skirmishes between opposing forces of nations and/or mega-corporations. Infinity is played as a cutting edge, high tech firefight. It is set as a skirmish game, which means there are typically between 5-15 miniatures per side. The game is not played as a full scale war, but a group of special operatives fighting a lethal gun battle whilst attempting to achieve their primary objectives.

Deadzone, Dreadball (28mm)

http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3491381

quote:

Set in the future, the Warpath universe where Deadzone is set has humanity ruled over by various corporations, each seeking to maximise profit at all costs. As part of this they have massively expanded their sphere of influence and occasionally encounter alien artefacts. One particular artifact unleashes a devastating plague, mutating anyone who comes into contact and reducing them to ravenous shells of their former selves.

At this point Containment Protocol is instated. All navigation data of the surrounding area is deleted and a blockade is set up around the quarantine zone. It is known as a Deadzone.

Knowing that the planets resources are up for grabs, corporations and alien races descend on the planet, in defiance of the blockade to remove anything of value. Players command one of these strike teams.
Deadzone is played on a 2'x2' gridded mat with lots of lovely scenery on it. Each player takes it in turns to activate their models and give them orders to carry out. When it comes to attacking their opponents, each player rolls 3 dice and compares them to a stat. For shooting, every dice which rolls equal or higher than their "shoot" stat is a success, while the target being shot at must roll against their defence stat. Various things, such as cover or elevation will simply modify the number of dice you roll. The player with the most successes wins.
In addition, a larger and more familiar game using the same minis called Warpath is under development; v1, and a v1.5 written by goon Daedleh, of the rules can be played until the first proper release version is completed and kickstarted, hopefully in Q4 2015

quote:

Dreadball is a sports game set in the same universe, but where Bloodbowl is like American Football, Dreadball is like Ice Hockey. It has dozens of teams, league rules, two different ways to play - the original pro league, and the new "run by crime lords for carnage and profit" Dreadball Xtreme

Fantasy

Warmahordes (28mm)

http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3465762

quote:

It is a skirmish level miniatures game wherein your primary objective is to find the most awesome possible way to throw giant angry dinosaurs into giant pissed off steam driven robots and hopefully kill your opponents Warlock or Warcaster (the leader of your opponents forces on the table) on the way. Games are of a larger scale than Warhammer 40k or Warhammer Fantasy, meaning less dudes on the table, more emphasis on the movements and abilities of individual models, and much faster game play - including a tournament system that uses timed turns, which really makes things interesting.

The second version of Warmahordes came out a few years ago and really spiced up the game. It codified a lot of special abilities of the various factions so you didn't have 20 different versions of teleport to remember the nuances of, Privateer Press finally started making wicked-rad plastic miniatures, and has been drawing in new players all over the world at a furious pace. There has not been a better time to get into this game.

http://privateerpress.com/

Kings of War (28mm)

http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3491381

quote:

Like Warhammer, Kings of War is a mass ranked fantasy battle game. Unlike Warhammer, Kings of War is not a hot teaming mess of unbalanced bullshit, unending charts and rules to remember, or tremendously expensive in time and money. Kings of War is cheap, streamlined, fast flowing, and the upcoming 2nd edition has been expertly balanced thanks to public beta tests and the hard work of the Rules Committee, a group of the best tournament players who volunteered their time to Mantic. In addition to their own, for the most part common trope armies (Dwarves, Elves, etc) the Rules Committee will be writing balanced, tournament legal lists for most of the minis from all of the armies you're jumping ship from Warhammer with - how can it get any better than that?

Historicals

Historicals are in fact older than Games Workshop, and so incredibly numerous that you;re better off reading the OP in the Historicals thread, however it's worth mentioning:

Flames of War (15mm): Said to be 40k in World War 2, Flames of War takes that casual 40k approach to a historical game, but with a much more manageable 15mm scale - plus the fact that these vehicles are real world things means that dozens of manufacturers exist to keep the minis prices down.
Bolt Action (28mm): Designed by GW legend Rick Priestly, this game uses the proper amount of troops for the scale and does an excellent job of simulating squad level World War 2 combat
SAGA (28mm): Viking skirmish game by Gripping Beast. Vikings. Go now, as fast as you can.

Pulp, Punk, Horror, and Weird

Dystopian Wars (1:1200) and Dystopian Legions (28mm)

http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3253037

quote:

Set in Victorian-era Earth, where scientists exploring the south pole discovered a vast subterranean cache of alien technology, fundamentally altering history as we know it. Fighting on the land, in the air, and on the sea, some familiar and not so familiar nations struggle for dominance in a steampunk-esque world still rooted in the philosophies of 19th century Europe while blasting each other with lightning and heat rays. Wars depicts massive engines of war, Legions depicts the same battle at the squad level with soldiers and small vehicles
http://www.spartgangames.co.uk

Malifaux

http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3444848

quote:

Malifaux is a diceless, character driven miniatures skirmish from the good folks at Wyrd Minatures.

Malifaux is set in a fictional earth, similar to our own where magic exists. A breach in the fabric of reality has lead to the growth of magic, and battles between both factions of magic wielders from Earth, and the dark and violent locals of the world beond the breach

Malifaux uses a deck of cards to determine contested actions, known as Duels.

An Unopposed Duel involves flipping a card, adding the card's value to the appropriate model statistic, and checking if that equals or beats the target number.

An Opposed Duel is much the same, however the defender also flips a card and adds their appropriate defence statistic. If the attackers total is greater than the defenders total, the effect goes off.

A Spell Duel is similar again, but it has both a target number (casting cost) and can often be defended against as well.

I think you're drastically underestimating the change to Wraithguard. Against vehicles and MCs especially, it goes from a very strong short-ranged weapon to a gun that will absolutely devastate any hard target it shoots. Five of the old Wraithguard against, say, AV12 were an average of ~2.5HP removed and two rolls on the damage table; the new Wraithguard are instead an average of ~5HP removed and three rolls on the damage table. Even a single Wraithguard hitting a target has a very significant chance of killing a 3HP vehicle, and with the potential to six-out anything it hits, no vehicle can be considered safe from them, regardless of stats.

The combination of extremely effective high-RoF guns on the Jetbikes and Str D weapons that can murder heavier targets on the Wraithguard is incredibly dumb.

Whoop whoop, going to bust out the aspect warriors! As much as people bitch and moan about the D-weapons and fielding 40 scatter laser bikes, realistically I am not going to run out and buy any of those models. And while I know people who would/will, I have no reason to play with them unless I fancy entering a tournament. So really I just like that my aspect warriors and other traditionally sub-standard units will live up to the fluff a bit, rather than eldar being an exclusively vehicles-and-heavy-weapons force.

NEWS UPDATE: Exarchs are supposedly 2W now, from the same source that revealed that big packet of rumours. Very glad about that, looking forward to seeing the new spread of exarch/aspect warrior special rules.

Warp Spiders: Warp jump is the same as before, 6+2D6", lose a model on doubles. However now they can choose to jump (2D6") in the opponent's shooting phase after they are chosen as a target for a shooting attack. If they are out of range or LoS after this movement, the shooting unit cannot choose another target. If they jump in the opponent's shooting phase, they cannot Warp jump on their next turn.

Dark Reapers: 25 points. Re-roll to hit against anything that flies, turboboosts or moved flat out. All models ignore Jink saves.
