that's a good point but those countries also seem to have trouble generating enough workers who can think precisely and creatively. im not a believer in american exceptionalism but there does seem to be something to a larger percentage of americans being able to function independently. in college the chinese and indians in STEM had huge study groups of cheating - there were a few really smart kids up top and then a whole bunch of intelligent kids who nonetheless were unable to complete basic coursework. that may be a cultural thing which could change over time though. it just seems the geniuses are evenly distributed, but the people in the tier below that are disproportionately american. so i guess you're right, the question is when that 1/10 as productive number is reached

jesus this is the most repulsive startup yet

quote:

Rescue Forensics claims it "archives massive quantities of data from classified advertisement sites specializing in commercial sex ads." It gathers a lot of text, and even more nude and semi-nude photos. Then it turns all that over to the cops.

Rescue Forensics has said it's "making it harder for bad guys to hide on the internet." And while it's hard to quantify that claim, the company certainly achieved some success in attracting investors: Paul Graham's influential Y Combinator incubator selected Rescue Forensics for funding, after which TechCrunch dubbed the service the "software [that] eats sex trafficking." With Rescue Forensics, users can "#tracethetraffickers," as one of its own Facebook memes puts it.

From what I could learn, though, what Rescue Forensics appears to be selling is just one more tool to help cops track people engaged in sex work through their online activities.

Rescue Forensics purports to have brought on more than 100 law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

oh, my, god. Becky, look at her bitrate.
If they really wanted that prostitution tracker thing to succeed, just re-index it, then have people subscribe to the list (free subscription!) and it will hand-curate prostitutes for you, and then you pay using the app and they take a cut of it. Prostitutes who don't sign up and pay to be on the list don't get listings or business.

Then, in your terms and conditions, you're not providing prostitution services, because you're a technology company

counterpoint: indian and chinese (especially chinese) are loving awful dipshit hell fuckers because their education systems could be charitably described as "abominable". this is all of asia btw, just they're the most blatant. turns out when everyone fiddles the numbers there's an ever increasing incentive to keep the cheating humming along or else the honest students get hosed.

seriously there's a reason outsourcing isn't panning out.

the real threat to it labour is cheap eastern euro/russian labour; educated in a trustworthy(-ish) system, work for peanuts, and they usually know good english too so you can actually manage your own resources instead of hoping to god your order survives a few layers of translation

language barriers is a little under cutting it, even if everyone speaks perfect english meaning often doesn't get across. eastern businesses don't necessarily work like western ones so you have to translate the business logic you want as well. or better describe it.

i'd say one thing that sets american business apart from a lot of european ones is a sense of urgency. if they didn't get to it by 5pm, welp, it's time to go home and they can take care of it in 3 weeks after they get back from vacation, no need to hand it off to anyone else or let anyone else know they're out of the office until they get an out of office message. this is regardless of size of the problem, money that would be lost, projects delayed, etc etc etc.

i mean i get that work to live thing instead of american's live to work, but when there's no accountability / urgency to get anything done, it's really aggravating.

I'm in the office around 35-40 (never over) but i routinely have to answer emails and poo poo after hours but those are usually fwd to the appropriate person or say "will check tomorrow" or something since we have a euro office that will get a lot of mileage out of a quick reply instead of wasting a day. but they don't return that to us.
