So I just put myself though Starry Eyes. That film totally shits the bed towards the end. I was really liking the sinister build up but as soon as the body horror started I went massively off it. With all that build up I was really expecting a much better ending then the campy one that was given.

So The Babadook wasn't entirely what I was expecting, but more importantly, how did I know exactly what the "pterodactyl" stock sound effect was?! Is it actually the same sound effect reused in 800 billion movies or is there some simple audio technique that happens to create it?

I've been playing that game for literally decades and it is definitely not in there (it may be in Duke Nukem 3D). I'm sure it's in every sound effects library by now, but it had to have come from somewhere. I thought maybe it was Rodan, but that's not quite it from the clips I've found.

I was thinking imps from Doom also. Otherwise, loved the movie. The stock "poo poo lighting on fire" noise will also in my mind always be the sound of things coming out of the demon head at the end on Doom II.

One of the imp wakeup sounds is similar (15 seconds in if the url doesn't work), but not the same. The one I'm thinking of is higher pitched and more... dinosaury.

I am so bad at recognizing noises but I think in The Babadook's case that might've worked in my favor considering all the negative reactions about that effect. I thought it did a good job with everything else of being spooky and overwhelming!

The director's cut unfortunately replaces the effect with an exuberant "Yoshi!" Seriously though it's one bad sound effect in an incredible film. The movie was great and it was a transient "hey, it's that sound effect" moment. I was just watching a Korean film and I had the same problem. They use that terrible stock "clay pot smashing" noise that I am pretty sure is from the first Diablo. It is definitely in several of the Dynasty Warriors games. It shouldn't be a big deal, but every loving time it happened (a lot) it kinda of jerked me out of the movie for a second. Blowing up at Shannon was the one I was thinking of. In the other two, he's still at least trying to maintain his Clint Eastwood facade, it's just cracking a little; in that scene he's loving unhinged though.
