Interestingly, I heard this woman's sentiment from my friends/coworkers when the news first came out. Numerous white, educated, mid-30s professionals talking about how they had to get to Cuba before opening the borders 'ruined' it. They basically think it's a living museum and that's what makes it valuable. I got the sense they saw it as 1950s themed Disneyland and the people as costumed employees.

More importantly than that, they believe that Latinos are fungible and that (the children of) people who fled Cuba under loving Batista have anything in common with say, Mexican migrant workers, or Puerto Ricans. At least Castro-era emigrants can find common cause with Soviet defectors, I'm racking my brain to come with something remotely analogous to Batista-era Cuba.

I really like seeing conservative cartoonists treat immigrants and minorities as either savvy political allies or filthy mustache disease hordes depending solely and transparently upon the proximity of a general election and/or amnesty bill, and I hope this surefire tactic continues to be used.
