Just how many mistakes have you suffered on the way here?

An uncountable number, to be sure.
Presumably they just "retreat" though, and it doesn't affect the plot.

I think asking for entirely 2 dimensional characters might be a bit much though, considering that this game (and the series) pretty much has dozens and dozens of semi-generics. Keeping them easily identifiable as "the shy girl", "the punk" or "the caveman" is actually sort of helpful because otherwise they'd be completely unmemorable. Only the three main characters really need to be developed beyond a gimmick. And, well, they should've been.

I don't mind Avan since it's not his fault that his character development is delayed behind everyone else due to the way the game's structured. His time will come, eventually when he should have had some growth leading up to it.

Night10194 said it better than I could. I just want characters that have more to them than a quirk.

That is a problem when you add a lot of character, you either have a wide cast of characters or you have a limited group of well developed characters. It pretty difficult to flesh out everyone.

Still going by your recommendation I would go for the WRPG's approach, aka Avan wanting to go grab some liquor from outside of town to drink away the frustration of the ongoing rebellion. Zeri making effigies of GRA soldiers and executing them one by one, Sophia's maneater personality being more fleshed out beyond "Massage my leg". Helmut decking Zeri after the comment he made about imperial soldiers. And instead of wanting to be an idol, Anisette performs at the local cabaret at the Academy singing dirty cabaret songs for a thankless audience where the watered down wine only serve to make them aggressive drunks.

You're mistaking characterization and gravity for generic grimdark. What I mean by gravity is it's really tonally jarring to go instantly from 'Oh poo poo, rebels are ethnically cleansing a town' to 'OH BOY I HOPE GRYFFINDOR WINS THE HOUSE CUP' without the characters missing a beat. The rebellion is completely forgotten, not just in side missions but in plot. There should be some impact. They should at least be talking about why these fuckers are rebelling and speculating about what they can do to stop them! It doesn't mean the characters need to be grimdark, they just need to occasionally treat the war like it's actually there.

The reason I'm hard on this stuff is the seed of a good idea is there. Gallia secures its independence and a progressive head of state tries to make things better, but there's still a world war going on and the great powers are still meddling, and there's resistance and unrest based on war exhaustion and reactionary elements in the population. The army is already depleted from fighting the war, and so even fresh cadets are drafted to fill out the officer corps and find a harsh trial by fire. That's a cool idea! You could go really cool places with that! For instance, have the Empire leak to the papers that the Federation is propping up the Rebellion, like what happened with the Zimmerman telegram, and offer support to help 'Gallia maintain the honorable peace we agreed upon after your valiant struggle', if they'll just stop selling Ragnite to the Federals who are supporting barbaric revolutionaries anyway...

That kind of thing. There's real potential to the premise and it's frustrating to see it squandered for tropey bullshit.

First time in Randgriz, I take it?

Yeah! So this is where Cordelia lives, right?

That's right. We're on our way to a brief audience with the Archduchess now. You should feel honored. She's decorating you for your work escorting her.

Yeah, that's cool. Medals are cool. I just wish they were more... edible?

:sigh:

Avan, I'll only say this once. You represent your class and the academy. Do not embarrass us with any gaffes in front of the Archduchess.

Yeah, yeah, I hear you. Don't get your shorts in a twist. I'll be good.

*tweeting heard*

*tweets happily*

Ugh, fine. Just stay hidden in my pocket, okay?

It's time for our audience. Let's head to the castle.

*A moment later*

Hm? Why so tense, Brixy? It's not like you.

Avan, reasonable people set a bit nervous around royalty. You're just odd.

Avan Hardins, step forward!

Yes, sir!

For your exemplary service, I hereby grant you Gallia's Medal of Honor.

Thank you, Your Highness! I know the whole class'll be just thrilled!

Hee hee. It pleases me to see you as exuberant as ever.

Yup! I may not be smart, but I've always had pep!

*Jarde escapes from Avan's pocket*

My, how darling! Is this your bird, Avan?

Yes, ma'am. His name is Jarde.

The pleasure is all mine, Jarde. I welcome you to Randgriz.

*Happy tweeting*

I pray this war will soon end, so all Gallians, man and beast, can know peace. Know that I, too, will be fighting for that end, in every way I am able.

Yes, ma'am! But I hope you'll leave the dangerous stuff to us!

May your allegiance to Gallia never fail, Avan Hardins. Godspeed to you.

*later that day*

Well, it can't be possibly worse than Vicky. Right? R-right?

Okay uh, this is newish. He sounds like a New Jersey Rick Flair. Fuggetabout, Whoo! Otherwise, say hello to another Lancer.

We also get a couple medals for beating story missions. Still useless until we get like 20 of these to unlock special characters that ultimately are just generics.

It's time to say good-bye to Nichol for the rest of the game. Chloe's taking his spot as the party will slowly rotate in to get all the classmate missions. Oh god, I've only done 1 and there's still 30+ of them. :suicide:

Academy Cadets Awarded Medals!-Newspaper

Lanseal Academy cadets who repelled a rebel attack on Archduchess Cordelia in March have been honored for their actions. Avan Hardins (17) accepted the Gallian Medal of Honor on behalf of his squad members at a ceremony held at Castle Randgriz on the 3rd.

Hardins made special mention of the bravery of his team. As brother to the late Leon Hardins who served in the Gallian War, he is living up to his family name. He was eager to try all the local food, and we hope his hunger for victory is just as strong.

Avan, you were specifically told not to embarrass yourself....

Alicia's Cooking Class a Hit-Lotte Insider

Alicia Gunther held a cooking class in the mess hall kitchen on the 4th. Many people came to attend, with even professors and store staff showing up. This time cinnamon bread and apple tarts were on the menu, and all students were eager to learn.

Cosette Coalhearth said of her results, ''I got confused and ended up with cinnamon apple bread." After the class, Alicia said she was elated at the large turnout. PS. Cosette. how exactly do you set tarts and bread mixed up?

V2 (Artificial Valkyrur)-Encyclopedia

Armor worn by rebel special forces that replicates the ragnite-enhancing power of the Valkyrur. The lances they wield shoot beams with immense destructive power, but they require vast amounts of ragnite, making supply vehicles essential.

It is thought that Count Gassenarl took a secret army prototype and adapted it for rebel use. The V0 prototype was extremely powerful but expensive to implement, and is now worn by Dirk Gassenarl. The current V2 armor is a mass-produced version of the earlier V1.

Neighboring Countries

Gallia maintains a tense relationship with the East Europan Imperial Alliance, commonly referred to as "the Empire." The Emperor enjoys near limitless authority within the alliance. A conservative people, the Empire still lives by customs from medieval times.

The Atlantic Federation is an alliance of West Europan democracies, known as "the Federation." Popular uprisings in the late 18th Century gave birth to a number of new democracies, which then formed a loose alliance to oppose the Empire.

Castle Gassenarl

An old castle near the Kloden Wildwood in southern Gallia. The area has been ruled by House Gassenarl since medieval times. As the base of operations of the rebel commanders, it has been remodeled into a military facility with strong fortifications.

The natural fortress surrounded by forest and hills was defended against an Empire attack by army forces led by House Gassenarl two years ago. All attempts to assail it since the outbreak of rebellion have been met by formidable resistance.

I guess the castle's been defended by V2's to prevent it being seiged by tanks. But then, why didn't anyone tells us they had artificial Valkyrians...?

Good news, we've hit tier 5 in weapons. Bad news, they require grinding items that only started appearing this month. Ugggggggh

Also, I should probably start equipping the Rock Breaker part. It gives 50 front defense, but the real benefit is breaking up giant rocks on maps that usually lead to a shortcut.

Kill everyone. At least we're on a new map rotation.

The game is starting to be meta and throw tons of enemies at the 2nd deployment spot, which makes the obvious choice much easier and better.

The most notable thing was that I managed to A rank the mission despite stubbornly trying to kill this Mortarer head-on, wasting 4 CP. The game's also at a point when my Scouts can't one-turn kill Lancers anymore, which is a big problem. And I already have the highest tier rifle, so Scouts are slowly becoming just mobile grenaders.

I should probably stop trying to get A ranks, because my units are barely catching up to the enemy scale without grinding.

W-Well, now you know. Hand it back.

Can love bloom on the battlefield...? High school battlefield?

He designed the tank the seneral used, too, right?

...I see. When you're done reading it, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

It's a defense mechanism to reconcile the preconception of race with the fact that individuals of that race the person knows intimately don't conform to them. My grandpa was the same way. Hated the Japanese (he served in WWII) but was friends with 'properly assimilated' Japanese-Americans.
