Super fun. It's about 340 lbs or so fully fueled which makes it 80-120 lbs lighter than the superbikes/supersports. It also super super narrow. The geometry is pure sportbike but the ergos are a bit more relaxed. Given the light weight and chassis geometry you'd expect it to be super fast side to side but it's actually quite stable. The seat is the same height as most sportbikes at 32.3 inches but the footpegs are a touch lower than the superbikes making it pretty accommodating for long legs. Personally, I like high and committed rearsets so I'll likely switch the footpegs for the RC390 cup ones. 43 hp is plenty sufficient and the motor has a good midrange but if you're coming from a superbike it does feel down on power. You need to work the gears a bit more. The bike would be even better with maybe 20 more hp but the power to weight is already class leading among the R3 CBR300 Ninja 300 etc. Suspension is compliant as noted in many reviews and at 180 lbs I didn't have too many complaints so far about the suspension. We'll see once I push it a bit more. Brakes are a bit soft compared to radially mounted monobloc double disc fronts of the superbikes but they are adequate and I won't be able to really opine until they bed in and I use them a bit more. It is a bike that's obviously built to a price point but it doesn't seem too cheaply built at all.

It's super fun to ride since it's so small and light with adequate power. I'm having a tremendous amount of fun even inside the speed limits on back roads, I never even use 6th on my MV but on the KTM I can use all the gears. I'm supposed to keep it below 7500 rpm for break in but it'd going to be tough. It's always been my dream to own a Ducati Supermono, the 61 hp 277 wet weight single cylinder race bike but so few were ever made and now they command $150,000 prices. The KTM could have more power, better brakes, better suspension but at $5499 it's as good an attempt as anyone has managed at that price point to give us a Supermono.

If that was available last year when I got my Ninja 300 I might have got one. Very envious right now.

Only advantages to the ninja I can think of:
  • Looks better
  • Slipper clutch
  • Possibly more reliable?

Yeah, they're just embarassing. Mind you replacements are cheap and easy to fit (and a good first Fisher-Price My First Bike Mod for any new spanner-twirlers out there). As with all mods though you do run the risk of continually trying to one-up yourself - I keep wondering where I can mount this...

You own, that owns, and I personally think its a loving stellar idea. That said, 42 kilos is a bit rich for me.

Two people suggested I replace the exhaust on the ninjette and i was very seriously considering a train horn (there's a bunch of youtubes of them being mounted on pickups and the like.

If I hadn't crashed (maybe a bunch of noise would have made the guy realise i was coming, and the crash might have been avoided v0v) and had to scrap the bike, I'd still be working out how to mount a small air compressor. I figured I could point the train horn cone downwards behind the radiator and have the compressor under the pillion seat or similar.

I have a two brothers exhaust on the new bike, so I can just race the engine a little for a bit of noise.

I might consider the horn just for the sheer fun of it, but, I gotta keep my budget in check for a little while yet. I like the system the banshee has where the normal comedy horn works if you only tap at it, but if you hit the button for more than 1/5 of a second it engages the real deal.

Fwiw, I was also considering an mp3 solution so I could use any sound (screaming children, angry expletives, fart noises), but 120dB+ speakers aren't very compact or waterproof I think.

The new RC390 spec includes a slipper clutch. The first batch of them that arrived don't have them but should have them shortly. To be honest, I'm not even sure if mine has one because I always rev match and haven't tested for wheel hop yet

There is pretty much no better time to be in the market for a low displacement sport bike: KTM RC390, Yamaha R3, Honda CBR300R and Ninja 300 are all good choices. It wasn't that long ago that the only option was the Ninja 250. Here is some RC390 porn from KTM:

To be fair here I actually went and cleaned tires, degreased the engine, and soaped the metals and plastics today.

And then it rained, so whatever I missed will hopefully be washed away. Previous owner kept it in pretty good shape mechanically but I'm pretty sure the road grime in some places is as old as the bike itself.

I'm going to be de-rusting and painting the exhaust Tuesday/Wednesday, might get some wraps too. Being stubborn and masochistically independent led to cold weather riding due to lack of a car, thus I was out on the roads before all the salt was washed away and the pipes are pockmarked with rust from where they meet the motor all the way down to where they bend back. It started last fall, and I should have nipped it in the butt then but I was new to bike maintenance and didn't realize how big of an issue it was going to be.

Considering the resale value on Ninja 250s it'll be interesting to see how much this new generation of bikes holds value. I'm putting money away for something newer next year. The 650 is fun, and I don't think I need or want anything bigger displacement wise...but I do want something a bit more agile, which got me thinking about a potential build, I'll have to do some design work on it and probably quite a bit of reinforcement but...

The friend who sold me the GR650 pieced it together from a mechanically sound/cosmetically awful bike and a cosmetically sound, mechanically 'meh' bike. Both '83 Tempters. He's hassling me to buy the other one for $100USD, I'm going to let him sit on it for another week or so while I make room in the garage and offer him $50...considering at $1500 I feel like I overpaid a bit for the Tempter and the ad on Craigslist had originally listed both bikes at that price. It'll be nice, because most of the stuff is still good, I think the other engine has a bad crank or something.

While he was looking into parts and whatnot he discovered that...being the development platform for the GSXR line pretty much everything is a bolt on swap for the first 2 generations of the busas.

So, providing Engine/Transmission can be made to fit without compromising structural integrity I'm going to swap out the powertrain from a GSXR750 into the spare bike, same with the swingarm (rear springs are nearly identical save for the adjustable pre-load on the Tempter...which is still one of the things I love about that bike). Then it's just a matter of 16 inch wheels and tires and fine tuning and I will have created the missing link between the two bikes. Just need to cruise insurance sales for a 750 and I'll be on my way.

Also, In other rad news...found a guy in Colorado that's willing to give me the fuel tank off his Tempter @Cost of shipping.
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=823512
Because he doesn't need it anymore after an apparently awesome build.

So Color Swap on the stock Tempter is happening. Think I'm going to try and do something similar to the 2015 Vulcans...White Black Green is super rad looking especially when it's flat.

http://www.piaa.co.uk/lamps/lampshow.asp?ID=horn is probably the best bang beep for your buck (with a £2 SPNO relay so you don't just blow your fuse the first time you use them) - considerably louder than a car horn and light enough you can almost certainly hang them off your existing bracket with minimal additional hardware (I just used some steel shelf brackets).

You can get horns that play samples off ebay (they were popular with couriers for a while) but they're not actually that loud.

Yeah, I was expecting it to look retarded on me in the pics, but it's not too huge. The reach isn't as bad as it looks, but the seat is slick enough that I end up all the way forward unless I concentrate on gripping the tank with my knees.

I loving love the bike. There's some awkward stuff I need to figure out due to my size, like the pegs basically push right against my calves when I have my feet down, and putting the kickstand down is a fuckin' drama, but when I'm moving it's amazing. Rides like it's on rails and sounds like it's going to eat the world.

Thanks! It wasn't my first choice of a bike (I really was looking for an 1100 EVO with ABS, or a 2010 M1100 ABS) but the sellers in the area were weird as hell and wanted $10k or more for the non-S model EVOs when the bike, brand new, was something like $11.9k. It was hard to justify paying that when you could get a brand-spanking new M821 that technically has more power and better service intervals for like $1k more. This was a much, much better price and I was able to snag it from a guy who took really good care of it. I'm looking forward to finding a good suspension shop in the area and having them set it up for American Goon (aka "a Fat-rear end").
