THE RESERVED LIST! THE RESERVED LIST! I CANNOT SHUT UP ABOUT THE RESERVED LIST!

Sulecrist posted:

For the record, the only 40k games I play are collaborative, with people I know and usually in the context of a campaign. Unbound is fine and Forgeworld is fine because we aren't really playing to win. I will never go to another 40k tournament--if I want to be competitive, I can (and do) play Warmachine, which doesn't have anything like comp and is specifically designed and balanced for civil but adversarial play. 40k sure as poo poo isn't.

Edit: and with regard to the Olympics, it isn't judged by the competitors themselves or by their friends. That's a pretty huge difference, and it's also what to a certain extent differentiates stuff like the LVO and Adepticon limitations from those imposed upon a local community.

I really like the "collaborative" descriptor-- that vs. "competitive" really sums up what I'm looking for in my 40k experiences these days.

Yeah, definitely. To me, playing 40k competitively seems like playing D&D competitively. Sure, if you pick the right edition it might not be horrible, but you'll probably have to make some rules that invalidate peoples' ideas and it completely misses most of what makes the game so great. Plus when you restrict things in 40k, you're doing more than limiting character concepts; you're restricting hundreds of dollars' and hundreds of hours' worth of product.

Last page, I jokingly compared 40k to War with porno cards, but a better comparison would probably be to Eat Poop You Cat. It's much more fun if the mechanics' core goal is subordinated to the game's social goal.

There is actually competitive Dungeons and Dragon games at cons and they are super super fun. Especially when there's like a gorgeous board etc.. set up. There's a couple of variations , Backstabber style where you and the others have to get out but you can kill your party members to get more loot. Or cooperative team play where its your team vs. other teams in the same dungeon.

They're super fun.

Moola , I've played Dungeons and Dragons with both Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. ( At cons)

I dunno if these types of tourney's are still common though ,but I'm pretty sure Gencon still has one.

only because the rules are garbage. There's nothing wrong conceptually with playing a game like 40k competitively, just that the game itself is set up to make that a bad experience for everyone

I know what you mean here, but I think 3rd edition is a bad example of this. Yes, the original rulebook came with basic lists for all of the factions and the rules. However, 3rd got really bloated with tons of Chapter Approved articles and the trial assault rules. If you wanted to play the current, official version of the game you had to track all that stuff down.

So, uh, where'd you get that? I think I need that for my Fire Raptor.

Got it on eBay a while ago. Just search skull airbrush stencil. There's plenty.

Well I like that they're moving toward the "Friendly" tournament format , which seems to be more enticing. 40k Tournaments can be super fun but really it's just a excuse to go play 40k for 4 days straight or go to the Con to play on the open play tables and demo games etc..

My plan is to bring Deathmarks with a D- Lord and a squad of Heavy Destroyers. Pretty sure the Deathmarks wound on a 2+ when deep striking in works on Gargantuan regardless of their 6+ sniper rule since it's a special rule .D- Lord Giving them Reroll 1s from preferred enemy.

Space Marines can kill with Drop Podding Grav Centurions.

The Blood Angel side outweighs the Tyranid side by about 200 points I think, so more like 700/500. If you don't have much invested in 40k, it has the rulebook and formations and such for everything in it, I say go for it.

I suppose snipers in general always wound on a 4+ right? then again the chance of them saving is pretty high so it isn't reliable. Grav-Cents, or a couple squads of bikers with Grav/Combi-Grav could likely put the hurt on one. Also, a Lascannon team might be able to put a couple wounds on one per round, but yeah that is still a bit of time to burn through 6 wounds. I don't know what else you would do other than tarpit it...

nope; sniper wounds on 6, as does poison, thanks to it being a garg creature.
It also has FNP, and will always be able to have at least 5+ cover due to being able to place it's toe in some crater somewhere.

Gargantuan creatures are only wounded on a 6 by sniper an poison shots, but the Deathmarks have a special ability to always wound on a 2 + the turn they arrive from deep strike.

Ah, forgot that it applied to both Poison and Sniper attacks, I don't use the later much so the other was the only one that stuck in my head.

Yeah, I guess you are boned unless you have Grav as a Space Marine, since you aren't really in the business of tarpitting. Imperial Guard don't really have anything that is going to effect a Wraith Knight, and with their normal BS their Lascannon teams are going to be missing 50% of the time, followed by +5 cover, and +5 FnP it isn't worth your time. Might as well bring conscripts with a Commissar and just tie them up, if you can get there.

Something I think would be nice in tournaments, would be to allow a sideboard much in the same way magic works. Something small like a 500 point sideboard force that you can sub in depending on what army you think you might be against.

I was thinking Chaos forces have a lot of ID and Fleshbane stuff, so they could put the hurt on a Wraith Knight. Of course this likely means dumping even more points into a Demon Prince or whatever than the Wraith Knight itself cost your opponent.

A Daemon Prince of Nurgle hopped up on Biomancy can own it pretty hard if it can somehow get the charge off which isn't likely. The other option is trying to get maybe some of the other Nurgle stuff on it. Lemme dig up me book.

No, but that Evesor looks awesome, really like that . Daemon Prince : Nope, the Plaguesword is poisoned 4+ , so unless he got Biomancy or the Fleshbane ability it'd only wound on a 6.

It is really about the time you spend trying to kill it, heck like the drop pod list you had from earlier with all the Marines sporting melta-weapons. Those Marine squads cost a good 200+ points when you count their drop pods, and those melta-guns only have a 50/50 chance of even wounding the Wraith Knight. I am not saying they couldn't handle it in time, but unless you divert a ridiculous amount of firepower towards it, it won't die anytime soon it seems like just assaulting in melee would be more effective at that point. All sorts of stuff that will work against a Imperial Knight is going to be much less effective against a Garg Creature. All the Melta has a chance of shedding multiple hull points from a Imperial Knight, but a Wraithknight is only going to take one wound at a time. Same applies for Lascannons and such, you can manage penetrating hits against a Superheavy to at least get a more than single hull point per shot.
