Sorensen is complaining about cars again

I gotta say though that as a driver frequently annoyed at cyclists taking up too much space and going too slow I agree 100% with her proposed solution. In principle. In practice it's completely infeasible on a large scale in urban areas because we don't have the space for them. But it'd still be cool if all those cyclists were somewhere where they weren't in my way!

Two jerk opinions I have about cyclists.

1) Cyclists are either "small cars" or "humans with wheels." They can't be both.
2) I actually live in an area with a lot of mixed walk/bike paths, and about 75% of cyclists treat runners/walkers the way cars treat them. It very much seems like a ha ha now I get to be the rear end in a top hat! thing.

Both of these can be fixed with comprehensive transportation plans, IMO. Which is why they won't be.

As someone who lives in a place with actual functioning bike/transit infrastructure, the notion of urban areas that have no room for bikes because people need all the transport space for cars is absolutely baffling to me. I haven't driven a car in six years.

Oh, we have room for bikes. What we don't have room for is dedicated bike paths in urban areas that weren't planned with them in mind and are already really dense with other things that are not bike paths (like, say, buildings). I am 100% in favor of more bike lanes though.

If he wanted a bigger bonus he probably shouldn't have spent a quarter of the year on vacation. With that bonus, management was probably trying to force him to quit or be sacked anyway; he's clearly finished in the city now. At least he still has affordable healthcare :unsmith:

Of course it's not sincere.

Even if it weren't obvious to begin with, nine times out of ten the person in a political cartoon expressing an opinion is supposed to be seen as dumb and crazy.

That cartoon is in response to claims that people were retiring in large numbers right after Obamacare took effect because they had only been hanging onto those jobs for the healthcare benefits before, as opposed to quitting in protest over Obama's socialist fascist Islamism or whatever. Rob Smith Jr thinks this is a silly idea, because who would ever leave their million-dollar jobs for something as stupid as Obamacare? (the existence of non-million-dollar jobs at no point factored into his analysis.) Rob Smith Jr is that dumb.

There are so many things wrong with this logic that I can't even fathom how a grown adult who presumably passed the bar exam could continue with it long enough to explain it in public :psyduck:

e:
I think it can be summed up as "gay marriage means fewer married women, because (a) all of those happily-married gay men would otherwise be trapped in loveless marriages to women and (b) there is no such thing as lesbian marriage because 'gay' is right there in the name, and unmarried women have more abortions than women trapped in loveless marriages to gay men because THOSE women don't get laid at all"

and as a cyclist I would LOVE to not be in your way. I either have to be illegally biking on the sidewalk or risking death on the road. I make a judgement call based on the quality/width of the sidewalk and the presence of cops/pedestrians.

Both of these can be fixed with comprehensive transportation plans, IMO. Which is why they won't be.

But cyclists are both. They are faster, wider, and longer than any person walking on the sidewalk, but they are also smaller, slower and lighter than any car on the road. And if there's no bike lane, cyclists have to make a choice which is safer for them, be the biggest, heaviest most dangerous thing on the sidewalk, or be the smallest, slowest most in danger of being hit thing on the road. Depending on the road, depending on the sidewalk, sometimes it's a changing answer on which is more safe. It's just a reality that they are kind of both and neither of those two things at the same time.

The solution is separated bike lanes on roads with high speed limits, and low speed limits on roads too narrow for bike lanes so the bikes don't slow people down that much. It's really not some impossible pipe dream, it's certainly a lot easier and cheaper to do than most infrastructure projects we manage to do every day.

As a motorist, I hate cyclists, and as a cyclist, I hate motorists. I'd just be happy with sufficiently wide shoulders that aren't riddled with cracks and covered in debris, then maybe we could all be a little happier.

Big "maybe" though, a couple years ago a friend of mine was scraped up and bruised from having to dive off her bike into the ditch because people think it's funny to swerve towards people on their bikes. Unless that's been replaced with rolling coal or whatever.
