Halloween Jack posted:And not only did they issue the challenge, but when Vince didn't show, they actually staged the "match" on PPV at Slamboree 1998. Bischoff did a pro wrestler entrance, dressed in a jacket and jeans (and hand-wraps, I think), and walked down the ramp while throwing phantom punches at the camera like a competitor from one of the early UFCs. When Bischoff announced the match wouldn't happen the WWE sued for false advertising on the grounds that in wrestling, if you say something isn't going to happen? It probably is. They won. God bless America.

Halloween Jack posted:For the benefit of MMA posters who haven't heard about the Brawl for All: Two other great things about Brawl For All: 1) The announcers had no idea how to deal with this. I mean, they couldn't acknowledge that wrestling is normally fake and this wasn't, so they couldn't even describe why this should be something special. So they had to be excited for some reason about there being special scoring and weird rules for a match. They also would occasionally blurt out something about mixed martial arts. They had just had to wink-wink nudge-nudge about the whole deal since they couldn't even get to the root of what was supposed to make this interesting. 2) The crowd loving HATED it. So much. Every match was booed or met with chants of "boring" unless it was two guys swinging wildly at each other (at which point they would be gassed about 20 seconds in). This was a thing that no one wanted to see except for Vince McMahon.

No Brawl for All chat is complete without mentioning that Bart Gunn was expected to put up a fight against Butterbean based on a couple knockouts against people with no legit shoot fighting experience. Things ended as one would assume.

36, apparently. Most notable thing I've heard so far is that Reebok hosed up the gear for him too and misspelt his name, but he's going by CM Punk in the UFC too. He had no input on it whatsoever either. So much for a deal for the fighters.

That "The Time Is Now" huge groundbreaking press conference that turned into "we didn't get the deal signed yet lol" was supposed to be the CM Punk signing announcement. Somehow that would have been even more underwhelming than what happened.

Like it made perfect sense: "Oh you beat our guy did you? Well now you have to fight Butterbean fucker" But no they actually thought Gunn had a shot in that fight and wanted him to win.
