I realize that, say, Kyle’s show is infinitely better than mine, because he’s got a lot more experience in the medium. I try to center my show around the things I have experience doing: improvisation and writing. The jokes in my episodes are written down the first time I see the movie, and the criticisms I offer are usually based on the movie’s plots.

I think the Internet video audience tends to prefer reviews of stuff they’ve already seen because they’re not really looking to hear someone else’s opinion, they’re just looking for someone else to validate their own opinion. I almost never cover well-known movies, so the most popular ones for me have always been the ones that have boobs in the preview image.

When I look for reviews to read/watch it is for a couple reasons:

1: To see if it is something I might want to watch.

2: Big fan of the reviewer.

3: I want to know more about it but don't have the time to see the thing so I can at least have the Cliff's Notes version.

4: To see someone cover something I like/dislike and want some other viewpoints.

The problem with how damned partisan people are about every loving thing these days is what seems to make #4 the one I am least like most folks on. Every consumer product is PERSONAL IDENTITY and if you don't like/hate it exactly as everyone else does you are so evil n poo poo. I've been called incredibly negative by more than a few people even when they can see my damned writing and I have to basically tell them to reread what I just wrote and in general they then apologize. If they aren't still raging about THING I just spent entirely too many words writing.

(But I work at a casino and try to people watch a bit wherever I go. The amount of people incapable of reading simple instructions in large print right in front of their faces is frightening. Hell, talk to anyone in technical support or a medical person or just about anyone who has to deal with anybody. People not be paying attention to jack poo poo to the point I am amazed roads aren't just full of car wrecks every day.)

Why the gently caress do people just want their groupthink opinions spat back at them in exactly the same way they think? Folks can't think for themselves or maybe get new insights as to why they like/dislike a thing? I know GBS has a running meme mocking the South Park "Truth somewhere in the middle" thing but.. drat!

How do yall reviewers manage to deal with such nitwits who inevitably probably freak out at you guys and gals constantly for not giving them exactly what they already think/care about?

I've just done a couple LP videos/comic strips and written blog reviews and some of the fanboy feedback makes me want to slap more people than I already want to. You pro folk whose livelihoods kind of depend on viewership must be constantly looking for the nearest stress ball to crush.

Unless there was another one I think that response was more along the lines of 106 pages. It was also obnoxious as all hell to read too. Nothing is more cringey then a dumb person trying to sound smart and the guy seemed scandalized at the very concept of editing a video around a thesis statement. That and the patronizing way he uses the name Mike to refer to RLM in general like he's talking to a ten year old.

South Park often shows both sides of an argument as obscene caricatures and then has a speech at the end about how the truth is somewhere in the middle. Sometimes it works, usually not so much.

Or to put it another way, why pick a side when you can just sneer at the lot of them?

Yea I think it started around that cigarettes episode where they made the cigarette company basically Willy Wonka and poo poo like 'oh without the slaves you used to pick tobacco we wouldn't have our black friends!' stuff while the anti smoking people were shadowy plotting liars who wanted to murder Cartman and claim smoking did it, and at first it was super clearly a joke, but then the moral was straight up 'yea maybe smoking is bad but these guys are also bad soooooo'

South Park targets people indiscriminate of the political spectrum, in theory the Daily Show isn't any different; the difference is that when Jon Stewart does it, it's a matter of "we make fun of stupid wherever we see it", whereas South Park often comes off as "anybody with a strong opinion on something is dumb".

This is pretty much the main issue. It's not taking shots at both sides, that is really not an issue at all, both Liberals and Conservatives do dumb poo poo, but this stupid idea that literally every single issue, no matter how clear cut, is between two sides full of raving lunatics and the ~truth is in the middle~.

I'm sort of inured to politics, anyway. I used to be very interested, but I can't find it in myself to be bothered nowadays. I mean, there's a general election in a fortnight, and while I'll certainly vote (because one should always vote), but I feel disengaged otherwise. Not sure when it happened, really, but it did. I imagine a lot of it is down to the implosion of NI21 the day before the first election they contested. That was disappointing. I mean, they were maybe a bit too pro-EU for me, but they were something different.

Sorta breaks down when you realize that the political "middle" varies from place to place(does truth vary depending on geography?) and American politics are way way over on the right compared to most countries, so our left is far closer to their right.

Or if you just watch almost any episode and listen to the stupid poo poo they say. Like how they had that one episode where a character learns that he shouldn't say friend of the family because he really does not understand how that feels because he is not black(going from him saying "I understand" to the black guy to "Actually, I don't."), and then later had an episode about how it's totally ok to call someone a fag if they're acting like a fag

Generally speaking, "centrist" in Britain or Europe means "centre-left", while in America it means "centre-right". Both of the US parties are large tent organisations so you'll obviously see a lot of variation within them (perhaps less so with the GOP at the moment; all the liberals in the GOP died out when the right-wing won in 1980), and the same is true of, say, Britain, where the Labour Party was home to Tony Blair on one hand and Tony Benn on the other.

I don't subscribe to the notion which insists that the Conservative Party here in the UK are Basically Democrats, but I think if David Cameron was from New England, he'd fit right in next to John Kerry and Andrew Cuomo.

There is also the issue is that saying America is just "more right" than other countries is vastly over simplifying. For instance American immigration politics tend to be rather left wing compared to the European version.

The main problem is the wait time caused by quotas, but it's much easier than somewhere like say Denmark. It's also considered inappropriate in most regions to complain about any immigration aside from illegal immigration.

Not moreso than most of western/northern Europe and the UK, also we allow stuff like 'if you're born here you're American end of story'. And as said over here at the very least the only immigrants you can get open support for making GBS threads on is 'illegals' instead of just saying "TOO MANY BLACKS" so I'd say we're a good bit more left than many European countries there.

That episode was so frustrating. They tried to redefine "fag" to mean "obnoxious person who drives a Harley", without ever questioning why they wanted to use that particular slur. They used it to attack the masculinity of the bikers, too, so it wasn't divorced from its context, but they still tried the 13-year-old excuse of "it really means a bundle of sticks".

To be fair while those that are here already should receive amnesty/path to citizenship we should fix the system to make it difficult to be undocumented in the future.

I would reference some of ha joon Chang's work but I'm on my phone right now. I just know that most of the benefit for lax immigration laws are for employers more than anything. You can also argue that it hurts other countries by draining them of skilled labor.

The problem are the long wait times making illegal immigration attractive. There is nothing wrong with giving a work visa to everyone who applies, and granting citizenship to those that stay for at least a year. The problem is with employers abusing undocumented workers and paying them less than minimum wage.

I find that conservatives are much easier to mock, but it just doesn't have the same kind of visceral satisfaction (a reaction I can't adequately explain) that comes with liberals getting slagged off.
