For my birthday a few days ago I went to Paradise Wildlife Park in Hertfordshire and hand-fed some Red Pandas, it was amazing. There were 4 of them - mum, dad and two cubs. We fed them pear chunks and they were very gentle when they took the pieces fromour hands. The keeper said that they didn't like being stroked so we probably shouldn't stroke them, which was unfortunate as they looked very strokable. All in all we spent about 30 minutes in their enclosure, with them ambling around us eating pear and bamboo. They are excellent climbers but terrible jumpers. Jumping looks like such an effort for them. Huge paws/claws too, I imagine they could put up a decent fight. Took a whole bunch of pictures, which I'll post up later.

I'm always reluctant to post pictures like this because in a lot of cases, when pandas lose their fur it's because of bad zookeeping i.e. improper diet, poor temperature control, they're stressed out because they're right next door to the lion enclosure. Then there's pandas like Cha-cha who are just going ragged because they're up there in years. Can't know for sure because I found this on a Japanese blog, but Japanese zoos are generally pretty well kept, so I'm hoping that's the case. I couldn't pass it up because it shows just how much of a red panda is fluff. Like a full third of their mass.

Could also be that their buddy goes a little overboard with the social grooming.

Silver Alicorn posted:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_pobFGjCbU&hd=1 They don't seem very good at eating things. And the way they just ignore dropped food seems weird. A cat or a dog will go after dropped food, sometimes obsessively. Red pandas seem to treat dropped food as simply gone much faster.

They probably just don't want to jump down six feet when the zookeeper is already offering another grape. But there's also probably some fundamental psychological differences given that they're adapted to a very abundant food source. Check out some of the other feeding vids though, when just one of them gets an apple slice there's usually 2 more trying to take it until they get their own.
