I think I said it right after last episode -- that fade-to-black was the last we'll ever see of Martha, and this episode will pick up with the FBI going "Where's Martha?" Phillip knew he couldn't break up with her and let her go back to her parents. Especially once he showed her what he really looked like. Pulling off the wig was just letting her see him as himself at least once before she died.
