While Philip blurs into the background, yeah.

I am not sure how I feel about this season. Individual scenes and the performances were fine as always, but I think having a 4th season greenlit so early made the season lack urgency. The slow-burn nature of the show is kind of getting in the way. If you think about it, the only plotline resolved was the anti-Stinger operation.

I agree, I was surprised to discover last week that we were already at the season finale because it felt like only a few things of much importance had happened.

That said, the Paige storyline was some excellent stuff, and has set up things for season 4 that I'm very excited about.

Yeah. Like the Soviet Union is going to fund Pastor Tim's Megachurch venture, which will serve to disillusion Paige about the merits of Christianity.

Was Elizabeth's mom living in East Berlin? There was mention of Liz and Paige being smuggled "across the border", but was it said that she was in Berlin the whole time or are they treating it as though they were smuggled into the USSR to see her?

The Center brought her mother from her home to West Berlin rather than risk blowing Liz's cover getting them across and then back over the border. Every single person going over the border in those days in either direction were photographed heavily, and scrutinized more closely than any place else. Disguises wouldn't have worked, and they weren't about to show a 15 year old one of their ~sekret~ tunnels.

Thanks, I figured it stayed in Berlin. I didn't think they were suggesting (and I've just seen the scene all the way through, caught bits and pieces the first time through because I was tied up) they came all the way from the Russian border, though as ridiculous as that sounds, Justified always treated Lexington and Harlan as if they were 20 minutes apart.

It's only about 15 hours from Smolensk to Berlin by car. Presumably they knew a few days in advance Elizabeth was going to Berlin.

Thing is that I really don't think Pastor Tim is riding the "Moral Majority" strain of 80's religious movements. There's the whole Latin American Liberation Theology in the early 80's as well; this is only 3 years post Oscar Romero and The Maryknoll Sisters.. there was a very strong Socialist strain going through many churches at the time. So Tim might not actually be the perfect ally for Paige.

Yeah, it's been floated that Pastor Tim's a support agent that not even Phil and Liz know about, but honestly that just feels too damned 'twisty' for me, and I want to trust the writers more than that, since it's sort of a 'retread' of what they did with Kate and Jared.

I don't know how I feel about Paige's reveal to her pastor. I just don't see how her arc could continue in any believable fashion. Philip and Elizabeth are going to kill Pastor Tim, but then what? Are we really supposed to believe that Paige will forgive her parents for killing her moral guide and confidant, and come to terms with committing treason in any reasonable period of time? A season of Paige living in fear of her parents is not something I'm looking forward to.

I'm going to dismiss the possibility out of hand because that would be pretty pointless (much like the apartheid storyline this season yeah I said it) (e: and when I say pointless, I don't mean stupid, you can make your own judgment on that, I just mean it adds nothing to the narrative outside of some flimsy all-show-for-Paige thing. But to be fair, even the person who just suggested it knew he was making it up)

It would be awesome if next season began with Pastor Tim immediately going to the FBI and Stan finds out and the whole season is the Jennings under complete surveillance without their knowledge while Paige serves as the double-agent.

That, or, :siren: unpopular opinion :siren: despite all of Pastor Tim's posturings, he realizes sometimes Paige is still a teenager and will do teenager things and will chock it up as something she said when she was upset and does not make anything of it, except maybe telling Phil and Liz.

I might have to rewatch the episode where they reveal the truth to Paige, but I don't think they ever said they were spies. I think it's fairly specific that Paige tells Pastor Tim that her parents, "...aren't American; they're Russians," but not specifically Soviet Spies.

They said they work for their country, getting information no one else could get. Paige used the word "spies" in that same conversation to clarify what they were talking about.

You had one job Paige, one job :argh:

Really interested to see where it goes from here. Things aren't looking great for Elizabeth and Phillip next season, with her even more radicalised and him hating his job, and himself, more and more. The pastor will presumably hold back from spilling the beans, but wll it be due to a desire to keep Paige's confidence or is there any chance he has communist sympathies. I'm positive he's not a spy that would be terrible writing.

Stan getting shut down by the big boss about Nina was also pretty great.

The *complete* lack of Martha in this episode really made me wonder if the last scene was going to be a 'flashback' to Phil killing her silently after revealing his ~true face~ to her, and that'd be why he was being even more morose than usual.

Interesting article: http://www.refinery29.com/2015/04/85945/annet-mahendru-the-americans-season-3-finale#slide

Was that what it was really like for KGB operatives in the U.S.?

As for Paige, she was doing the right thing, but drat if saying things like "I'm having a really tough time. I'm hurting..." when she's comparatively had the best of it this season didn't grate a little. Go hug your dad! That or go pick up your brother from Stan's and tell the Government agent about the spies rather than the youth pastor.

Don't lose your head over it.
Why is there even any doubt about whether Martha is still alive? Philip killed the goon FBI IT guy to make it look like he is the one that planted the bug. Then in a later scene, Elizabeth tells Philip that he needs to go tell Martha so she does not confess due to a guilty conscience when she hears about the IT guy's death from someone else.

He's making a "okay now we've got a plot, let's go" comment. I won't begrudge him, there's a lot of shows on television where not a lot happens because it's all about the characters. You can basically sum up this season as "Martha finds out. Paige finds out. Stan tries to free Nina." - that sounds like an episode synopsis but it's the whole season.
