Man, all this Fenric talk is reminding me of how the McCoy era was my first foray into Classic Who. Remembrance Of The Daleks? Pretty danged great, has aged wonderfully. Then I watched Dragonfire to see where this Ace lady had come from, and... wow that was weird. Then I watched The Happiness Patrol. Look, maybe in 1988 the people who were left watching Doctor Who could accept a homicidal candy robot, but when it's your third old serial ever you are like "what in the hell is this". I need to give it a re-appraisal, badly.

DoctorWhat posted:Fenric isn't a dud in any case. But it's better on a rewatch, with full attention and a critical eye and behind-the-scenes knowledge. If you need behind the scenes knowledge to enjoy something, someone hosed up somewhere. MrL_JaKiri posted:There's basically one bad scene in Fenric, some people think that's enough to ruin it apparently because the only other criticism is "it's a vampire story, in the day time " which is the bad scene you mention? also there is more to criticize than just the daytime setting. the pacing is sloppy, theres too many unecessary characters, plot elements out of nowhere (Ace and the russian commander, the "we fight together now, comrade" angle that pops in at the end, the doctor suddenly has to set up a chess game to defeat fenric), terrible music. I could probably do a better analysis of it, but... effort. DoctorWhat posted:Happiness Patrol owns, it's Doctor Who being furiously anti-Thatcher, which is the mode it should almost always be in, frankly. it would be a bit harsh if capaldi ran around in season 9 bitching about a dead, democratically elected politician, but funny.

I may have. But it still doesn't really work, the soldiers ARE adversaries until it's revealed that the british commanders have lost it and summoned Fenric, where upon the british soldiers realize that, poo poo, the russians aren't the real enemy here.

Between location lighting and overtime, half an episode's worth of night shooting would probably have knackered their budget for the entire year. This is firmly in the tradition of "we in no way have the funds to realise our ideas 'properly', but gently caress it, let's do it anyway!" There's no point watching classic Who if you can't go "aha, now this slightly dodgy contrivance is meant to represent XYZ, they don't have the time/money to do it, but I can appreciate the effort and meet them halfway" sometimes.

My memory is that Fenric was very good, Survival was also very good but that one mistake of doing the weird fur costumes really hurts it, Battlefield lets McCoy chew on the scenery a bit too much and the Merlin stuff is too confusing, and Ghost Light is good but you'd have to watch it three times to really understand what's going on without having Wikipedia at your side. Season 26 is often too ambitious for the resources and time that they had, which, of all the sins to commit, is a pretty good one. Does anyone here not have the Wikipedia list of Doctor Who serials open in a tab about half the time?

Apparently, the mindset was, "we built this set, we got to make sure everyone sees it." I don't know if it came from a fear that if they didn't light everything, the BBC would wonder why the needed that big of a budget if everything was in the dark anyway, or if it was the lighting union raising a stink. I think James Cameron had similar problems when trying to film Aliens with a British crew, and them telling him that they knew how to light the drat thing. Other great things about The Curse of Fenric: the theme of losing faith (the priest and later Ace) and the importance of logic to the plot (the enigma machine, the chess problem). It's a bit of a mess on a story level (but no less so than, I'd argue, your average RTD story) but it absolutely nails the emotional beats and thematic elements.

DoctorWhat posted:Ghost Light What's great about ghost light is that while there is a bunch of cut material, almost all of the important information is still in the story, hidden in offhand remarks and comments by the doctor, light, ace and nimrod. It's definitely dripping with metaphor though. Everything in ghost light, right down to the setting, is about evolution vs intelligent design. I'd go into detail but I feel like I would be up for ages writing page after page about it. It's such a dense script it really should have been a four parter, or even longer.

Dude, Ghost Light is usually cited as one of the 80s stories with good, restrained lighting. There's a load of scenes in the basement where it's dark enough to start throwing up buckets and buckets of grain on the videotape. They couldn't have made it much darker without making it completely unwatchable. MikeJF posted:Does the cut material from Fenric and Ghost Light still exist in any form? Fenric has an extended DVD release with the original TX version and an extended movie-length cut with most of the cut material restored. For Ghost Light the cut material only exists with a burned-in timecode on the screen, so it's provided as an extended DVD extra. (Buy the DVDs! They're great value! As [whatever Komrade Hitlerstalin calls himself these days] said once, they don't just throw in the kitchen sink, they also throw in the rusty old spare drainpipe they found lying in an old closet somewhere!)
