Couldn't find an archived version but yeah, it seems like a bit of a blind spot for him. Yeah, it was Bagley's cartoon for July 31, 2009 (still available on the AAEC site), and goons were generally not wild about it then either.

Vienna Circlejerk posted:No, it was actually pretty cringeworthy: Oh yeah, it was cringeworthy all right, but what I meant was in context it's not quite so embarrassing. From what I read, it was pretty much a PR op where Quayle was handed a bunch of cue cards with words on them and was instructed to give them out to kids in the spelling bee and correct them if they were wrong. It turned out he was given a card with "potatoe" written on it so rather than think things through he just did what he was told and corrected the kid who spelled it (correctly). Though apparently he didn't notice anything was wrong until one of the reporters at the press conference after asked him "How do you spell potato?" and the press corps burst into laughter. ...which is pretty drat depressing when you think about it--can you imagine the Washington press corps openly mocking a politician for their stupidity nowadays? Anyway, I think some of the other stuff Quayle said was far more embarrassing. People mock Bush II's idiotic sayings, but he was an amateur at that compared to Quayle.

Comparing any "bad thing" to literal rape is as lazy and dumb as comparing bad things to hitlers - even before the fact it can be insensitive as all poo poo. If it helps, here's a rape metaphor used recently in Australia that was just as dumb but on a subject most D&D fans will disagree with. See how poo poo it is?

chairface posted:Also of note, the thing with being murdered is you were going to die eventually anyway. I'm not remotely arguing it's not wrong to kill someone here, but death was going to be a thing that happened to them at some point, from one cause or another. That they would eventually die was guaranteed, and it is still wrong to cause that death prematurely/extrajudicially/etc, but not everyone necessarily gets raped. Nonconsensual sex is not a guaranteed event that will occur in one's life, as opposed to death, which is in fact guaranteed and something one would have to deal with eventually whether as a result of being a victim of a crime or not.

Mister Beeg posted:Looking at editorial cartoons from when Bush Sr. was president, they loved to tease that Quayle was a moron, or at least really naive. One cartoonist always depicted Quayle as children's crayon scribble. Borgman. Quayle was drawn as a stickman, often carrying a sloppy-looking book labeled "COMIX." I've heard Oliphant originally drew him as a man without a face, but since none of his cartoons from the '88 election are posted online, I cannot verify. I do know that by the time he was Vice President, Oliphant was drawing him as a child, no older than 5. Man, remember when popular cartoonists could actually draw? That phenomenon couldn't survive the twin forces of XKCD and Ted Rall, apparently. Hey, speaking of cartoonists who completely suck at drawing! Obvious response: Why would anyone steal a Gary McCoy comic? They look like rear end. WarpedNaba posted:So wait, wasn't Dubya rumoured to be illiterate? Like 'My favorite book in university was the very hungry caterpillar' illiterate? The rumor was that he had dyslexia. The quote associated with it was: George W. Bush posted:That woman who knew I had dyslexia? I never interviewed her. He also said, "Sometimes, when I lie awake at night, I think of 'Hop on Pop.'" Personally I don't think he was inherently stupid or that he had an innate learning disability, but I do suspect he has literal brain-damage from decades of drug and alcohol abuse. Now Scott Walker–that guy either has some kind of birth defect, or was dropped on a hard surface as an infant. Deep Hurting fucked around with this message at 11:18 on Apr 25, 2015 |
