With SIgh especially, the dingier production is the reason I like Hail Horror Hail so much more than Imaginary Sonicscape. I think it fits the new record very well and I didn't even notice it on first listen which to me is a positive.

I like metal that sounds like it was recorded in a basement or garage, the natural habitats of metal bands. Recordings that sound like a band playing in a room are the best. Speaking of which, Legionnaire just put out a new demo. Old-timey heavy metal similar to Brocas Helm and Liege Lord. https://legionnairemetal.bandcamp.com/

yoober posted:Dude I talked to at a show last week said the same thing but I'm pretty sure I see more Detroit tour dates pop up on my RSS than anything on this side of the state. The dude said Detroit audiences were bad hipsters and bands didn't like playing there anymore I think? I can't say one way or the other, never really been out that way. Everything I see these days is Grand Rapids. I think the big problem is that Harpo's has fallen apart and that was the big place to play for the longest time. It had such a notorious reputation that Napalm Death wouldn't play there. Unfortunately management had a way of screwing the bands and now nothing but washed up Nu-Metal acts and rappers nobody wants to see anymore play there. MotorCityRock.com posted:My favorite memory (of Harpos was) John the stage manager putting a Walther PPK-S in my waist band, telling me that I needed a gun to go across the street to the drug store. I felt like James Bond.

I liked their music but wasn't super familiar with them. Wasn't really expecting it to be that great but they were one of the few bands I've seen that just felt like a freight train live, War Master being another.

david crosby posted:Before it got released, you could only listen to the last song on band camp. I did that approx. 20 times, and I thought it was gonna be the top track in the album, becuz it rules pretty hard. It is so insane that the first songs are even better, somehow. It's really good. Stronger than the demo, and I like how it builds in intensity over the run time. If you like this you might be interested in the new Genocide Shrines album. Haven't heard all of it yet, but from the preview tracks it seems like it will be good poo poo: https://vaultofdriedbones.bandcamp.com/album/manipura-imperial-deathevokovil-scriptures-of-reversed-puraana-dharmurder

Gotta love the totally out-there description on their bandcamp page (their signature even includes a swastika).

I'm listening to Sonne Adam's "Transformation" right now and God why didn't anyone tell me about this in 2011? I haven't heard a death metal album with this many awesome riffs in ages.

if you need death metal just listen to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYE95gqqPlg If it had actually been released in 1986 instead of after the band broke up, then maybe they wouldn't have had to suffer the indignity of being resurrected 10 years later by Phil Anselmo for his own entertainment.

Yeah, Sonne Adam dropped off in quality significantly after Transformation and Necros Christos have continued to be solid. Another band I really love, kinda in the same vein, is Grave Miasma. Great blackened death metal on the same small record label as Necros Christos. Their whole first album Odori Sepulcrorum is excellent. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gt41WtqozAM

oh by the way that Exodus and Testament show was incredible. amazing sets.. Toxic Waltzed myself to exhaustion. All the early stuff from Testament, I lost my poo poo when they played Alone In The Dark, one of my favorites that I didn't think I'd ever get to hear live. 10/10 would bash myself up in that pit again

For the curious, I have assembled a Spotify playlist of all the bands I could find appearing at Maryland Deathfest 2015. There are a quite a few duds but I didn't delete them off the playlist because someone else may really enjoy Gnaw Their Tongues. https://open.spotify.com/user/autojive/playlist/0KSCmZw8DYuIiYdh4wDohS 75 and a half hours of metal. \m/,

My favorite little hardcore/metal venue is closing Got to see a bunch of good shows there over the last ten-plus years, this is kinda lovely. Only saving grace is that the final show is going to be an incredibly hardcore show with a wrestling theme, half off dressed as your favorite wrestler. Last one standing is forever the champion of the club. People are gonna fuckin' die
