Doctors Without Borders is sending rescue teams and supplies to Nepal. http://www.msf.org/article/nepal-msf-sending-medical-and-non-medical-teams-assist-victims-nepal-earthquake This org has a good reputation and does legit work around the world, with 80% of donations going directly toward humanitarian activities, and 20% to administration. And actually this thread reminded me to update my monthly donation since my credit card number changed last week.

im very sad that it wasnt a larger quake, because all humans need to die. while id prefer the us went first, every step toward human extinction is still wonderful.

I heard on the NPR that there've been several small aftershocks. Do you think the guys trapped on Everest felt them? Trapped in their little tents, calculating just how long they can live on what food they have, over and over again?

Looks like the Everest count is up to 17. A lot of tweets about the first helicopter now going to rescue the 60+ injured people at base camp.

I hope people trapped on the mountain are okay. On a day when a lot of innocent people died it seems ghoulish to cheerlead for more.

Aside from a few sociopaths, nobody's cheering for more deaths. edit: Not seriously, anyway. I hope.

Minrad posted:it's more an issue of surviving hypothermia/dehydration OK, so assuming that not everyone who survived the quake will actually get off the mountain alive, why don't we start a second guessing game? How long will the last person to die on Everest this year live after the quake?

i unironically wish everest gets quaked so hard it falls over and takes k2 and all the climbers with it E: i was making fun of people who think walking up that hill is anything close to accomplishment especially cause 99% of people take the chairlift and walk up that ramp

I think I'd stick with my guess of "3 survive earthquake, die escaping mountain," but who the gently caress knows with the possibility for some aftershocks loving things up further. at the very least, we have natural selection at work. only the True Mountaineers and Sherpas will escape the newer, more rugged, less tourist friendly Everest featuring no wheelchair access through the icefall

Bip Roberts posted:What's the magic number so we can pop some Champagne and celebrate a Record Season? quote:In the entire season, twelve people died trying to reach the summit, making this the deadliest day and the deadliest year on Mount Everest until the sixteen fatalities of the 2014 Mount Everest avalanche. The 1996 disaster gained wide publicity and raised questions about the commercialization of Everest. So, deadliest day, deadliest season is still up in the air. Almost there!
