When you fall, get right back up again.
She did? Seriously? I’ll talk to her about it after I put the kids to bed, hold on. Alright, story time! Last time, Delta and Cass failed to stop CIEL_NOSURGE and sunk into the Flask Sea. Now, we move somewhere else.

???: Hello?

To a young lady we briefly saw inside Sarly’s mind, speaking to… someone.

Oh no, maybe you can’t…
That’s odd, all the wiring is right, and the power’s fine. Hm…
Um… Are you there?

Feinne’s Notes:
All of Earthes’ dialog comes in the form of choice boxes, I won’t show them every time. Also for now he’s just called the Avatar by the game, though this will change later.

Someone rather far away, yet very close.

Oh! You are there!
Say something else!
I’m right here.
Oh wow, you really are there!
That’s a relief… I thought I’d really messed up something for a minute there.
It’s nice to meet you. My name is Ionasal kkll Preciel.
I built you myself. Can you move? Can you see?
Perfectly.
Good! That’s a relief.
You’re probably wondering why I built you, huh? The truth is I need your help with something.
I want to get out of here. I NEED to get out of here. There’s something I have to do.
So...will you help me? Please?
I don’t understand, but I’ll help.
Really? Oh, that’s wonderful! I know we can do it!
I’ll change the camera mode so it’s easier for you to move around! Hold on a sec!

It seemed she was talking to a robot, which isn’t weird at all shut up.

He he. How’s that? A lot better, right? I worked pretty hard on you.
About getting out of here, though… I don’t actually have any ideas.
S-Sorry, I’ve just been here by myself for so long, there’s a lot I don’t know…
But there’s somebody named Nelico nearby who runs a store.
I was thinking I would start by asking her about all this. Would you mind coming with me?
Her store isn’t that far away.
Alright, let’s get going.

Robots are pretty great. Anyway, the world around them was quite strange.

Over there is the World Wall. It’s pretty much the place where this world ends.
If there’s any way to escape, it would probably be over there, but…
We should try asking Nelico first.

So they headed to speak to Ion’s ‘friend’ Nelico.

Huh?

A person just as strange as the world around them.

Oh ho, if it isn’t the Lighthouse Keeper. Your skin’s looking very nice, as usual.
He he. Really?
Yes! But you’re still no match for me.
Oh… I see…
Nelico calls me the “Lighthouse Keeper.” I have no idea why, though…
So, what brings you here toda—huh? What’s this big pile of junk?
U-Um… That’s “you”…
Me?
Hey, what’re you saying? I’m not a hunk of old metal. Has living alone finally driven you crazy?
N-No! What I meant was you shouldn’t call him “junk.” He’s an avatar I built.
Although I guess you could sort of say he’s a robot…no, that doesn’t make any sense either…
Oh, so he’s like some sort of mechanical helper?
Yes! That’s right!
Huh, that seems handy… Think you could make me one too?
Um, that’s… I think that would be difficult, for many reasons.
Huh. So what’re you having him do? Cook? Clean? Maybe…something else…? Heh heh heh.
N-Nelico! What are you suggesting?!
Ooooooooh nothing.

She was exactly as helpful as you’d expect someone wearing bunny ears to be.

I don’t know how to get out though, so I thought I’d ask you.
What do you mean, get out of here?
I mean this world.
Huh. That’s a weird thing to say. I don’t get it.
I finally remembered who I am, and what I need to do.
Remembered…? What are you talking about?
You’ve always lived here, and you always will. In peace. Isn’t that what you want?
No, it’s not. That’s wrong. I…I…
More importantly, I got a new vending machine.
Oh…?
That’s right! Want to give it a spin?
The prizes are popular characters from “Cloudy Planet Nelitoarco”! The ultra rare prize is Empress Nelico.
“Cloudy Planet Nelitoarco”… What’s that?

Indeed, she seemed to be trying to change the subject from escape.

What…? The only people here are you and me.
Oh, right.
Don’t act like you didn’t know that…
Anyway, just give it a spin, okay?
…Okay, but just once.
I…I think it’s broken.
What? Let me see.
Hm. It looks like one of the parts is damaged. I really don’t like defective things…
Hey, Keeper, sorry to ask, but do you think you could get me the parts to fix this thing?
What? But…I…
Please, I’m begging you. I can’t leave my shop…
Why? There’s no one else here…
Just what I expected from the Keeper! Thank you! Please find the “Legendary Black Rotor-Dial” in Kemokemo!
I-I didn’t even say I’d do it!
Don’t worry. I’ll take care of the repairs myself!
Haaaa… Okay, fine. The Legendary Black Rotor-Dial, right? I’ll go find it.
I’m counting on you!

They found some odd machines in Kemokemo which seemed to fit the bill.

Was she talking about these? There’s so many, though. I don’t know which one to bring back…
That one on the right is shining! It’s that one!
Really?! You know everything…
System Message: Obtained “Legendry Black Rotor-Dial”!

They returned to Nelico, who seemed a bit surprised.

Nelico?
Oh, Keeper. That was quick.
Well, Kemokemo is just right over there…
Yes, I suppose so.
I brought the “Legendary Black Rotor-Dial”. This is it, right?
Oh, yes! I can repair the machine with this. Everything from “Cloudy Planet Nelitoarco” is as good as yours!
Um, Nelico, do you know how I could get out of here?
You’re still going on about that? You should just be happy you have a place to live here.
I can’t do that…
…Hmm.
Well, it doesn’t matter. I don’t have any idea how to wake you up anyway. Sorry.
That’s okay, you don’t need to apologize. I was just hoping you might know something…

Ion decided to take matters into her own hands.

I’ll come back again some time.
Keeper! Wait!
Huh?
I just fixed this, why not give it a spin?
U-Um, maybe next time…
…Oh, you know, things have gotten pretty dangerous lately. Watch yourself out there, okay?
What? Really?
Yes, really.

Feinne’s Notes:
Nelico just warned us that now there are enemies in Kemokemo. Funny how that happens now.

Though things had gotten a bit unsafe.

I can feel the hostility.
Yeah, I can too.
Things are getting strange out here… We should be careful.

Still, with her new friend’s help she made it safely to the wall.

Maybe we can find a door by hitting it… Maybe not.
What about breaking it?
Wait, break it?
Hm… Maybe it’s not actually that strong after all.
It feels more like stone than metal.
Not that stone is easy to break or anything, and we don’t know how thick it is either…
…Oh, how about an explosive?
I could try making a bomb…
That sounds great!
I know right!? I’m totally on the ball today!
…Although, I’ve never actually made a bomb before.
If I mess up, we might both end up in a different place, if you know what I mean…
A-Anyway, we can probably find the stuff to make a bomb in Kemokemo, so let’s head back home.
Um< I think we’ll need… “Formium Material”, “Luxury Balm”, and a “TC21 58-Electrode Tube”.
Let’s start looking

Feinne’s Notes:
Those three items are gatherable around Kemokemo, at which point we need to return to Ion’s house.

After finding the supplies, they returned to Ion’s ruined foundation of a home.

Thanks for helping. I think we’ve got everything!
I’ll get started on the bomb, but it might take a little while.
Um… The red wire goes here, the blue wire goes there…
It’s done!
Take a look! It’s for destroying the World Wall, so I’m calling it the “Nitro World Breaker.”
I don’t know if this has enough power to break the World Wall, but…we don’t know until we try. Let’s—
I’m coming in.
Nelico?
You can’t break the World Wall with a bomb like that, Keeper.
Huh…?
Do you understand exactly what this world is?
I don’t know exactly, but… I get the feeling it’s inside of me somewhere.
Hm… You’re pretty sharp. I suppose you wouldn’t try to leave if you weren’t, though.

Nelico decided to be a bit more direct about trying to stop Ion.

You were put here for the greater good of the rest of the world.
If you leave, then you’ll be destroying the balance out there.
That’s why you shouldn’t—no, you CAN’T leave.
As the Lighthouse Keeper.
…I don’t understand what you’re saying, Nelico.
The reason I have to leave is because the world needs me. I can’t believe that’s going to destroy the balance.
…So there’s no chance you’re going to listen to me?
None at all!
Even after everything I’ve done to try and convince you otherwise?
No!
What if I cry and beg you?
Please don’t cry!
I could even do you a…favor.
A favor…?
Yes.
Watch closely…
W-Wait, Nelico, what are you doing?!
…Well, regardless there’s no way you can leave. The world doesn’t want it.
Just watch your back, Keeper. If you try and leave, the world will turn against you.
I’ll be fine. I was alone for a long time, but now I’ve finally got someone to protect me.

Ion ran into something surprising at the World Wall.

A sharl was waiting for her there.

Sharl: Oh, hello Ms. Keeper.
Um, hello.
Sharl: Nice weather we’re having…
Huh? Um, yes, you’re right…
Sharl:
…Um, hello?
Sharl: It looks like you’ve manage to regain your sense of self.
My what…?
Sharl: It was a lot of work, fixing your heart. It took a very long time.
You did that…?
Sharl: No, it took many Sharl, working together.
I…I see.
Sharl: Anyway, it’s almost time. You’ll be awakening soon.
Awakening…? Do you know how I can get out of here?

It seemed that Sarly was responsible for Ion’s opportunity to escape.

Wait… Sarly?!
Sharl: Did you know there’s a crack in the wall over there?
Huh? You mean this? …You’re right, there is a tiny crack.
Sharl: Yes, there! You should give it a good thwack!
O-Okay. I guess I can use my Nitro World Breaker.
Sharl: Excellent! Wait, what’s a “Nitro World Breaker”?
It’s a bomb.
Sharl: Ah, yes, of course.
Wait, a bomb?!
I’ll just toss it over there…
Sharl: W-Wait! That’s not a thwack! That’s a boom! A-Aaaaaaa!

It certainly had the desired effect, and I do have to appreciate overkill.

Hehe… That explosion was bigger than I thought it would be. Maybe I put a little too much gunpowder in it…
H-Hey, that Sharl isn’t here anymore… I wonder where she went?
I’m sure she ran away.
Y-You’re right! She was flying away, so I’m sure she’s fine!
Anyway, let’s go take a look.

Behind the wall was a vast open space.

And it seemed she’d been largely trapped by her own belief that the wall was solid.

So this is what the World Wall was made out of…

They came at last to the end of the world.

Do you think jumping down is the way out?
I think so.
Yeah, that might work.
It’s kind of scary… But I’ll be okay if you’re with me. Ready?
You should calm down and think this over, Keeper.
Nelico…
If you jump down that hole, bad things are gonna happen. All you’ll know is sorrow.
What’s so bad about this world? He’s here, I’m here. There’s no war. Nobody hates anybody.
Don’t you think it would be better to just stay here forever? It’s so peaceful.
It’s not that I don’t like it here, but there’s something I have to do, and I can’t do it here.
That’s why I have to go.

…Please, Keeper, don’t leave.
What…?
If you do, then I’ll be all alone.
Nobody will come to my store, and I won’t have any friends to invite to dinner. It’ll be just me…

Nelico continued to try to stop her from escaping.

What are you saying…?
Please, don’t do it. I don’t want to disappear. I want to stay here with you.
I know this is a small, lonely world, but it’s a lot more fun if we’re together.
Please Keeper, just think about it. For me…
I…
I’m so sorry. I appreciate everything you’ve done for me, but I really, really have to go.
I don’t want to leave you here all alone, but…I…
I see.
I thought that would be the most effective strategy, but apparently I underestimated you.
What…?
If you insist on leaving, then I must fulfill my primary duty. At any cost.
Lighthouse Keeper, I cannot allow you to proceed any further. I’m afraid I have to put you to sleep for a bit.
What…? Nelico!

In the end, it came to a fight.

Boss Battle: Nelico

Nelico could prove kind of rough if you didn’t synthesize extras of the Cathodes and RNAs during Delta and Cass’s chapter. The little slime dudes are actually the real threats, though, they get a lot of attacks on Hard and can really dish out some damage. Once you’ve finally got through them, just keep Nelico broken and it’s pretty straightforward. You can always go back to Kemokemo and gain a couple of levels if it’s really giving you grief.

Ion’s desire to escape proved too great for Nelico.

Oh Nelico… Why did you do this? Who are you…?
No use hiding it anymore, I suppose. Ow…
Are you okay…?
Of course I’m not. Rrgh…

I am an Astrocyte Modulation Virus.
A virus…?
Yes. I was created to keep you inside this world.
While you’re in this place, multitudes of Sharl continue to be created in reality, with you as the intermediary.
It’s…an effect of the synergy between myself and a program called CIEL_NOSURGE.
I’ve been creating Sharl? Wh-What does that mean?
The world needs Sharl to save it—a whole lot of Sharl.
In order to keep creating Sharl, you have to sleep here.
Wait…so do you mean the real me is asleep in another world?
Exactly.
Why didn’t I realize this before…?

Viruses… Now that takes me back.

That’s probably why you thought you were part of this world.
That meant I didn’t have to try and prevent you from leaving. Until now…
I never thought it would turn out like this, though.
Your partner here turned out to be quite a bit of trouble.
…If I jump down there, will I go back to the real world? … I’ll awaken, I guess?
You really think I’m going to answer that?
Yes, I do, because I don’t think you’re actually a bad person.
Heh. Well, you’re right. I’m not even a “person” at all.
Yes, if you jump, you’ll wake up.
Then it’s okay if I leave…?
If crying, begging, and fighting won’t stop you, there’s nothing I can do. I’m done.
But I promise that when you do wake up, you’ll regret it.
Your awakening will destroy the world itself. Nobody wants you to do that.
…Well, even so, I have to. There’s someone I have to stop.
Huh. Then have a good life, Lighthouse Keeper. We didn’t spend much time together, but it was entertaining.
We will likely never meet again. Enjoy regretting this decision for the rest of your life.
Thank you for everything. I…I’m sorry.
Goodbye.
Adieu.

And with that she jumped. As for what happened next, that will have to wait for the next time I’m afraid.

Next Time, Ar Nosurge: Sharanohiar

I think it might actually be possible to get those in an English copy of the game, albeit through opening a World Linked save made in the Japanese version of the game that has gotten up to just before this point.

Of course I have no idea if that actually works, but I know you can open Japanese save files in the English version and get some of the World Link required stuff so I don't see why it wouldn't.

Yes, that probably would actually work, but it requires messing around with the save files in unintended ways as they are not cross-region compatible by themselves. As far as I can tell all the actual content is still there, just the way to access it has been removed.

Hey, Feinne, can you do something like:

Occupied / I'm here

so we can see the options you don't pick? (And yell at you when you pick the wrong one, like this time?) Earthes is kind of like DS2's protagonist, in that a majority of his personality is in the options that are available. He's got a sense of humor! Like here, when his first dialogue option is a choice between "Reply straightforwardly" and "Troll her," or the dials, where the options are "Honestly reply that you have no idea" or "Make poo poo up." He's pretty great. Ion is also great, but the why comes later; Delta and Casty are fun, but I really like the second set of protagonists.

Also notable: there's an achievement in the first conversation for refusing the "But thou must" in "Will you help?" often enough. It's ridiculously easy to miss.

Yeah I can do that for the future. I was actually trying to decide how to handle the choices and that's a decent way to do it.

I'm going to try and get a good balance between picking funny options and choices that really reinforce what's special about Ion's story, namely that it's really hers. She pretty much drives her own story and we just help her out, which is what I really hope we see more of in future games in the series.

Good game!
Most dialogue options vary between being nice and a dick to Ion, some are pretty amusing. Also the remains of the house are kind of sad, Ions house looks actually pretty nice in Ciel but it crumbles more and more as she regains her memories.

Also the plan to keeping someone occupied with Gacha forever is japanese as gently caress. Anyways, Ion is great, and so is Nelico.

It will eventually make sense how there can be an Earthes in the real world as well but the game will leave it a bit of a convenient mystery for the moment. The nice thing is we're about to get like ten times more of an idea of what the gently caress is going on in this game than we did in all of Delta and Cass' section over the course of a couple of updates. We'll also go Dive with Ion, in an update or two, because I don't think this is the authentic Ar Nosurg experience if I don't just jump right into Ion 1.

Update whenever I can get it together, there's videos to process and such though.

So that lady was called "Nelico", which is like "Tonelico" without the first two letters. And in "Cloudy Planet Nelitoarco", "Nelitoarco" is an anagram of "Ar Tonelico".

I don't understand what this is supposed to mean. It seems to just be a joke. It doesn't seem to mean anything. But it must mean something.

It's the very first link on the summary page. But yeah, calling the full thing a 'summary' is pretty generous.

I think Earthes dialogue should be a constant, never-ending series of trolls. He should be a motherfucking train with just one motherfucking stop: Trollsville, population Ion. In fact go back and show off all the trolling dialogue.

If the troll answers elicit funny responses go full ham on them, Ion looks like a decent straight woman to bounce some hilarity off.
In the previous game, could you go full Ciel Trollsurge?

Admiral H. Curtiss posted:

Do note that if you don't World Link, so for all English playthroughs of the game, Earthes is actually canonically not the Ciel noSurge player. It's kinda weird that way.

So canonically Earthes is a robot remotely controlled by an extra-universal entity, namely the Ar player. If the player didn't play Ciel, then obviously Earthes can't be the Ciel player.
The logic is quite straightforward once you stop and think about it, even if it is somewhat non-standard.

I've got a game script so I can check out some of them post facto.

Anyway getting to work on videos now, hoping to update again today.

It's a good thing that most of those rear end in a top hat scientists were compressed into a black hole for their crimes, yet somehow Zill survived and is making up for their absence in spades.

Also to the people asking about Ciel, remember that it was way more of a "life-sim" game where you had to constantly pay attention to Ion by logging in daily. Also if you pretty much devoted your entire lifetime to the game you had the option to have marriage ceremony with Ion :japan: . The story also was spoonfed chapter by chapter of the course of like what, 15 months? There probably were quite a few players who were emotionally invested into Ion and some other characters over all that time. It's an interesting concept, but I doubt it would ever work outside japan.

I can see why it didn't get brought over.

Basically you had your daily interaction where you get more sharl that rebuild Ions memory over time, draw items from Gachas for your house etc or to build poo poo, once a memory rebuild was complete you could watch it unfold like a visual novel.

Yeah Nay's life sucks in ways that will become increasingly obvious as we learn more about her circumstances.

We've got a story update ideally today but maybe tomorrow given one of the videos is a big awkward dump of content I need to sift through. Then we'll have Ion 1, because it totally makes sense that we should try and get better song magic and that's the logical thing to do now, right?

I can think of one context it might work in: WoW.

What do you think Ion would be like as a follower? Aside from a non-removable, extra-strength version of the mechanical-buddy trait.

Actually, I have a question... we have control of Class::CIEL_N_PROTECTA now, right? Do we ever remember that? Summon a Child of Light equivalent to soften up a boss? Use our robot army to combat the Sharl? Anyone? Anyone? ...Bueller?
Anyway, it's kinda refreshing to see Ion freeing herself. It's not quite a subversion of the Reyvateil in distress (and no one will be as hardcore as Cocona) but it's something.

CIEL_N_PROTECTA pretty much doesn't come up again. Which sort of makes sense because the Soreil doesn't really have very impressive Guardians compared to poo poo like the Child of Light. As she noted, those things Zill had with her effectively WERE the Soreil's equivalent of Kanade. And they sucked, then got shut down.

Like it would have been cool if they'd given us a new Song Magic to reflect it but I'm pretty sure it's also a lot more work to do than just using a Hymmn:: song and blowing things to hell.

No wonder she was trying to keep her locked in the world in Gachas.
