You can never tell with these articles, no doubt translated, and also based on some interview with... you know, a child... but yeah. For all I know she's from some high-alpine village in India and is actually highly acclimated and has been charging around on the tops of mountains in the Himalaya since she was an infant. But even then, it's a bit nuts. And the impression from the article is that she's just some poor villager who got a "chance of a lifetime" and can't possibly have understood (or consented to) the danger.

Kathmandu-Lhasa flight (get the left window seat!) The view the whole flight is amazing. Taken two years ago tomorrow, back when the big Everest news was about the guides getting into a fight with Sherpas. Innocent times those were.

If you want the original, I have that too. Here's some more from the flight. In order from west to east out of Kathmandu. The Mansiri Himal. The peak in the middle of the pic is two, actually. Manaslu, 8th highest in the world, is mostly obscured by Ngadi Chuli, 20th. The bigger, snowier peak is Himalchuli, which is 18th. Far right, Gyachung Kang, the 15th highest in the world. To its left, Cho Oyu, 6th-highest. I never researched what is on the far left. Everest on the left, Makalu on the right. And then the plane took a left at Everest & Makalu and headed into Tibet. The clouds obscured the spine of mountains, unfortunately, but it's really obvious that Tibet has begun.

It was a complete crap shoot. Some days the clouds are too much. We got lucky. There were a good 10 minutes during which I could see Everest. At one point I forced myself to put down the camera and just soak in the view, and mumble, "gently caress me, that's Everest." I also took a cruddy 10-second video of it. Those of you looking to donate to something with a mountaineering link should check out The Himalayan Trust. It was founded by Sir Edmund Hillary and they've been doing poo poo like building schools in Nepal for decades. They have an earthquake appeal but they also do good poo poo on a day-to-day basis as well.

I'm actually going to save up some money and give in like 2 months, when things have shaken out and it's obvious who's actually there for the long haul in terms of emergency relief. It'll almost definitely be Doctors without Borders, but there's a lot of politics in who Nepal is accepting help from so it's better to hold off. The issue right now isn't cash flow but getting things to places, which is very hard.

Linking Fox, which is gross. Apparently China has suspended climbing for the rest of the season from Tibet, but despite climbers claims otherwise, Nepal has yet to officially close the mountain for climbing. I'm sure that's only a matter of time though.
