lol if you're complaining about availability of transportation in Vegas.

The fact that it has a monorail and at least some buses that run 24 hours a day puts it light years ahead of most American cities.

My cousins, aunt and uncle confirmed to visit Vegas from Monday 6/22 and leave Friday 6/26. I'm a bit torn though. Jay, if you had to chose between Savile Row, Omnia and Absynthe which two would you chose? One option is I can do XS on Monday and Absyinthe on Wednesday with Savile Row on Thursday which is fine but Omnia is new and looks amazing. They've never been anywhere like it in their lives, only seen it in movies.

Absinthe is the best show in Vegas. XS on Monday is one of my favorite parties. Omnia Thursdays is just the patio. You could do Omnia on Tuesday though.

Mandalay, I think Mirage, Golden Nugget, maybe Flamingo...Monte Carlo does for sure. I'd assume basically most MGM Mirage properties at this point.

Golden Nugget has a water slide that runs through the shark tank but no lazy river. Nothing downtown does.

e: the slide is really cool but probably not something you want to take a beer on. lazy river with a beer sounds really good right now though.

Flamingo does not, it does have a fun little water slide however. Neither does Mirage, or Golden Nugget as noted above.

Mandalay and MGM of course as does Hard Rock Hotel. I spent some time specifically researching lazy rivers for my Vegas trip last year and MGM is the best one by far, with Mandalay bay second. There's a number of off-strip resorts that also have lazy rivers, though, I'm sure.

Oh man is it good. Tip: buy a beer outside instead of buying it at the pool. They'll make you put it in a plastic cup when you go into the pool but otherwise they don't care. Drinks at pools are insane, like $18 for a cocktail. That was my experience at MGM, anyway.

Ok, question for anyone whose seen some of the Las Vegas shows. I'll be passing through in September and have time to see a single Cirque du Soleil show (don't care about comedy/concerts, atleast none playing when I'm there). Besides price differences (not an issue really) I can't really make up my mind, so any thoughts on any of your favorites? So far I'm heavily leaning towards Le Reve (I know not technically Cirque but the same shtick) as apparently its superior to the much older O and with a similar focus on water.

Taking my girlfriend to Vegas this weekend for her 30th birthday (Saturday thru Wednesday) -- can't wait! It's my 5th or 6th time and her first. If it was just me and my buddies, I'd be at the Sportsbook and Craps tables 24/7 (god I wish it was NFL season). Since she's not a huge gambler, I've lined up some more touristy/fun things to do (which I'm looking forward to as well). This includes:

*Beatles - LOVE Cirque show on Sunday
*Mandalay Bay shark reef on Monday, as well as pinball museum
*Neon Graveyard and maybe Mob Museum on Tuesday. I love the history of LV, and I absolutely love Fremont/downtown, so we're staying at Four Queens on the cheap (NOT planning on spending much time there!).

I splurged a bit for an Escalade rental and a tour of the strip when we arrive at the airport -- flowers, champagne, chauffeur w/ goofy "happy birthday" sign etc. I'll probably never do this again, but hey, we skip the cab line and get to feel like ballers for a little bit!

My questions:

*According to the web, it looks like FQ guests can use the rooftop pool at Binion's. Is this definitely the case? I thought Binion's hotel shut down several years ago. I know I wouldn't mind some morning sun tanning time.
*Does the Plaza still run cheap poker tournaments/cash games? If I can get away for a couple hours, this or Binion's will probably be my go-to spot for cards.
*Anyone been to the Fireside Lounge @ Peppermill? We may spend Sunday night away from the casinos w/ some friends, and it looks cool.

I also hope to build on my collection of $1/$2.50 chips from various casinos. I was lucky enough to add Imperial Palace and Fitzgerald's to my collection before they got redone.

Was also sad to hear that the Dealertainers poo poo the Imperial Palace used to have before it switched to the LINQ is no more! That was some ridiculously fun blackjack. I remember enjoying the Neal Diamond impersonator who actually sang, instead of lip synching. Never change, LV.

I didn't have any issues once I figured out exactly where to move my hands to check my hole cards, etc. It seemed like there were a lot of regulars that were there because they could play all day for not a lot of cash. Most of them seemed pretty loose with wide hand ranges.

In my experience yes, they do close, I'm not sure if there are exceptions or if different resorts like to push it a bit longer than others. But I have a solid history of going to Vegas on NFL football weekends and never having a pool available to me.

So the wife and I are looking to plan a four day trip for middle august. We are 41 and 38 years old and boring as poo poo, so looking to mostly lounge at the pool during the day and then hit dinner and maybe a show at night. I assume because it's hot as balls in August, prices are relatively reasonable for the Mandarin so we are likely to stay there. With a nice spa and an uncrowded and mellow, but decent size, pool, this looks right up our alley. For dinner, we'd like to stay on the strip, so thinking Rose.Rabbit.Lie and Bartolotta, but am looking for other options as well. I don't think that we're up for something quite as pricey as Guy Savoy or Robuchon and we had a terrible meal at L'atelier eight years ago, but are willing to spend for quality. I'd also like to check out Absinthe and the wife wants to see the Michael Jackson Cirque show.

If anyone has any ideas, either for lodging, food or fun for a couple of olds, I'd love to hear them. Thanks!

Your plan is good. I'd also consider staying at Wynn or Encore if I were you. Bartolotta is a fantastic meal, I'm heading there tonight. Twist at Mandarin is great so if you're staying there go there. Absinthe is the best show in Vegas, MJ is the 2nd best. Rose.Rabbit is meh, if you go to the Cosmo to eat, eat at Scarpetta or Blue Ribbon.

Thanks! We stayed one night at the Wynn in 2007 after four nights at the Excalibur. Talk about night and day.

We'd be happy to stay there again, and it's cheaper than MO, but the pool situation and mid-strip location at MO makes me lean that way, even if it's a little more. As to Encore, I'm a bit scared off by reviews that say that you can hear the nightclub even on higher floors.

Thanks, again, for the advice. I'll probably scratch RRL off the list and keep looking for options.

If one had a 50 dollar credit to it, would it be worth going or a waste of a Las Vegas dining opportunity?

My ballin on a budget trip report:

*Staying downtown was amazingly fun, as always -- got upgraded at the Four Queens with $20 to their idea of a "suite" but it was on the top floor, quiet, and better than the rooms I've had before downtown, so A+. FQ guests were able to use the rooftop pool at Binion's across the street, which is something of a hidden gem -- there was NOBODY else using it the two days we did, and the view from the 25th floor rooftop was pretty awesome! If the "resort" style pools aren't your thing and you just want a place to get some sun, look out on the mountains, etc, this is the place.

For gambling, I didn't lay a single bet on the strip -- OK, not true, I played a roulette machine at the Mirage to get free drinks. But downtown, I played the $5 double deck blackjack at the El Cortez two nights in a row, won some money. $5 late night Pai Gow @ Binion's -- played a $12 poker tournament at the electronic tables at the Plaza on Tuesday, which was fun, but I didn't see the appeal. Glad I got to try them though. My biggest mistake was playing Mississippi Stud in a drunken stupor. You can win a lot of money quickly at that game, but holy poo poo can you lose it quickly too.

<-- love the EC

The Cirque LOVE show at the Mirage was really cool -- probably the most multi-media of the Cirque shows I've seen, and that's not a bad thing. Had a great time at the Revolution Lounge before the show and at the Mirage buffet earlier in the night. Next trip is Absinthe for sure, based on what everyone here is saying.

The Mandalay Bay shark reef is a great exhibit for any non-gamblers who find themselves in Vegas:

and the Neon Boneyard was REALLY cool. Our tour guide was enthusiastic as hell and provided really fun context and history of a lot of the old signs and old Vegas:

Only thing to do at the end of the trip was collect my winnings. I think I broke Vegas:

East Sahara between Rancho and Valley View is closer. Neither one is really walking distance, but both should be pretty well covered by bus routes. You're only looking at about three miles to the one on Sahara, so even a taxi wouldn't be too bad.

So I'm heading to Vegas on a business trip for around 4-5 nights this fall, being put up in the Cosmopolitan by work. I'll probably only have one or two evenings "free" outside of planned work activites, and aside from hitting up the Chipotle across the street (I'm an expat American, this will be my first time back in the States in over two years, don't judge), I guess I'll spend my time gaming. Now I didn't pick the Cosmopolitan, and if I were a tourist it'd be out of my price range anyway, so am I going to be screwed with high stakes at their casino? Would I be better off walking across to Planet Hollywood or the Bellagio?

My gaming would only be casual and probably restricted to craps & blackjack.

TheReverend
Jun 21, 2005

It's based on traffic. If it's a weekday during the day and not a lot of people then maybe you could play for about $15/hand/roll.
If it's the weekend it'll probably be at least $25.

Casino Royale is the the place on the strip for super cheap 3-5 dollar craps.

SLS had craps for 5 the last time I was there.

Stratosphere usually has pretty low minimums like 5 dollar blackjack but it's 6:5 and .....the stratosphere.

Downtown should always have pretty good gaming minimums.

For cheap gaming, go north!

Hooters is semi-walkable from the Cosmo and had cheap ($5 or $10, even on weekends) blackjack tables. The drink service is pretty good too. The ambiance is obviously lame, but that's not why you're there.

I don't think Casino Royale had any standard blackjack tables, only that stupid Blackjack Switch game.

Other than that, I don't think there's any other low limit place on, or reasonably close to, the south part of the strip.

I had a ton of fun gambling at the cosmo. On off-times, we had $5 and 10 minimum tables. On demand times, they went up to 15.

The dealers were great, the drinks flowed and it really was a pleasurable experience.

But keep in mind that we were sitting there with a table full of friends, a diet coke bottle full of whiskey from the Walgreen's across the way and we were all completely shithouse. The cosmo was totally fine with it, though. God, we must have thrown the dealer $100 in tips over the course of an hour, mainly because each time we did he'd deadpan "Oh joy. A happy meal for me" whenever we gave him $5.
