Stultus Maximus posted:Isn't IDWO pin a requirement for retention/advancement like the URL pins? Yes. I believe its 36 months for both EIDWS/IDWO. My command actually takes it very seriously and attrites (kicks out) people for non-attainment. edit: what I meant with my original comment is that some commands take the *qual* process (obtaining the pin) very seriously, and some treat it like a joke. Theoretically, somebody in Big Navy is tracking and will notice at 36 months. But, I have seen people at my current command FOS (on the O-side) or get the boot on the E side. And we're talking about folks FOS'ing to O4 so they get ADSEP'ed anyways. buttplug fucked around with this message at 03:39 on Apr 29, 2015 |

At this point you should stick it out to 20, MML. You can go be a terminal O-5 at some joint command doing fuckall but sitting in an office to wrap it up. It's not like you need to go back to sea for command because you don't give a gently caress about admiral.

The plan is to head to shore after this and just do jobs I find interesting and/or rewarding. I have no intention of going for the typical careerist stops like Millington. After that I'm going to play it by ear and see what my options in the real world are and make a decision based on that. Worse comes to worse I'll just finish my time in the reserves.

Japan is neat. Sasebo is way sleepier then Yoko, but that's fine by me. Japan is great for folks with no kids. There is a ton to see and do in country and lots of easy travel opportunities around the AOR.

Indeed. I did my first DIVO tour on a DDG out of Yoko before I lat transferred. At the time (as a boot ENS) it sucked. In retrospect, it was a great tour and I think it would be a *much* better experience going back there as an O4 to knock out my milestone tour. And yes, it's a single man's heaven (as is the rest of Asia in general). edit: If you get the chance, I highly recommend you get up to Hiroshima, Kyoto, Hakone (Mt Fuji), and Osaka. Tokyo is a given.

Howard Phillips posted:Gonna be detailing for 2nd tour soon. What's your personal take on sweep? First tour on Flight IIA DDG. I don't know about less formal, but DIVO's are more involved with everything going on then on traditional ships. I mean we're certainly less formal then my first tour cruiser, but about the same formality as my frigate. A lot of that depends on your CO/XO. Honestly though, I would stay away from sweeps as a DIVO or DH. This is a community on life support and is really the red headed step child of the fleet. None of the operations you do will help develop you professionally for the other 99% of surface warfare stuff. Plus, since the community is so small, any officer with any time on an MCM is automatically considered an "MIW expert" and will find themselves shuffled off to MIW related jobs that suck (ie all of them) regardless of what they want.

I was one of the few that would actually roam out and had a great time because of it. Yokohama owns. Roppungi owns. Shinjuku scared me Having a 90 year old dude whisper to me while pointing behind him 'libe show' .

CSG COMMO lines up much better, actually. I'm up for early orders negotiation next January and I doubt it'll be a hard sell...(single guy asking for 7th Fleet sea duty...would knock out my sea duty stint AND my O4 milestone in one shot). I would rather bask in the safety of the CSG N6 (O6 1820) and by extension the CSO (O5 1820) than get consistently kicked in the nuts by the SWO O6 CDRE. buttplug fucked around with this message at 14:50 on Apr 30, 2015 |

There was a cook on the ship with SPACE HOMOS and I. Guy would go on and on about his girlfriend. Turns out his girlfriend was just a hooker at a nearby brothel. To add insult to injury, he never actually hosed her and had just been loving her thighs. He was pissssssed when he learned what sex really was.

This is the same guy that got a bunch of cranks and a couple cooks sent to mast as well. They had been playing the ball tapping game in the galley. He wanted to be involved. They convinced him that they would collectively give him $50 to let the biggest CS on the ship punch him squarely in the balls. He agrees, gets punched, and they all welch. He goes to doc and complains about a sore stomach and asked for Motrin. HM1 grilled him for a half hour before he finally spills the beans.
