During high school Opeth was my go to hey I'm moody and depressed and need something to lose myself in. I was obsessed for a while. Now I can't care about anything before they went prog rock. It's a way better fit for them and my ears. Of course now that the discussion came up I feel like revisiting the old stuff. Even back in the day I felt like Damnation was their most honest, natural sound though.

Can anyone recommend me some newish death metal similar to early Bolt Thrower/Grave/Dismember/Asphyx? Sloppy leads, bad production and van Drunen copycats to the front of the line.

For what it's worth, I'll always think that Ghost Reveries was the best Opeth album in terms of production and songwriting. Everything just seemed to come together for that album and the huge buildup before the solo on Baying of the Hounds is probably my favorite moment in all of metal. Yeah, I can understand how people can think the band is boring with their 10 minute songs and repetition in a lot of riffs, but they're the master of working with mood and dynamics for their style of music. To their credit, the band got me to realize that growled vocals were "okay" to listen to and even to enjoy aesthetically. Up until that point in the mid 2000s, I never listened to death metal at all. So yeah, I'll gush about Opeth because I really like the band. poo poo I wish I could see them play Ghost Reveries in concert...

Have you guys heard the new Luciferian Light Orchestra? It's a Therion side project (Christofer Johnsson and some random dudes that are secret apparently) but I'm really loving digging it. I've always been a Therion fanboy, but I'm always expecting the worst. Their last album was covers of French love songs from the 70s, but I loving loved it. This is kind of similar but a cross between Sabbath and ABBA, but I can't stop listening to it. It's been getting really good reviews as well, so I'm not the only one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzzM_8FGS9o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHiYLkntxgE

Last time BG toured I drove to NYC to see them. And now they're both coming to me today is better than Christmas

Dammit, was all stoked to go to an Inter Arma show last night and they cancelled pretty last minute. No reason given yet, but I'd assume border issues. There's a kickass show at the Astoria on the 30th for any metal Canucks up for a range of styles: Neck of the Woods (prog-death) Astrakhan (psychedelic doom/sludge) Witch of the Waste (tech-death/post-hardcore) Quartered (alt-metal/hard rock) Vancouver has an awesome indie metal scene.
