It takes getting used to. You're not driving around a mostly flat track in the same sort of way that you'd drive a street car. Try to picture where your car's weight is shifting to as you go through a stage. As you probably know, the greater the force pressing your car into the road, the more traction you have. There are lots of bumps and jumps, and you're often sliding around, so the weight of your car isn't always pressing straight down into the road surface. Sometimes it's more, sometimes less. Try to turn in early and sort of "throw" your car into turns so that when the turn "catches" it, the car presses its tires down into the road and bites. Try this on some of the really sketchy Wales stages and you'll see what I mean.

Look further ahead this an you think you have to and start your turns earlier than you think you have to. It's fun and effective.

Yeah I know the gist of rally driving, I just need to Git Gud. I can really throw the cars around corners in Wales no problem, and it feels great doing so, but on the Monte Carlo stages I always end up attacking the corners way too early and smashing into the cliff face. :v:

I'm trying my best to get used to this fuckin' Audi Sport quattro Rallye, but gently caress this thing. It's like the worst of all worlds- you get the "I will spin for no god drat reason" of RWD, and the "losing a front tire means I'm literally worthless" of a FWD. Add to that the car's innate desire to go airborne(the number of times I've been in the middle of the road, hit a crest, and do a flip before hitting the ground is remarkable), and I am wishing there was a "Return to the dealer and punch him in the mouth" option.

I can drive a 1960s mini like a bat out of hell. And once I get used to it, I do great with the RWD Lancia.

Hoping I can find a 4WD that fits me better. If I could have the slide of a RWD/4WD while still maintaining good control I'd be a happy camper.

I think I'm just going to skip the Quattro, and just wait it out until after this next series for when I'll have enough to grab the Impreza. It's so dreamy. :swoon:

Just remember guys they are openly asking for your input to make this game better so find a thread on their official forums, steam or reddit where their Community Manager posts a lot and give your feedback on what they need to fix and what you want to see from it. This is how we got the league setup when they asked what we would like months ago in a reddit feedback thread.

I have been distracted by Dirt Rally so I haven't been working on Maple Valley for the past few nights. I'll try to get back to it this weekend if time allows.

In Dirt Rally I'm using these settings for the Thrustmaster TX and it feels great:

It doesn't hurt, but, like many rally games in the past, that info only helps so much because of how sections actually play out where some turns are so short and easily skip-able by going straight through you hardly notice them and others actually require a lot more or less braking than one would expect for [turn #]. Kind of wish you could go in and alter the notes (change a 4->3; a 3, 4 to a 3 long; etc.) for turns you don't feel are accurately represented for your driving style.

Some general comments after a long evening of play:
- I've only used the 60's Mini so far (aside from doing the daily race with the Stratos... I didn't need Traction Control assist on for the Mini despite using a controller, I might for the RWD ones because I was spinning all over the place), but it seemed alarmingly flip-happy on bumps (notably the rough-ish awkward jagged slopes that appear fairly frequently on the offroad [especially Wales] stages) that don't feel like they should. Not sure if this is a bug or just because it's so light. I even managed to get serious air (~1.5 Mini's high) hitting a ~half-tire-sized rock that's in the road on one of the Wales sections; a rock that big would dent up the front end pretty bad, but sending you flying seemed out of place, even at ~50 MPH. I hope I'm not alone in thinking things seem a bit excessively flip-happy. :ohdear:

- The AI difficulty settings seem out of whack. I'd like to think I'm above average at racing games, but I needed a basically flawless run to even win a stage in the Career events considered "Open" difficulty. I did some testing in the Event mode to see which 60's car I preferred and get a feel for things before starting the money-on-the-line Career and Professional difficulty seemed on par with Open (least for first place, maybe the lower rankings were much worse times). I guess working hard to be maintain second place in the standings is better than trampling the competition by a huge margin in that it pushes me to go faster (and, thereby, wreck more spectacularly).

- The way it instantly resets and penalizes you for touching the tape around people (even if you won't hit them) is really annoying. Same goes for only giving 9 seconds to get back on track despite possible re-joins taking longer in some situations.

- Lack of tutorial/assistance/section info (being able to look at the individual splits to see things like road composition, elevation change, or other useful info) as yet is a bit disappointing. I guess it doesn't matter since you don't seem to be able to pick tire types yet, but I can't for the life of me remember how light/medium/heavy gravel impacts driving from the old Colin McRae days.

Lastly, anyone got any tips beyond the in-game info on how to setup your car? Generally from the Default I went lower gear ratio (seemed pretty necessary with the Mini at least because that little 100 HP really needs the acceleration help; I still fairly rarely hit the top speed for my gearing [low 80's MPH]), went more balanced with brakes, and went a little softer with suspension/dampers. Sometimes I'd find my car bouncing on bumps (see the above point on flipping/car feeling light) and just uncontrollably bouncing my way off the racing surface before I could slow down or take any other corrective measures to prevent it. I don't know if, based on their explanations, this was because I didn't go soft enough to absorb the bumps or because I went too soft and it had to do with lacking car stability that let me be pushed into the bumps in the first place rather than holding a better line. So, yeah, if anyone feels like they've got a good grasp on car setups (or a link to someone who does), some tips would be appreciated.

My brother gifted it to me.

EDIT: And I just realized that the only Codemasters racing game from the last 10 years made for PC that I am missing is F1 2013.

EDIT2: oh sorry, missing F1 Race Stars and Toybox Turbos as well.

I couldn't when play that on controller, so I felt like it was a waste to get so early. Really good with a wheel though.

Dirt Rally is pretty tough. Though I've only done two races so far and I feel I should tweak my wheel settings more, as it feels like I need to turn way to much at 540 degrees.

Excited for Project Cars and also have a Rift DK2 that should get here Monday.

Did today's Daily race, that Ford Escort Mk 2 is actually really great. A bit underpowered compared to the Stratos, but much easier to control too. I wanna do the weekly, which is also 1970s, so I've gotta decide between the two, but I'm leaning toward the Stratos still.

Edit: And apparently the person at the top of the daily for the last two days running is a real Rally driver, Kevin Abbring.

How the hell did Stratos win three world championships, it's the squiggliest thing ever on gravel. Especially acute and hairpin corners are giving me grief on this thing, even thinking about touching the handbreak is an instant spin.

Learn how to be featherlight on the throttle. You don't need your handbreak nearly at all(except hard stops) if you learn to manipulate it for that. It feels like ice skating to me, but I used to do figure ice skating so it fits well.

If anyone's looking for a great Group B car for this month's monthly, pick yourself up a Peugeot 205 T16 Evo 2. She's disgusting.

Highest power in class at 480bhp, second lightest car in class. The only lighter car is only 46 pounds lighter, but gives up 80 horsepower to do it(the Lancia Delta S4).

Just do a manual start with this thing and you'll be in love. It rockets up off the line so fast you'll think it's gonna be hell in the corners- nope. Easy to control, very firm and smart. About the one issue I have is that if you do screw up, the tires seem more fragile than normal, but it could be just because I feel like I can take everything 10-20mph faster than I can in any other vehicle I've tried, so I just need to race better.

Favorite car in the game immediately, after two custom events with it.

I'm glad I went with the Mk 2 Escort, driving that thing around the Wales GB stages is rally nirvana.
