Advances in technology for the disabled is something that's always amazing and interesting to me. (I have an invisible disability. My limbs all work but I'm still handicapped in a lot of ways)

GunChicka posted:Nah, spinal cord injury. Mainly to help with blood flow and muscle atrophy. That's life. I was afraid of that. I have a very good friend who fractured his C3 or C2 or maybe those ended having to be fused but his cord was just crushed and not cut. A lot of PT, steroids, Botox and gawd knows what else and he can still walk and bike and drive and play vidya games, write code yada yada yada He was pretty pissed about the fine motor stuff and I refused to not wail on him at Capcom vs. SNK out of principle back in the day. but last time I played rock band with him he kicked my rear end v thoroughly.

syscall girl posted:I was afraid of that. Yea, the the spinal cord can be a finicky site to injure, c2 can be really really bad too. Mine was severed completely at t10 so there's no real recovery that can happen. The robot legs could be cool though if they advance more, but again very trying to use. I only made it the length of the hallway a few times with a walker and someone following me.

GunChicka posted:Thanks. Too bad it costs six figures and isn't approved for personal use. Looks and feels a lot better than this Well, I currently spend three days a week literally hooked to a stationary machine in order to stay alive so uh, high five cyborg buddy? EDIT: I hope I'm not coming off as jerkish, if so I'm sorry. I wasn't trying to call you out, I honestly think breakthroughs in medical science to help people do actually count as "super-cool" and just wanted to know more about the machine itself, not your condition. You're very brave to share with the thread. Here, have a picture of me in humility in return. Choco1980 has a new favorite as of 03:20 on May 4, 2015 |
