I really enjoy playing this but I've run into a problem, dunno if it's a bug or me doing something wrong. None of the tier 3 resources I have apply any pressure, but their secondary bonuses do work. I'm getting the capacity increase but no pressure, from any of the t3 resources I have. Tried other planets too, they just sit there at 0/16. I also don't understand why none of the civilian industry buildings are upgrading, they do on another labor world I have but not on this one.

Found the problem: you need more population (on the producing/exporting planet) in order to generate pressure. 8 population is the minimum required for a T3 resource but you need 16pop to get full pressure (and money/income)

Oh, facepalm, I've been keeping them at minimum population so I'd only have my important planets in the "enough pop to colonize" rider. Thanks!

I want to start a multigalaxy run but I have no idea of what a good ration of empires to stars would be. Any recommendations?

This game is too much fun. To solve the problem of the enemy retaking territory, I've been putting giant engines on captured enemy planets and driving them back through gates to my homeworld to join my collection. That's right, I am space carmen sandiago.

Have one star system with 100 planets and the rest of space is empty. Played a game recently, NPC (that had taken over a few other empires and had them as vassals) declared war on me, I had a loving huge military compared to them and asked them to surrender and they said no, had star destroying ships that popped a few stars and wouldn't you know it they surrendered pretty drat quickly! Any plans for Dyson spheres and planetary engines on those? ... can you move a ringworld with one? Hmm... I may need to try that.

So I lost my first game pretty quickly, mostly because I didn't really have much idea what to do, but I think I've got that under control. My question is, how important is the ship building? Can I play okay with the defaults, and if not, can I just download a bunch to get me mostly covered. I'm not really interested with fiddling around much designing things.

Or just grab ships off the user created ships which you can do from ingame from the community tab, there are lots of good ones.

The community page is nice, but I wish there was a way to sort or search by cost/labor/size/role/tech requirements. Once you've found a layout that works though, I like that I can just increase ship size as my econ gets rolling.

However every time I bump my capitals up a notch or two, I decrease the size of their weapons and add maybe one or two more. I like more dakka.

I usually come up with an internal story about my empire and why they do the things they do. It helps to have a bunch of portraits of varying styles to set the mood. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=430173181

By the by, I love the concept of The Expanse galaxy. With a little tweaking of the game options it can actually be pretty difficult too, the big one is Remnant Aggression. Being the only empire means the pirates always come after you too, so it's not without conflict, you're just not racing vs other empires. If competing with empires isn't your thing or you just aren't in the mood, I highly recommend trying that map. Space Skeleton fucked around with this message at 13:47 on May 3, 2015 |

If you do feel like competing and set a universe with multiple copies of The Expanse, it should be noted that the AI really doesn't really know how to handle it. Also there seems to be a minor bug that makes the remnant-homeworld fleets from galaxies 2 through N all generate in the first(?) galaxy, so one empire will have extra difficulty taking that system.

Well I picked this up due to Scott's stream and have worked my way through the tutorial. Getting ready to jump into my first game so.... wish me luck! One quick question I have about ship construction, however. I love, love, love the idea of building a spinal mount ship. Is that a possibility in this game? By that I mean, can I build a ship around a single, giganto weapon? Does the amount of... er... area given over to a weapon scale up its effectiveness?

Yes, though there is no specific bonus for building the ship around it save for the extra tiles you allocate to it, it just means the ship will punch above its weight a bit.

I have made spinal mount ships before and they work pretty well. It's a good idea to cover them in bulkheads. Also other mods as you unlock them.

Awesome, thanks for the feedback, folks. I just tootled around in game for an hour or so and got my rear end handed to me. Looks like I'm going to have to totally re-learn how to play these games. I know it's all been said before, but I gotta say that I'm having fun with the whole system. Resources, diplomacy, everything is pretty fun and streamlined. I'd say this is a nice middle ground between the no micro of SotS and the insane micro of more traditional 4xs like galciv. I am sure I'll have more questions as time goes by. I know it's being worked on but, man that research screen is hard to understand

I decided last night that I'd make star forges, and by george, I did it. I've found a very important thign while learning this game is to make sure not to neglect your infrastructure. It's easy to forget not to build megacities, etc. on your planets because they don't show up on the map, but if you're going for a centralized economy of any kind it's very important. Your top-tier planets need a ton of population to really make use of all the pressure you're feeding thing. Also discovered you can funnel labor from a planet in one system to a shipyard in another. This changes everything for me. Have a shipyard with nearing 100 labor now. Instantly builds super-battleships. So fun.

Lucas finally gave in to my demands and now there's a civilian trade activity slider! I'm fresh off a game with 1000% civilian trade activity. "Bustling" describes how it felt pretty succinctly. Also makes raiding enemy supply lines crazy-profitable. Looking forward to sharing this update with y'all. Apologies that it's coming so slowly.

Let me try to think of some criticism. The weakest point is the research screen but that is getting overhauled soon. It's not broken or unusable, just confusing at first. The AI gets confused if you play with them on The Expanse map but that's kind of an alternate game mode and in my opinion is more fun to play it solo as a relaxing mode or multiplayer vs your friends than with AI so it's not a major bug in my opinion. Other than that... uhh... Star Children can't live on ringworlds! More of a minor gameplay niggle, that.
