Yeah that's what I mean. Pick any scene from Season 1 that involved Ned Stark, King Robert or queen Cersei and compare it to this one. The scene with the Sand Snakes feels juvenile, I can't find a better word for it. Silly... and somewhat insulting to the the viewer's intelligence.

It's not only the difference in actors and their charisma, I understand that acting alongside Sean Bean can be unflattering to most, but still.. There have been precious few good scenes with Cersei in the last few seasons compared to the first ones. I don't know what's going on, did they change some of the writers or directors half-way through the series? I don't think their budget has been cut, at least not significantly. The quality has been dropping consistently from Season 2.

I don't think they're doing a good enough job illustrating Cersei's fall into mental illness and alcoholism. I think they've mentioned the wine once in Margaery's quips. Her actions don't fit with someone who is still in control of themselves and so the acting seems stilted and doesn't really fit.

If anything it seems like Cersei is trying to drink more responsibly this season, due to prior seasons having scenes showing her being a drunk while this one hasn't

Cersei isn't going to be as crazy on the show as she is in the books. In fact, it looks like part of the issue may be that Littlefinger comes and helps her screw up.

My favorite thing about cersei's chapters is when she says some bullshit and everyone just looks at her like you would an idiot who could have you executed. The subtext is glances from person to person silently asking "are we really not going to say anything? really?" and everyone agrees yeah default on your debt to the iron bank good job queen reagent. Make some bastard who nobody has ever seen before and has no allegiance to any house we know of the leader of the navy oh whoops he sailed off with all our boats but it was still a great plan I'd have done the same. Yeah gently caress it lets burn down the tower because a dwarf might live inside the walls that makes sense. Everything you do is the best cersei! Meanwhile her inner monologue is goddamn everyone here is an idiot except me I wonder what it's like to sexually assault this obvious spy haha no wonder robert did this so much this rules.

It's like that twilight zone episode where the child has mind powers (it's a good life?), but he only thinks he can read minds and punishes people for what he imagines they're thinking.

I haven't gotten nearly enough people biting their tongues around her while she makes horrible decisions in the show so far.

Good point. Why is this? Cersei is one of the characters that becomes much more wild and interesting in the books as the story progresses, but it has been the opposite in the TV series. Seriously, watch scenes with Cersei from the first two seasons, her charisma and chemistry with other actors, especially Peter Dinklage is amazing.

I felt this way about the books. I never understood how someone raised by Tywin could be such a complete loving idiot. Cersei felt like a one dimensional monster past a certain point. It felt like GRRMs writing just wasn't up to the task of a complex woman - he couldn't do a fraction of what he did with Jaime.

The closest he gets is some degree of paranoia - but her's reaches levels so far beyond what makes any sense, without even a drop of compromise in her body. I could see explanations for this... for example, maybe she is just someone who followed Tywins apparent example, without seeing behind the scenes at all. But if so, that needed more set up. But she just comes across EXACTLY like Jeffrey. Spoiled, uninformed, etc. I have a hard time believing that.

She is just sex starved / power hungry / dumb as gently caress / completely entitled / crazy. Sounds like GRRMS view of some rich girl who dissed him back in college.

I just needed to throw this out there again:

quote:

"Ten thousand of your children perished in my palm, Your Grace. Whilst you snored, I would lick your sons off my face and fingers one by one, all pale sticky princes. You claimed your rights, my lord, but in the darkness I would eat your heirs."

Basically its like "he raped me, and then I licked his semen off my lips because... well you know, to kill it. HAHAHAHAH I SHOWED YOU WHO IS BOSS!"

My mind cannot conceive of a woman who hates someone so much that after she is forced to jerk him off, she eats his cum and takes pleasure in it. Are they out there? maybe, but ... yeah. no.

I refuse to go look this up but I'm pretty sure she says it to herself in her inner monologue. All her chapters were her thinking to herself and then telling people to go gently caress up the kingdom and them saying okay and then she thought nasty things about them as they were leaving.

Yes, sort of. It was her drunk inner monologue explaining why he was such an awful person for all his whoring and her justification for never having bore him a son. Pretty sure Robert was passed out in bed, so it wouldn't have mattered if she said it aloud or just internally anyway.

GRRM is pretty weird about that kind of thing. Dany (who is 13 or 14 seriously what the gently caress) canonically likes the taste of cum. There are a few times where she wistfully reminisces about Drogo's cum it's seriously messed up why didn't he just age her up a few years if he wanted to write porn. GRRM should probably be in jail.

Shimrra Jamaane posted:

She remembers it in the fourth book where she actually has a POV, long after Robert dies.

"You claimed your rights, my lord, but in the darkness I would eat your heirs."

It's a pretty hosed up line. When Robert demanded sex (because in the fourth book he's retroactively a rapist, hope you didn't like him) she'd pleasure him orally instead.

That's the fun of it. She's so :smug: about all these awful choices she's making, even as absolutely everything around her is so obviously falling to pieces. The High Sparrow's flat little "No." that brings about her downfall is one of the most enjoyable moments in the series. She has the best storyline of Affc by a long way, if only because she actually gets a story, with an arc and everything.
