Whiskey A Go Go! posted:So I recently found one of my male friends is poo poo talking on facebook about how my girlfriend does BJJ and her friend does Judo with me. He believes that women who fight and train are not feminine and it is the man's role to protect the woman rather she protect herself. He thinks I "brainwashed" them into trying the marital arts against their will and I am going to confuse their role in society if they keep going forward in "male blood sports". Why are you friends with this person?

I dunno... A class with real knives and poo poo? Sounds dangerous. I think I'll stick to blunted ones.

Aikido taught me very little physically but I sure do ask myself "do I need to fight this or do I need to just glide on by" a lot. In this case you should glide on by with that unfriend button.

Whoah. I like being a Nordic person where being egalitarian is so big. I've been throwing all-female classes more than once tha past months where they punch the poo poo out of each other and apparently we're going to continue over the summer because the have been so popular. Complaints on social media to anyone involved? None. (edit: reason to being all-female isn't that men are not allowed: it's just that at our hood we have a ton of girls who want to train on Saturday and Sunday mornings while all the guys are still too hungover to come over, or busy with kids and family; the girls who train are usually younger and less drunk) Ligur fucked around with this message at 22:14 on May 4, 2015 |

Right now pretty much every female member needs to show at once if they want to have people their own size to spar with. Though I suppose some slightly smaller dudes could work as well. EDIT: On the mention of "blood sports": What do you guys think is the bloodiest martial sport/art? There only seems to be the occasional bloodied nose/sliced brow in muay thai. I assume it's going to increase as you move above the amateur level. Hawgh fucked around with this message at 22:22 on May 4, 2015 |

I just got one of those custom fitted mouthpieces and I feel like I've died and claimed my 70 virgins. Its sooooooo much better than a boil-and-bite, I knew it was gonna be an improvement but really I just wanted cool red teeth graphics and I had no idea how awesome this would really be.

I'm thinking about starting Judo over the summer and switching to bjj during the school year (I'm in college and there aren't any judo clubs within reasonable distance, but there is a school bjj club) Is this reasonable, or should I pick one and stick with it?

Seriously cracked up on that completely and my boss is looking at me like I lost a few screws You would really need to live in Sweden (or talk to Norwegian or Danish hardcore idealists) to understand the positions a lot of people have on things, but I'm classical liberal first, and somewhat conservative second, voted for a patriotic and rather populist party (though I appreciate and support the welfare state, so from an American POV - I'm probably a communist or at least a socialist hippie too!). Most of the people who post on D&D are a bit younger than me and are usually über-liberal and very far to the left - which makes a classical liberal or a conservative a monster to them. Especially if he votes a nationalist party and doesn't make it much of a secret! That can't be done! (Also, I find being a satan kinda amusing.)

I was expecting some kind of neo nazi or "dont let the evil muslems into our country because they are gonna take over and kill all christians" type of guy. Well that's one way how certain people want to portray who they consider their opponents as they talk about politicz on da net. Hell, they might even believe their projections on other people are actually true! I mean, "why does this and that person not agree with me... unless hmmm... maybe he is a skinhead, and didn't various hitlers say something a bit like he just did..." (As a Norwegian you probably know how big "anti-racism" is in Swedish society, how they almost religiously attempt to sniff such out, and throw the label on just about anyone and anything at the drop of a hat.) Doesn't make it true in the least, of course. (I train with muslims and have taught pretty radical left-wingers boxing, for example. Also I'm so neonazi and prejudiced my girlfriend was black and originally from Africa, my best training buddy for a long while was an immigrant latino lesbian etc etc.) edit: oh yeah I like to poke at people who are really stuck on certain views or get easily upset when their favourite political belief is the butt end of jokes or is called foolish, that might also explain some of my satanic aura Ligur fucked around with this message at 13:41 on May 5, 2015 |

I think it's reasonable. If you map out the decision tree of what you can do it comes down to train bjj or not train during the school year, right? You'll learn some cool poo poo and bjj and judo map onto each other really really well, especially for practice (as opposed to competition). When I've taken my judo to "club" level bjj practices people have really been surprised at the efficiency of the throws, especially the simpler ones, so that's fun. When I've taken the bits of bjj I know to a judo practice, I get lots of arm bars Really, anyone who says that you shouldn't go learn something new, especially when it's all you can train, is a dork.

International Judo is the best example of how adding rules ruins a sport and why the IOC should never be allowed to influence anything. HEY GUYS LETS ADD A LITANY OF RULES TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO DO CERTAIN TYPES OF THROWS SO THAT IT LOOKS COOL ON TV - best strategy becomes to grip fight and run out of bounds as a defensive manouvre. I'm really salty about this because Judo is so awesome and the IOC ruined it as a competitive spectator sport. It's unwatchable now.

If you want cool throws then being forced out of bounds should score points. That's why you get all those gigantic throws in shuaijiao, everyone has to be pushing into each other all the time.

It's much riskier to try to force someone backwards in gi compared to no-gi. You very rarely see force-outs in shuaijiao because being aggressive in that way will get you thrown when someone's grabbing your lapel or sleeve. Of course, there are other rules that affect this, like if you both have a grip for a few seconds without a throw attempt the ref will force you to change grips. Also, watch sumo, sumo is great. I'm of the opinion that the only reason that something should be banned from a sport is for safety. Judo banned scissor takedowns when I was a teenager because too many people were getting hurt, uke or tori. Cool - I was at a regional tournament when a girl dislocated her hip trying to attack with a kani basami, and that poo poo was loving terrible. On the other hand, they later banned double-leg takedowns from competition "because it looks too much like wrestling." That's retarded, and I'm not just saying that because I used to land mae garis on people who had never considered that their opponent could change levels. To make a sport more exciting, you need to make it less predictable, and you achieve that by giving the competitors more freedom to be creative and to surprise each other, not by stifling any competitive creativity because it runs contra some conservative vision of the "pure" version of the sport.

Went to the local bjj club and did a class of submission wrestling. I have only been grappling with a gi (8 years of judo) so going no-gi made me a real beginner once again. Stand-up or grappling in the ground, there wasn't much I could do if the other one was a more experienced wrestler. Got tapped and taken down a lot and that's alright of course, but two minutes before the end of practice my ankle somehow got tangled and went pop. Hurts a bit and walking is pretty awkward, tomorrow I'll see how bad it is. Martial arts really are humbling, even though I've been practicing years and years and gotten kinda good in one form of grappling, everything I know goes out of the window once the thing changes up a bit, like taking the gi out of the question or you add leg locks or striking or whatever. Training is like a project you'll never be able to finish and no matter how good you are, something stupid will happen and you'll get hurt every now and then. I guess this is the deal of going up a mountain, getting on top, being proud and happy and then seeing it was just a hill and there's an even bigger mountain after it. There sure is a lot to do.

sumo is the best grappling based spectator sport by far. the ruleset is just perfect compromise of safety for the athletes and flashy plays for the audience. its fairly dangerous but kinda safe at the same time
