mooyashi posted:yeah doesn't USPS do "last mile" stuff for UPS, maybe FedEx? not just last mile, though that's huge for ups and fedex basically everywhere outside major cities. there's all sorts of contracts where a ups plane often carries usps stuff as well, in return usps stuff will carry some ups and fedex stuff, and fedex planes can carry usps stuff. sorting centers are often shared in outlying areas. so basically there's usps involved in the "first mile" and "middle mile" often enough as well as last mile. hell these days ups and fedex only put up token push to get first class mail opened to them for access, largely because they realize they could only make a profit on it in a few small segments of a few cities, but giving up the push entirely looks bad for them. fedex and ups would go to poo poo if they couldn't rely on the things the usps is able to do, and they can never hope to profitably run it for themselves. capitalism accidentally saves us from further capitalism
