I love PBS' Idea Channel on YouTube, and recently they had an episode about a cartoon called Steven Universe and how it explores the idea of family.

I hadn't watched the cartoon, but that video piqued my interest, and now I'm 25 episodes in within two days. Seriously, if you're having a bad day, the show is some of the most heartwarming, adorable, yet still semi-mature thing.

(And yes, there's an episode where his fingers turn into cats; I had to change my username and avatar immediately.)

Cab Calloway is always entertaining as hell to watch. And I love that he was such a huge influence on Danny Elfman, he pretty much got the Beetlejuice theme from when they're dancing on the piano.

Cab Calloway is the loving man. He somehow managed to be a consistently amazing performer for like 60 years. Also, he once got stabbed by Dizzy Gillespie.

Forgive the weird frame that's on this video for some reason, but I love this. Especially the way Cab conducts the band:

Last night, getting close to closing up the store I work at, a dog comes walking through. He had figured out how to use the automatic doors, and with an easy pace wandered around looking for his people. He left on his own, leaving everyone who saw him confused, so my boss and I went to investigate.

We found him alone outside and called him over. Unlike most lost dogs, he came trotting over and sat with us as we looked for tags or tattoos (none found). A little damp from the rain we'd been having, he loved the scratches and warm bodies to lean against as we tried to figure out what to do. Calling the city proved useless, as on a Saturday night there's not really any place that can pick up (or even drop off) a lost dog. There's no way we were going to let him keep wandering around; it was going to get cold that night.

So amazingly one of our regular customers, who loves dogs and has a couple of her own, decided she'd shelter the dog overnight. She opened up her van's door, and he climbed in, curled up, and fell asleep nearly instantly.

It made me so happy that people are so ready to help, and give this poor old dog a warm place to stay until he finds his family again.

I absolutely adore this show but I highly highly recommend watching it before you watch the Idea Channel video on it because there are a shitload of powerful moments (like a huge season-end character reveal) that are just casually intercut as supporting points to the argument being made.

It is hands-down the best, most loving show I have ever watched. I don't get to see my partner very much because of conflicting schedules, but we always make time to watch Steven Universe together over breakfast.

Boss, if they make us find seven lost crystals, I'm quitting.

Steven Universe makes me smile like a lunatic and also ruins me. Jesus, that show has some serious tear-jerker moments. "Well, I think you're pretty great." MY HEART.

Oh, one thing that took getting used to for me about the show though. Steven is voiced by an actual kid, not an adult voice actor doing a child's voice, and for the first few episodes I found it kind of grating, but not SUPER obnoxious (not as bad as that show Chowder or whatever, I heard a five second clip of that and almost puked in disgust). I got used to it after a while, and by about episode 20something I think his voice changes and is a lot better.

You sure you're not talking about Adventure Time? Zach Callison isn't exactly a kid anymore, and he does affect his voice to play Steven. Jeremy Shada, who voices Finn, started out when he was a kid and you can almost pinpoint the exact moment he hit puberty while working on the show. I dunno, I'm not trying to call you out or anything. :shobon:

Well, Callison is, what, 16? His voice is still a fair bit higher pitched than an adult naturally. But yeah, he does affect Steven's voice, it's just pretty close to his normal voice still. Which is fortunate because it let them tweak it into something much better partway through season one.

I think read somewhere he'd actually force his voice to crack on purpose for some of Finn's lines to make it obvious Finn was aging too. Kind of cool if true.

Danny's brother Richard wrote and directed the film, and he's working on a sequel presently. I really don't have high expectations for it, because the original is a definite product of the weird artsy counter culture of the early 80's and is totally lightning in a bottle. Another film that is weird and couldn't be made any other time was Liquid Sky if you want a different example.

Not really though? Like, of all the various characters on the show, Steven's the furthest from the natural voice of the actor.
