With Don Mattrick out and founder Mark Pincus reinstalled as CEO, what will Zynga’s future look like? For one, think a bit smaller: The company said today that as part of a $100 million cost reduction program, it would lay off 364 people, 18 percent of its total headcount, and focus on five categories of mobile games rather than continuing to branch out into more and more genres as it did under Mattrick. Those categories are Action-Strategy (such as Empires and Allies, a new game launched yesterday), Social Casino (Hit It Rich), Invest & Express (FarmVille), Casual (Words With Friends) and Racing (CSR Racing). The layoffs will finish within the next three quarters, according to a company press release, and are expected to save $45 million every year. Zynga expects to cut $55 million in other costs by the third quarter of 2016, but will take on restructuring charges of between $18 million and $22 million in the current quarter.

Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. Thomas Edison may have invented the lightbulb (it’s up for debate). But who invented the Let’s Play video? It might be a guy known online as “slowbeef.” who invented electricity? who invented antibiotics? who invented pokemon?

Candidate asks on Quora if they should work at Zenefits or Uber. Zenefits CEO rescinds the candidate's offer for asking, and posts about it. Then edits his comment, though Quora keeps the history and lots of people saw it. http://www.quora.com/What-is-the-best-way-to-start-my-career-Uber-or-Zenefits

Necc0 posted:itsHappening.gif quote:Though a human "driver" will need to sit behind the wheel in case of an emergency... That guy. That guy right there will be liable for any accidents. And he/she will need to be able to take over at a moment's notice, so they can't drink alcohol or sleep or whatever, basically they will have to be nearly as alert as you would normally driving. I think I've ranted about this before here, but I'm personally convinced we won't see fully autonomous cars until we see strong AI. There are situations where even I'm a bit confused as to what I should do behind the wheel, and often have to exchange looks/handsignals with other drivers to relay my intent (ever driven in new orleans? So many streets Up Town are so narrow they're effectively one way, if two cars are coming its sort of non-trivial to decide who needs to back up) The best we could hope for is MAYBE having an autonomous car that can go into panic mode and have some remote operator take control. But that has all kinds of other concerns, what if the driver can't remotely connect? The car would just sit there helplessly beeping or something? That itself can be dangerous, what if THAT causes an accident. Even if it did somehow work flawlessly and 100% autonomous, we have to think about how much less reliable a complex grid of sensors and computers would be. How do we know its still working after 10 years of sitting outside, when wiring harness start dry rotting and spiders start nesting in some camera's vision, goofy bugs get discovered. Hydraulic brakes were invented in the 1920s, yet cars STILL come with a backup brake (that can be used for more than just emergency braking of course). 100 year old technology still has a backup because cars are dangerous, yet we actually think fully autonomous cars will be "proven" enough to be trustworthy within our lifetimes?

what will probably happen is that people will fall asleep anyway but since the computer will work 99% of the time the net result will be much safer than before and the 1% of the time it fucks up you blame the driver and keep trucking on

computer parts posted:what will probably happen is that people will fall asleep anyway but since the computer will work 99% of the time the net result will be much safer than before Thats probably exactly what will happen, and I think it'll be a net positive. Humans and computers are good at exactly opposite things in this case. Computers can handle the mind numbingly boring interstate driving part, and humans can handle the "oh poo poo someone spilled something in this intersection. This lady is waving her hands at me telling me to go around... she isn't a cop though why should I trust her? Should I really go into the opposing lane to get around? What about over the median, hmm" situations

The trick will be to get rid of all the human drivers and rebuild the signal infrastructure for computers. If you could manage that, driving could be 100% automated tomorrow.

The cars are intended for driving in urban and suburban settings, not on highways. The low speed will probably keep the cars out of more restrictive regulatory categories for vehicles, giving them more design flexibility. So these things could hit me at 25 miles per hour but its cool because its got some foam. If they ever do start using these, even on their campus, the first guy who gets hit is gonna be a millionare after the lawsuits.

The best is when there is one faded set of lines and another freshly painted set of lines because they're redoing that part of the road and for a second your brain is like "oh shiiiiitttt" And then the truck crashes because the "emergency pilot" was reading the paper.

they should make automatic cars that travel on their own roads. and then travel at a regulated speed. and probably hook together if they're going the same direction. and also fit into a track so they don't go off the path. and have gates to prevent cars from running into them.

although i guess this whole business of having a dude in the drivers seat ready to step in if his vehicle starts doing bad stuff basically brings the operation of a truck more in line with what it's like to drive a train.
