Its dumb because correctly taxing corporations and the rich would net more money that is actually supposed to be taxed rather than changing how foreign purchases are taxed.

What's wrong with taxing online services? I can understand not bothering collecting GST on physical goods under the value of $500. But why shouldn't we pay GST for online content?

There are companies operating in Australia physically that don't pay tax. Online services are run from remote locations under different governments. I'd rather focus on the companies that are here and should pay tax before international companies.

Do we pay some sort of US sales tax in the base price of Netflix because it's based there?

open24hours
Jan 7, 2001

Doesn't Netflix have an Australian operation anyway? If they're selling stuff in Australia primarily to Australians then it only seems fair that they charge GST. Charging it on Netflix subscriptions that people buy from the US arm of the company may be less so.

People should be paying tax for this service delivered from international services!

Except once you get past a certain threshold you can play I'm never paying tax to the ATO again and just employ more accountants and lawyers than the ATO can afford to. If your lawyers keep the ball in the air (Your determinations before the courts long enough) it becomes uneconomic for the ATO to pursue the revenue. The best bit is every single cent of that mighty endeavour is a tax deduction.

how would it be implemented or enforced? Online vendors operating outside Australia are unlikely to be interested in collecting GST for the Australian government.

Does Netflix have any legal or physical presence in Australia, or is it just a website for Australians and everything is actually in the US (or wherever)?

To be fair this government can't even do one single thing, let alone chase multiple taxation options.

EDIT: Taxing Netflix and online services is fine, it's only going to increase the cost by about $1 anyway. But it's really just a smokescreen to cover the fact that Hockey doesn't want to chase big multinationals that use loopholes.

It's fine for netflix to pay tax. Corporations that avoid our current tax laws should be brought to heel and pay tax. These two statements are unrelated. Argument solved.
