I wouldn't really want it to happen, but it would be pretty funny if Labour managed to form a majority without the SNP, and then Scotland was left without any influence on the government at all.

'Pretty funny' as in giving the SNP all the ammo they need for a generation as they can rightly point out that Scotland is once again ignored by Westminster? That's fine with me really, if the coalition has shown anything it's that being in coalition as a minor partner is not good for your health. So I would rather we had a tangible benefit.

Having said that, quite a lot of MPs have very little to do with their constituency. Important party figures who want to become MPs are often 'parachuted' into safe seats.

That said, it's generally a requirement that candidates establish legal residency in the place they're representing, and beyond that, having local ties is generally looked upon as a good thing and the people running are mostly going to be from the place in question. The concept of having a candidate running for a safe seat that they're not from and don't have any connection with is one of the weirder things about British politics from an American point of view. It is very rare for someone to run for office in a place that they don't live in or have some connection to.

Constituent service is a huge part about being in the American Congress, whether House or Senate. If the media catches wind of a Congressperson who's spent a disproportionate amount of time in the capital it usually blows up and has severe consequences in the election, regardless of party. Gotta shake those hands and bring home that money. I'll have to say that having like 10-20x as many people in one's constituency means one is perceived to be beholden more to its interests. Whipping votes in the 20th century for either party was notoriously difficult because of geographical-ideological differences, though that's pretty much gone now.

But yeah its basically a charade. I suppose it's partly to do with how candidates are selected. Here the local party may select the candidate, but they'll basically do what the national party tells them. When you have a big public primary like in the US, you can campaign against someone pretty effectively saying they're a DC insider who doesn't know the real people of the constituency or whatever.
