Hell, there's only like 160 light-rail cars or so in the whole system anyway. Just stick a couple National Guard soldiers on each car.

Arguments from ignorance or lack of imagination are logical fallacies for a reason. Maybe they don't want people gathered on the platforms waiting to get on or off the light rail. Maybe their routes to the nearest hospital cross the rail at several points and they want to ensure there are as few things as possible holding things up. Maybe they have to pick and choose what they can and cannot control based on numerous conflicting political, security and emergent needs? Maybe there's some other poo poo going on that isn't publicly disclosed because it helps to keep the President safe? Why? I don't know, because I'm not a member of the Secret Service.

What I do know is this: We live in a country that has a repeated history of attempted and successful presidential assassinations. We have a repeated history of folks who like to kill others in highly creative and public ways. We have a history of Presidents receiving regular and numerous threats on their life and the life of their families. Despite recent news, the Secret Service has actually done a rather good job over the past several decades keeping Presidents safe from harm. I think that's a good thing for society at large - it keeps our government stable and ensures that power at the highest level changes hands through elections, not killings. I presume you think this is a good thing as well.

If that means being a pain in the rear end once every few years, so loving what?

I'm going to speculate it's more a concern of the motorcade being held up at a level crossing either because of normal train operation (the trains don't/can't just stop) or because of nefarious reasons, attempting to disable a train to delay the motorcade or even just disable a train so that normal traffic cannot take that route, thus making people divert to an alternate route, perhaps one that the motorcade has designated a primary or secondary route leaving that much more congested for the motorcade to deal with.

I feel like talking about income inequality led to a lot of the push we're getting now for minimum wage. And at least most of the talk now is about how much we're going to raise the minimum wage, rather than whether or not we're going to raise it (I mean, in the U.S.; not Seattle, because we already raised it).

I feel like Sanders could shift the discussion in a similar direction, push the boundaries of what we're allowed to talk about in the mainstream.

Is there a thread where the Trans-Pacific Partnership is being discussed? OPB did an interview with the White House press secretary this morning and he said that TPP will supposedly cause Nike and other places to "create tens of thousands of jobs" in the US. Is there any reasoning behind how that's supposed to work, beyond "it's free trade lol"?
TPP will "create tens of thousands of jobs" the same way cutting taxes for the rich does, and allowing offshore tax scams does.

quote:

A new Wikileaks-published leak from the secretive Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) treaty reveals a January 2015 draft "Investment Chapter" of the agreement, where the investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) mechanisms are set out. They allow companies to repeal nations' environmental, health and labor laws.

...

The Investment Chapter highlights the intent of the TPP negotiating parties, led by the United States, to increase the power of global corporations by creating a supra-national court, or tribunal, where foreign firms can "sue" states and obtain taxpayer compensation for "expected future profits". These investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) tribunals are designed to overrule the national court systems. ISDS tribunals introduce a mechanism by which multinational corporations can force governments to pay compensation if the tribunal states that a country's laws or policies affect the company's claimed future profits.

Whenever you create scam laws to sue for "future profits" youre just playing the same game the music industry did suing grandmothers for piles of cash because that one song their grandkid downloaded "might have" spread to thousand of people.

The hoped-for harsh treatment of copyright violations is at sharp odds with the gutting environmental regulations (and the financial punishments to be inflicted on countries that "stop future profits" by protecting environmental concerns).

https://wikileaks.org/tpp-sacrificing-the-environment.html

quote:

...

On 13 November last year, WikiLeaks released the secret draft text of the Intellectual Property Rights Chapter, which showed how nations were forced to change laws and to prosecute in defence of the biggest corporate interests in the field of IP rights.

In sharp contrast, the Environment Chapter does not include enforcement mechanisms serving the defence of the environment; it is vague and weak, and adheres to the lowest common denominator of environmental interests.

The word “appropriate” is found in various forms in 43 places in the draft text, in such contexts as: “Where possible and appropriate, the Parties shall seek to complement and utilise their existing cooperation mechanisms and take into account relevant work of regional and international organizations.” The word “may” is also found 43 times in the 23-page draft.

In the draft Consolidated Text, governments are urged to “...make every effort to arrive at a mutually satisfactory resolution...”, “...by any technological means available agreed by the consulting Parties...”, “...on the basis of objectivity, reliability and sound judgment...”, “...provided that the disputed Parties so agree...”, “...take measures to prevent...”, “...shall make best efforts...”, “...exercise restraint in taking recourse...”, “...in recognition of the importance...”, “...each Party retains the right to make decisions...”, “...adopt or maintain appropriate measures...”.

A selection of other favourite words in the draft include: “enhance” (12), “consider” (12), “encourage” (11), “address” (10), “endeavour” (9) and “seek” (9).

The Environment Chapter clearly shows the intention to first and foremost protect trade, not the environment. The principle is spelled out in this draft that local environmental laws are not to obstruct trade or investment between the countries. Furthermore, there is great emphasis on the self-regulatory principle when it comes to environmental protection, and emphasis on “...flexible, voluntary mechanisms, such as voluntary auditing and reporting, market-based incentives, voluntary sharing of information and expertise and public-private partnership”. But even such measures should be designed in a manner that “...avoids the creation of unnecessary barriers to trade”.

quote:

How The Leaked TPP ISDS Chapter Threatens Intellectual Property Limitations and Exceptions

...

Following a recent trend, explained below, the leaked ISDS chapter of the TPP proposes to give private companies the ability to enforce public international law whenever a local regulation “either directly or indirectly” expropriates any “investment.” (Art. 11.7). The term “indirectly” opens the process to consideration of what in U.S. constitutional law is referred to as a “regulatory taking” – that is a regulation or regulatory action that diminishes the value of property, even if the government does not take ownership of the property.

The term “investment” is incredibly broad, including

every asset that an investor owns or controls, directly or indirectly, that has the characteristics of an investment, including such characteristics as the commitment of capital or other resources, the expectation of gain or profit, or the assumption of risk.

Like the 2012 U.S. Model Bilateral Investment Treaty, the definition of “investment” explicitly includes “intellectual property,” as well as “other tangible or intangible, movable or immovable property.”
