I think we should keep the flag we have now, until we decide to become a republic. Then we can get a new flag. On the other hand, perhaps this is a step towards becoming a republic. We get a supreme court, we change the flag, then something else, then we become a republic. I suspect this is legacy building for key though, he wants to be remembered as the guy that changed the flag not the guy that assaults wait staff. Either way, the Maori flag is cool but also a design that keeps the southern cross is cool too because in my naive opinion the southern cross is important for Maori because sea navigation?

Personally I'm in favour of changing it to the silver fern if we change it at all. It's already part of our cultural identity, whether we like it or not. The design and colours aren't politically or culturally exclusive to either Pakeha or Maori (as far as I know), instead it's just New Zealand. And there are already tons of the flags out there, you'd just have to chuck out the old ones and not change too much. Hell, it's already on our passports. Can't get more official than that, right?

Picking the Silver Fern flag would be awful. It's such a corporate logo, elevating it to a sovereign flag would be an insult. I would rather have a pair of crossed AK-47s than the silver fern. Yeah, this poo poo is all legacy building so he can pull the ponytail of the country. Given the opportunity he really would sell us out to the Americans.
