I'm looking forward to this lone wolf build, I hope you talk about some of the changes to the scout tree before we actually get to them, it'd be cool to hear about some of the different things the Long War devs are doing.

I'm going to toss my vote for this on the pile. Sometimes your nicknames don't need to be clever, just defining. Hunkering down next to a car that's about to blow up cause your commander said so is pretty defining.

I might discuss some changes that occurred between betas, there was a huge change that occurred at the Tech Sergeant level (rank 5, assuming rookie is rank 0) for scouts that I will be sure to bring up when it comes by. In this case drat Good Ground was dropped for Low Profile at the Corporal rank.

I just took a moment of time to research what country I'm from because I'm not super familiar with a whole bunch of country flags, but apparently I hail from Pakistan.

Which shares a border with Kashmir where the spice, saffron, is typically grown and cultivated. And this is fairly close to South-East Asia, the voice pack you decided to settle on for me.

That's one hell of a crazy coincidence. Almost like the games knows. :tinfoil:

I do appreciate the fact that the flyboys of XCOM are starting to display a trend of operating in pairs. Almost as though they would work more effectively if a wing of them could be sent after alien craft instead of one at a time...

A reasonably simple mission for training. Due to the overall lack of specialists, I opted to take a risk and brought 3 rookies - not normally a good idea in the middle of May, but I think it worked out quite nicely! I kind of regret taking Platoon, though. His services would be better utilized on tougher missions.

Perk Talk

Heat Ammo v. Advanced Fire Control v. Shredder Ammo

Heat ammo gives you +50% damage versus robotic/mechanical units (the extra damage ignores DR, and there is a 2 damage minimum from the heat effect). In prior versions it was +75% and a lot more viable than it is now. For me, this means we need more heat, because large mechanical units in the late game can ruin you.

Shredder Ammo gives your ammo the Shredder effect. It is step 2 of the bullet wizard build (holo target them, and shred them).

Advanced Fire Control is kind of a lovely opportunist. It removes the aim penalty from overwatch, but doesn't allow you to have a crit on an overwatch shot.

Heat and Shredder are up to player preferences. I like making the majority of my gunners Heat gunners, and a couple of them shredder/bullet wizard gunners.

If you seriously want to make an overwatch gunner, then take Advanced Fire Control. I would only take this perk if I was doing a gimmicky 'Mostly Gunner Squad'. Honestly, an overwatch gunner undermines the gunner's ability to suppress, and gunners already get 'opportunist' when they take a reaction shot with suppression.

That was a nice and quick bag'n'tag mission. 5 aliens, 3 rookies, easy pickings. It's pretty cool to hear there's extra little things you can do to get rookies bonus exp, are there any other things like activating a tough alien, or is that just the extent of it?

ProfessorBooty

I think that's it. 80 XP for going on the mission, 25-ish XP for going on a mission with no downed soldiers, 25-ish XP if a weak soldier activates a 'difficult' pod. I don't play too much 'excel-com', so the only thing I know that works every time is activating the command group of a UFO with a rookie. Coincidentally that's why all the rookies got a promotion in mission 3, I didn't know about that last thing until about a week ago.

Its something like 25 XP for administering the killing blow on an alien. Later on there will be small items and officer perks that improve how much XP a soldier gets.

Evil Kit

Well that's a bit boring, they could of done something like psi soldiers getting extra XP for grabbing meld or something. The fumes would help expand their minds or some poo poo, I dunno. Missed opportunity.

I also have to say Booty, I really look forward to updates and this is probably the first LP where I've been really anxious when I don't see any updates in too long. Also there's a limited number of officer billets available. I think at the start you're limited to only three lieutenants, increasing with OTS upgrades and total ranks. That's one of the things I like about LW. In vanilla, you'd end up with your squad full of colonels, which is just silly for a number of reasons.

Of course, in LW you end up with your squad full of master sergeants, which is pretty silly as well.

Yeah, having a different way of ranking people past corporal would be cool (even something as simple as 'Corporal 2', 'Corporal 3'), then there could be some sort of NCO rankings that work differently from the officer rankings (Sergeant, Tech Sergeant ...) that are also limited in number (but not as limited, maybe a max of 2 or 3 master sergeants), less powerful, but at the same time allow psions.

But XCOM is its own little organization anyway, and they don't have to deal with the trappings of real life military rank structure, so there's no problem just making everyone a Master Sergeant :downs:

I consider myself much more of a listener than a talker, so I wouldn't expect to see a plethora of posts from me. But from this point forward I will at least periodically log in and respond to questions/comments directed specifically at me (if there are any).

Right. This mission. I finally found one weird disadvantage to taking the roof. Not shown is skipping the 10 minutes or whatever to get Jimmy4400nav out of fatigue.

After reviewing the footage, there's a bunch of things I could have done to mitigate the floater problem.

- Used overwatch to pin the floaters in place.
- Kept shotgunners in the back to protect the flanks, keep long range troops in the front to engage those floaters (Zore and Gridlocked were not properly utilized).
- Paid more attention to audio cues so I could have a better idea where the floaters went.
- Steady rocketeers when they end the turn in cover.

I could have prevented the problem by being aware of the potential to activate bad guys across the roofs.

I know now to respect lift-off a lot more in the future, especially in a situation like this that's ripe for floater ambushes.

The biggest problem was that I couldn't take cover at the edge of the roof due to the risk of activating aliens in the streets. It was pretty unlucky to have every single drat pod on the same side of the map as me. I think the trap I set in the end was pretty good, though.

I do think I realized how much trouble I really was in when I immediately went for a rocket. I should have been steadying Kurieg after every turn. He's just not good enough yet to fire unsteadied rockets unless they're 'non-vital' rockets. If the rocket worked out in turn 1 versus the floaters there wouldn't have been a problem. Also, I gave Kurieg a shredder rocket spare instead of a traditional rocket. Shredder rockets are great at either making large HP units more vulnerable (which I don't have to worry about in this stage of the game), or for clumped up smaller mechanical units (which, again, aren't a big concern). So I should have given Kurieg a second rocket spare.

But in general things worked out. Too bad about Jimmy.

:siren:Congratulations Gridlocked in achieving Corporal Rank! Gridlocked needs a nickname!:siren:

Also, I'm probably going to spend a lot more time planning my moves - I think I'm rushing the game a little too much. I'll probably start editing out tactics-chat, or at the very least, start making truncated video alternatives - anyone have thoughts on that?

No time to talk about mechanics now! We have stuff to do!
