I'm irrationally irritated that there aren't far more giant interconnected fun movie franchises like the MCU. I'm excited to see Matt Tracker in the next GI Joe Anyway, it's not like they make superhero movies instead of some Oscar Bait pieces of Fine Cinema.

I am a normal adult who like comics and am really enjoying the MCU movies. The only one I haven't bothered to repeat was Captain America 1. I also enjoy some video games and most food. Christ, what an rear end in a top hat.

Ya, at the very least, O'bannon (script), Giraud (aka Moebius, costumes) and Giger first met during the Dune preproduction. Also O'bannon's & Moebius' The Long Tomorrow was basically the style guide for Bladerunner.

Of course any work an artist or anyone spends lots of time on is going to influence their projects going forward, because humans experience time on a linear scale and nothing is invented completely out of the ether even on a metaphysical level. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of what Giger worked on with Dune was a big influence on his work going forward, but that tends to be the case with most prolific artists that they find themes which consciously or unconsciously repeat themselves throughout their work-- Stephen King gets chided for abusing the magical negro trope which transmuted into a magical child/magical savant trope; Stephen Spielberg movies tend to feature daddy issues and for a while in the 80s he was the best at portraying lower-middle class suburban family life; when Grant Morrison writes a comic you can usually expect some commentary on metafiction; Neil Gaiman loves to talk about gods and mythology in relation to the human animal; Terry Pratchett's entire oeuvre was all underscored by gentle humanism--and these themes are usually carried forward through various iterations of work over the years even though their landmark works tend to make it appear as though creatures like the Xenomorph appeared out of some divine inspiration. I mean they kind-of did, but there's always a clear lineage if you're willing to do some historical research. Meanwhile we can point to the finished product of Aliens as well as the legions of media that came after it--particularly video games--and trace its direct influence much more clearly and directly from one set of artists-- Giger and Ridley Scott--to another--James Cameron--to countless other game developers, which is a reasonably unique lopsided ratio.

And everything fantasy is LOTR  Seriously though the amount of real technology that was invented based on sci-fi from Star Trek or Alien is pretty amazing.

I watched a bit of the second Thor movie. The weird pronunciations of various Norse words like Bifröst and Heimdallr bugged me a little bit. Sure, it's an American movie. Doesn't mean you can't say things correctly!

In Danish, Bifrost is spelled with an O instead of an Ö (also, Americans don't know what the gently caress's up with ÆØÅÖÄ etc.), so saying "frost" is perfectly OK. But they really should learn the proper pronunciation of "bi", because they make it sound like it's a dual rainbow of some such nonsense.

The inventor of the modern cell phone literally said that Star Trek's communicators inspired him. Although googling for it apparently he later refuted that statement and said that it was instead Dick Tracey's wrist radio that inspired him.

I like that in Trek they got the right idea with tablets but they sort of missed the point by having Picard sat there with huge stacks of them on his desk.
