I feel like I'm the outlier here for not getting into any fantasy novels beyond Lord of the Rings and the other peripheral Tolkien stuff.

I read lots of Squadron/Signal aircraft histories and car magazine articles instead. Not sure if that makes me worse.

I've never read a fantasy novel outside of Tolkien and Martin. I was the kid who'd download D&D pdfs cause I liked reading about a fantastical culture and setting. I really like maps. :spergin:

oh i legit didn't know that

hm ok i will withdraw my question

still though its a legit question of why does the fantasy trend to multiple volumes that are each a doorstopper vs sci fi "doorstopper when you put together the whole story"

especially since many generic sci fi authors do the same obsessive details etc

its even more fun now if you play with the right group

it can be a bonding and collective creative exercise, most teen groups it's just fantasy fulfillment

last time i played d&d (pathfinder) i played as an objectivist ur-capitalist priest who refused to heal anyone without cash up front, it was fun as hell

by the end of our campaign i was rolling around with multiple followers just to carry all my gold chains and chests of fancy clothing, and would gently caress with the rest of the party by refusing to go dungeon crawling when we could hire armies of stooges to do that for us while i franchised temples to my god

its a self described identifier, makes sense because nobody else knows who grognards are and a grognard is an old crotchety vet who has seen things, terrible things, and doesn't fit in to society
