Murodese posted:Most of the problem with IT education (in WA, at least) is that the teachers fuckin suck. I've met most of the IT teachers in the state through outreach stuff we do, and there are a handful (maybe 4 that I can think of?) that are genuine IT teachers and not repurposed relief chemistry teachers. As a chemistry teacher, I can't help but feel this is a jab at me. I am however also a fully trained IT teacher who teachers neither Chemistry or IT. Hilarious, isn't it? I'd be a great IT teacher, I know how computers work, and how to teach the use of computers... oh well. There is a huge issue with upkeep of computers in schools, we might have 1 computer per student, but we still only have one tech and inadequate training for the teachers on how to actually utilize those computers. They all seem to assume that since the kids all have computers at home they actually know what they're doing, when in reality they have no loving clue and probably use it for the same things the teachers do - instagram, facebook and typing the web address into loving google. There's a big requirement for teachers to use so much of the computers each term, but then they don't realise how to use them, or bother training students in how to use them. Then other people think computers are a magical cure all to unmotivated students, when they're no different from any other resource.

Stoca Zola posted:At some point in the late 80s maybe year 5 or 6 for me, we did some typing lessons and played Grannies Garden on whatever computers we had at my primary school. I didn't see a computer as a student again until 1995 when I started uni; my first programming class we learned C but we did so from watching someone explain things using an overhead projector with transparencies, I think we only got to the computer pool once or twice for that subject. I'm glad they're at least trying to formalise what the expectations are on what kids should be learning and when they should know it by, because it's been left very loose before now and to me seemed to largely rely on what staff were available. No IT competent staff = no IT classes. Hell yeah Grannies' Garden. I used to wow the other kids on the C64 since I had one at home and could - get this - type with two fingers, doubling my speed. We did a bit of basic programming on that. High school was more about using computers for some basic web surfing, email and making pretty documents.

The best part is that they are mad that a good action movie was sold to them as a man getting poo poo done in the post-apocalyptic wasteland and when it turns out it could be female-lead based its just no longer a plausible story.

Alright, time for the real budget response from the (1600 members strong!) The Arts Party posted:The second budget of the Abbott Government is quite remarkable when compared with its last. Gone are the ideological tent-poles of austerity and impending economic crisis. Now we are suddenly in a time of (relative) generosity and have-a-go backing—Could an election be looming? Even if the main character did turn out to be a woman, is the fact it's a woman causing violent mayhem the actual issue here? You don't seem to understand what an MRA is. They are mad that there is a female character that challenges their belief that all women should be subservient to men. In particular to men that have "game". A strong, violent female character is basically the antithesis to that.
