Zaphod42 posted:

You're right, although companies trying to push shovelware by not letting people know how crappy it is so they only discover it a few hours after they already purchased is pretty shady.

Also I would argue Nintendo doesn't need to stoop to the level other developers do. Other studios have to worry about piracy and used game sales to a huge extent, but Nintendo seems largely immune by comparison. You look at the used price for first-party Nintendo games that are even 3+ years old and they still want $40, they barely ever depreciate in value.

I guess they could be worried about their new IP, but the whole "lets not let people play this so they buy it" is pretty bullshit business tactics IMO. If your product is halfway decent letting people play it will just make them want it more, so they can get the full version with more content. People burning out on the demo is a symptom that your game is a gimmick and either locks content or lacks staying power.

Well guess what, they're corporations, not your friends. They exist to make money. For one thing, demos take time and resources to make. You can't just cut and paste code from the full game and call it a day. Depending on the game, it really may not be worth the time and resources to pump out a demo when those could just be spent on making the actual game or other stuff. Try before you buy heavily reduces sales way more than it actually increases them. Not to mention, there's the risk of demos driving people away from the game, even if they would have liked the full product, since they tend to be specific sections of the game most of the time. Or in other cases, people not buying the full game because they're satisfied with just the demo for some reason. It sucks for us, but business-wise, there's very little benefit from making a demo in most cases.

How many people didn't buy Halo on the PC because the demo was so extensive that they just played that instead of buying the game? Same with Battlefield 1942. Probably a lot.

Nah the whole point was that Splatoon is the opposite of shovelware. It was contrasted to shovelware, not compared.

Lemming posted:

1942's demo let you do too much, Splatoon's is way more limited.

That said, how many of those who only played the demo would have pirated it otherwise? I think generally if you can afford to buy it you wouldn't just put up with the demo. Most of the people on the fence are those who are broke and can't afford it, so the demo doesn't really remove from your customers in that case.

In a few cases it could, and especially if your game is poo poo. But for good games I think the vast majority would pay, assuming they can and wouldn't be pirating it.

The argument that making the demo itself takes some money and resources does hold some truth, but its not thaaat much work, and usually you have to build several internal demos for playtesting or showing off to investors or whatever anyways. If you can't play your game until its released there's gonna be problems with it. But cutting things up or polishing them a little does take non-zero dev time.

That guy makes the argument that games with demos make less money, but correlation and causation aren't the same thing, and you can't just point to a few examples and say you've proven something. What if all the great games didn't bother with a demo because they knew they'd sell anyways, while bad games put out demos to try to win people over? Then its no surprise the games with demos still don't do as well. The reality is more complicated than that, but that's the point.

Yeah the bombchus are one of the secondary weapons I've been looking forward to the most.

Really hope there's a blaster + bombchu loadout somewhere.

I wonder how many variants of loadouts there'll be, or if it'll just be one or two for each gun.

Custom loadouts would be so nice but possibly OP.

After playing the demo I gotta agree with this. I'd imagine that custom loadouts would lead to roller+inkchu+shield with some reduced time to charge the shield thanks to the gear and just make an unstoppable tank.

Would be cool if true, but it definitely was not just for the demo. The final version has item sets too.

It might also have customs, but I doubt it.

Yeah like I said, I know for a fact, and they have shown many times, that there ARE loadouts in the final game, and you have to unlock and buy them. That is absolutely not in question.

But once again, we don't know if there are custom loadouts on top of that, maybe at a very high level. But again, I kinda doubt it.

Also even if the final game doesn't have them they could be patched in later, but again, I doubt it.

That's a basic feature of games like this. Loadout pre-PvE is probably a good comparison. Logistically speaking you have multiple primary, secondary and tertiary items which you level and they all have different properties, that sort of system does not lend itself to pre-packaged loadouts. It's a pretty safe educated bet that you can swap between Super Soaker/Water Balloon/Cannon Thing, Super Soaker/Water Balloon/Bombchu and Paint Roller/Water Balloon/Bombchu or however you set up your loadouts.

The game 100% has loadouts. This isn't for debate. The only question is if it has customs too, which it probably doesn't. :v:

Nintendo has spoken at length about loadouts in the videos. They have never once mentioned customs.
