Holy poo poo, no wonder people only really remember a handful of Stardust Crusaders fights but regard the part fondly. Most are filler but they get you fond of the characters, and when poo poo goes down, it goes DOWN!

They're not filler because the main plot isn't the main point anymore, the individual fights are.

He wasn't more powerful than Crazy Diamond, lets just gently caress around town looking for a dude with a bow and arrow.

Beat the guy who had the Bow and Arrow, but now there's a serial killer and his Ghost Dad is making more Stand Users so go deal with that, Josuke.

I like how Jotaro and Rohan take the work of finding the big villains, Josuke and Co. just kinda stumble into these fights. Other than that, it's Josuke and Pals cruising around the town, getting into adventures.

If they're not in love with Part 4 by the time Josuke punches a plate of spaghetti to "fix" it and figure out why his friend's intestines just exploded out of his body, then well maybe they should just leave.

I remember when I first got a few chapters into Part 4, I was really confused. Every other part set up the story and stakes pretty quickly but they had already found the guy who killed Josuke's grandpa and gave him a fate worse than death, now what the gently caress is all this about a bow and arrow? And now that guy's dead?

It's really quite different in narrative structure from the earlier parts, and still pretty removed from the rest of the series so far besides maybe (appropriately) JoJolion.

When I was first getting into manga, I preferred it over American comics because the story actually went somewhere. Even if the particular plot in question was threadbare, things happened and the status quo changed; characters moved forward. I'm a big Superman fan, but that dude hasn't gone anywhere in almost a century.

When I hit Part 4 I hated it because everyone was just wasting their time getting into fights for no good reason. Kira didn't even show up until around the halfway mark. Part 4 to me was a meandering mess, something Araki drew to buy time between Parts 3 and 5. The individual quality of each fight didn't matter. I didn't even think about it.

All this to say I was a dumb kid who valued the destination over the journey. Nowadays some of my favorite stuff is episodic. I reread Part 4 and loved every panel. Well, almost every panel. I still don't care for Cheap Trick conceptually, even if Araki got a lot of great scenes out of it.

Okay, the new translation might've helped a bit.

I didn't deserve Part 4 then, and I don't expect a lot of /a/, MAL, and the like to deserve it now. Their loss.

The great thing is that even if you go into jojo know the ending to things, it's still a great ride because it's all about the journey. It's not called JoJo's Bizarre Conclusion, it's all about the adventure.

Because it's the sort of "Pure filler" people who don't get Jojo are liable to complain about.

It has nothing to do with the overarching plot of the part. It doesn't really expand on the characters or the setting in any meaningful fashion. Tonio is never important again and never takes up the role of party healer or anything. It's a self-contained incident that in terms of plot mathematics might as well not have happened.

All this means there are people who will hate it even though Let's Go Eat Italian Food was one of the best things in Part 4.

I've just never been keen on stands that require the user to die, with the notable exception of Civil War.

I hope they work some of the Rohan sidestories into the Part 4 anime somehow. Even if it's just a special feature on the Blu-Rays or something.

I also didn't like Cheap Trick much either, but that was largely because it felt a bit like a retread of Empress and didn't really do anything better.

Those are some good points, but they apply to Superly as well, I mean except Tonio actually sticks around. Cheap Trick is similar to Superfly in that the Stand isn't really benefitial to the user, but it at least has a lot of comedy and doesn't take place out on a hill with no one around.

Part 5 has a lot of moments where Araki comes up with a concept so cool and crazy that he can't really deliver on it, like God actually heated up a burrito so hot he burned his mouth on it.

I think Superfly is actually pretty drat funny, considering Josuke is fighting a living structure and the only way to win is trap that poor dude in his eternal prison.

Also the alien guy helps and I always thought he was underutilized.

Notorious B.I.G wasn't a fight I enjoyed either, but it started with Bruno walking into an airport and asking a man where the airplanes were parked and admitting his plan to steal one.

Also I'm so happy there's a Stand named after Biggie Smalls you have no idea.

e: Superfly is bad because that panel with the closeup on the guy's calluses grosses me out for some reason, but your Stand being a loving transmission tower is funny.

You're missing the point, which is that Tonio is a GOOD FIGHT people will dismiss on the basis of being filler.

I've seen people throwing shade on D'Arby the Gambler for similar reasons. D'Arby the Gambler.
