I had a Genesis before I had an SNES as a kid and I just liked a lot of the music in the sonic games while recognizing they were merely pretty average platformers the series I have an irrational love of from Sega was Phantasy Star, which is depressing in its own way in how it ended up

my explanation for weirdos liking sonic: literally an entire generation of latchkey kids who were kept in their homes in the suburbs with nothing to do and nowhere to go for miles. the only thing they can really do is play sonic, and it's the only thing they can use to relate to other kids if it wasn't sonic it would have been something else. there's plenty of weirdos who are really into mario but mario has a big broad appeal so the weirdos don't stand out so much
