google lobbyist looking out for the FTC

“We believe it is critical for the FTC to defend its reputation, showing that it followed a thorough process and fully took into account the Bureau of Competition staff memo, among other internal agency opinions including the Bureau of Economics,” Shelton said in the email. “A public statement standing by the FTC’s ability to make a final decision after assessing differing internal views would go far in the international space to restore the reputation of the FTC, especially on due process.”

Multiple mobile operators in Europe plan to block advertising on their networks, with one of them planning to target Google's ad network to force the company to give up a cut of its ad revenue, according to a report yesterday in the Financial Times.

France’s second-largest ISP suspends ad blocking for now

French government intervenes in revenue dispute between Free and Google.
"An executive at a European carrier confirmed that it and several of its peers are planning to start blocking adverts this year," the newspaper reported. "The executive said that the carrier will initially launch an advertising-free service for customers on an opt-in basis. But it is also considering a more radical idea that it calls 'the bomb', which would apply across its entire network of millions of subscribers at once. The idea is to specifically target Google, blocking advertising on its websites in an attempt to force the company into giving up a cut of its revenues."

Blocking ads "just for an hour or a day" might be enough to bring Google to the negotiating table, the executive told the newspaper.

I'm kinda confused how ISP-level ad-blocking would work when things are being done over SSL.

DNS filtering with IP based blocking as a backup?

you don't have to see the actual traffic flowing back and forth to googlesyndication.com to know what it is.

Google Inc. will launch buy buttons on its search-result pages in coming weeks, a controversial step by the company toward becoming an online marketplace rivaling those run by Amazon.com Inc. and eBay Inc.

The search giant will start showing the buttons when people search for products on mobile devices, according to people familiar with the launch.

The buttons will accompany sponsored—or paid—search results, often displayed under a “Shop on Google” heading at the top of the page. Buttons won't appear with the nonsponsored results that are driven by Google’s basic search algorithm.

If shoppers click on the buy buttons, they will be taken to another Google product page to complete the purchase, the people explained. On that page, they will be able to pick sizes and colors and shipping options, as well as complete the purchase, one of the people said.

sorry it's no longer 2004 and the internet is not primarily where online use happens and search is no longer the entry way to online usage. we have these things called 'smartphones' and 'apps' are on them and 90% of the things most people do on them never requires a search engine

correct, as ios uses bing by default

but if you're talking about android, also correct, since google cares more about giving you the information you need via google now without having to search for it, and by organizing your mail for you via inbox

plain old google search is a 'dumb pipe' scenario and is going to stop being a money printing machine and everything google is doing is proving their awareness of that
