Cross posting from AusPol because I realized I'd written a Bad With Money post:

I know a guy who ran up $7000 in traffic infringements, which he had to pay the entirety of, after claiming not guilty (against his legal counsel's advice) to the magistrate's court with no supporting evidence... and being found guilty.

He told me he wasn't going to start a payment plan or anything like that, he instead was just going to wait it out "like 5 or 6 years" because "you hear about people getting off all the time - they just forget about'ya".

I told him he should just take jail time in lieu of paying, and roll it into his current assault charge sentencing (when its passed down). Which his lawyer told him would very likely be jail time. Just do it in one stretch. I was just joking, but he took it seriously and said it was an unnecessary suggestion because his lawyer was "just tryin' to scare me, man" by telling him jail time was likely. Yeah... Nah, mate.

This same guy shook a CPR baby doll to check responsiveness, owes around $5k to various TAFEs, is trying to get a personal loan to put a turbo in his wrecked car (he's lost his license btw and once he gets it back he immediately loses it again), makes extra cash by selling Ketamine and pills at bush doofs, and thinks carpentry is a "dying trade". Just an all round top bloke. And remarkably Bad With Money.

My former co-worker spent $880 on a BMX and left it out the front of our workplace.

Several hours later, he went out and found that someone had nicked it.

He felt that my suggestment he buy a bike lock was excessive, and claimed that "this wouldn't have happened in Queensland" afterwards.

He also spent an alarming percentage of his apprentice wage at the bar, but that's nothing unusual down here.

My wife's coworker had a 2009 Ford Explorer. According to the second-hand telling, "something with the shifter" was broken, and the mechanic told her it'd be a thousand bucks.

She had about 5k / 10 months left on the loan. She did not have enough cash on hand to pay for this repair, and due to some terms of her debt consolidation she doesn't have any active credit cards, only debit.

So she decided she'd trade it in and finance a brand-new 2015 GMC Sierra.

"My payments are lower!"

Let us know when she treats herself to something nice now that she's freed up that monthly cash

Path of Exile is a free to play diablo clone that's selling 'supporter packs' to fund their next expansion. These range from $30 to $1,100 and give you various cosmetic goodies (weapon animations, etc.)

From https://www.pathofexile.com/purchase

quote:

Payment Plans: Because you can merge points packs (purchased since April 20) up to 80% of the value of a supporter pack, you can make intermediary payments towards a pack and then spend the points immediately. That's basically just a kickstarter, without the branding of kickstarter. Reward tiers at ~1k are pretty common. Plus, selling only cosmetic items is considered the best pay free-to-play model.

I don't think it really fits this thread's theme.

No, you're very right and I shouldn't have called it single payer, that isn't accurate. Since the ACA its subsidized private insurance. I wonder if that is why so many in office were against the ACA...

Think of the funniest joke/saying you know. Now imagine I just wrote it here. Now imagine someone says it to you in conversation three seconds from now. Now imagine all of your coworkers and managers coming over to tell you the joke. Now imagine you're on your way home, and you check your social media of choice to see that everyone you know is posting that joke. Now imagine you reach your gooncave and your mum calls you and tells you the joke, and as she's telling it, your siblings and cousins (some of whom you haven't seen for years) are all texting you with this hilarious joke. You turn on the TV just in time to catch the lead to CNN's "Could this be the funniest joke in the world?" feature. As you frantically mash the power button on your remote, you hear a knock at the door and your neighbour calling out "Hey Sigma, you've gotta hear this joke!" Now imagine that day repeating forever, like a joke-branded boot forever stamping upon your face.

That's what happens when you allow catchphrases on SA. See also wom, cuck, and TYOOL (in fact, just throw a dart at the SAclopaedia.)

This model works if people feel they want to pay to keep the game running whether it's $10 or $20. I know there is a minority in F2P games that spend a fortune so the expensive stuff is just to catch ridiculous spenders. Really Star Citizen should be discussed here ahead of PoE.

It's hard to say. I sadly paid a bunch of money for digital goods, but then the gray market went crazy stupid on Reddit and I was able to liquidate each of my 3 ships for about a $100 profit apiece. I then went on to buy a $20 AMD special edition ship (i.e., some free ship codes attached to video cards that people were reselling), and bought another for my friend who helped me spend profit so handsomely by first introducing me to the game, bringing my total profit on an "investment" of $370 to about $250. It's not often you can get 67% returns on your money in under a year...

I went from Bad With Money to good accidental speculator. And it looks like prices have risen recently, because some guy who is desperate to be separated from his cash messaged me to see if one of my ships was for sale, 9 months after I sold it (and I thought, updated my thread). I guess the current market prices were too bad and he was scraping the bottom of the barrel for possible advertised ships where maybe, just maybe, the sale had fallen through and this was his big break!

A good friend of mine, on the other hand, is probably $1000-2000 deep on this game, and hasn't listened to my advice to sell sell sell. Then again, he makes comfortably more than I do and his house is paid off, so I guess he can do whatever he wants.
