While we're on the subject of huge fatbirds...our area is warm most of the year so there are a lot of food sources for scavengers like crows. So there are a lot of crows here, and they're enormous. Which is good for me because I love crows. I found this one in our courtyard a few days ago.... It's big. A few weeks ago I saw one that was so big I thought it was a raven. Before I got close enough to see if it had a beard, it flew off, but it was almost as big as my torso.

I live in SoCal and have a lot of trouble distinguishing between crows and ravens. Is there an easy way? I've read that possibly tail feather shape but that's not always visible.

Ravens tend to be bigger, and their beaks are different shapes. Their calls are also different. http://www.allaboutbirds.org/page.aspx?pid=2501

Away all Goats posted:Black lab puppies are the best and if you disagree with me I will fight you (with pictures) Put up your dukes, son. There is nothing on this Earth cuter than a pile of Beagle puppies. I played with a litter thirty years ago, and it's still one of the highlights of my life. I didn't even use the word "cute" in my search, because that would be like bringing a Howitzer to a squirt gun fight.

I've seen ravens here in L.A. and they're big! The huge beak is a good guide, as well as their croaking calls. A funny youtube video had a good differentiation rule related to calling: crows rock to caw and ravens just rock. (Crows rock their body while they call, while the ravens call is a hoarse "rock" sound without the rocking motion.)

I remember finding out how friggin HUGE ravens are when I was looking for a stuffed one for a friend who loves Poe. I thought "Oh, kinda big bird, sorta like a crow" but nah, it's not "kinda big", it's "loving massive". Wondering how huge that bust of Pallas was for that dude to get a good grip on it.

I have no experience with Grackles, other than taking a few pictures of them, when I drove through the south. Mockingbirds here only sing, sometimes at annoying hours, but they just sing. The blue jays in the area are bigger dicks then crows. They will actively dive bomb your rear end, no matter the threat to their own lives. They go out of their drat way to gently caress with other birds at a feeder and will even try to gently caress with the red-tails in the area. They are the Joe Pesci of birds.

The blue Jay's at the wildlife center I used to volunteer at got a big kick out of immitating a child being grabbed. Visiting groups would always do a head count, and the birds would say, "Heh heh heh..." and dance.
