So I got semi bored, loaded this up again to count my zen and looked at the pilot ships (yes, I know endgame is dead and there is nothing to use them for - that's my line after all).

Then I did a quick mental calculation to figure out the total cost in dilithium for say, 4 fleet polaron consoles, a bunch of dyson rep polaron DBBs and the cost to upgrade all that to mk 14.

Ha.

Haha.

Nope.

They'd have to adjust turn rates for Cruisers right up for that.

Also remove Turrets.

Or go the other way and remove everything EXCEPT turrets.

Clearly, they will fix the unintended behavior of using more than one of the same weapon type in the same arc by forcing the canon loadout you see on new ships: 1 torpedo, 1 beam array, 1 dual beam bank, 1 dual cannon to the front, and 1 torp/1 beam/1 mine/1 turret to the rear.

Clearly the true problem is that developing space combat content is difficult, and nobody is playing it anyway, so they'll be deprecating all of it.

There's three main problems with torpedoes at the moment. The first is that it's impossible to broadside with them, so they're pointless on cruisers. This is pretty easily fixed; give them all 180-degree arcs like single cannons (and the handful of [arc] torpedoes can get 270) and they'll be fine there. The second is a little trickier, in that to make full use of them you need to slap on one or two torpedo tac skills and that's a tough fit with an escort, though most of the now-common Lt/Lt.Com tac battlecruisers can manage to fit one in if they have reciprocity or attack pattern conn officers.

The third is the biggest issue, and it's something that affects science skills/vessels too, in that the skill system is loving useless. There's no reason to dump skill points into torpedo skills or subspace decompiler or things like that when you have to take points away from skills that would be used on every ship and setup instead. There was a lot of rumbling from Cryptic about tearing out the skill system and replacing it with a talent-like structure, but they pussied out and just went with the half-assed post-50 Specialization stuff instead so it's unlikely we'll see a major skill revamp before the game dies. Even if it were fixed, you'd have to do something about torpedo damage consoles, either rolling +torp damage into energy weapon consoles or some complete redesign of how tactical consoles work at all.

Now there's some ways to make torpedo-heavy boats work, but it basically requires going all-in with skills, expensive traits, and the right sort of ship and gear, and the build will be useless for anything that doesn't involve all that. And why do that when you can do a standard energy weapon build and do just fine? :effort:

MikeJF posted:

Escorts are the only ship right now without a special gimmick, and it really shows. Their thing used to be "can use dual cannons" but basically everything but pure tanky cruisers can do that nowadays, and dual cannons are kinda eh in the current PVE metagame anyway.

Just as a thought exercise, is there any way to unfuck the game atm without an enormous effort on their parts or a way that won't lead to insane bitching on players' parts? For example, I'd eliminate the upgrade system entirely but players who dumped millions of dil into it would be rightly pissed.

Properly fixing the deeply entrenched things like the Spec system or the Upgrade system might take a bit of effort, but they could easily undo the thing that's made everyone leave, which is the queues being stupid and easily failable. That's just tweaking a few numbers and removing autofails.

I'd simplify the way upgrades work so you can see an upgrade's costs all at once, and let you buy upgrades for rep items with marks. Which would tie the whole thing back together by giving you a reason to actually earn marks.

This is a really good idea and I'd go further and make each day have a random grouping of STFs that gave bonuses towards upgrades so people wouldn't just play Cure forever

Since the upgrade system was lifted wholesale from the Neverwinter refinement system, they could speed it up in the same way. Let people put a stack of upgrades in that window instead of one at at time.

I mean, it still costs an arm and a leg, but at least you can reduce four hundred clicks to three.

Like I've said multiple times, the two simplest things would be to 1) give dramatic (10k+) specialization XP rewards for finishing queues instead of the current meaninglessly pittance, and 2) unfuck advanced queues by removing all the hard failure conditions and make them like they were before delta rising. Between these two your average pug can actually meaningfully progress in the game again and some of the formerly popular but now abandoned queues (like Breach and Viscous Cycle) might see people playing them again. It won't get all the population back - they needed to do this months ago - but it'd at least slow things down and maybe get some people playing again.

Beyond that... uh, make T6 ships $25, drop the T5 and lower ships by %20. Most of the people I know who quit did so due to that one blatantly money grubbing cost increase. And yeah, the upgrade system definitely needs a lot of work...

Being able to craft upgrade kits in batches of five would help a bit too. Part of the problem with the upgrade system as it is is that it's incredibly player hostile. The idea is to trick people into thinking upgrades don't cost as much as they do, by making players feed it in 1200 dil at a time and not realizing that getting that MkXII weapon to XIV is costing them 50k dilithium, and similarly trapping people trying to upgrade in sunk cost cycles so that they dump a hundred thousand dilithium or more so they don't "waste" what they've already spent. While in theory this gets more revenue, even people who don't pay attention to game mechanics can still kind of "feel" what's going on and feel screwed and ripped off even if they don't know how to articulate it.

Ideally, yeah, upgrades would get a big revamp. Require people to pay the entire cost up front so they know what they're spending, and likewise remove the random elements from quality upgrades even if the costs involved are prohibitive. This isn't going to loving happen though since they're designing things like abusive F2P mobile games and lovely P2W kMMOs, so hey. :geno:

Well they did at least squish the absurd breadth of skills way down before F2P hit. Who didn't love having a skill for each individual energy weapon type, or for each rank and type of ship? :downs:

I guess that's part of why the spec system is extra double frustrating to me. It'd have been so good to back port it to captain leveling, but it would probably require implementing some form of respec (since this is Cryptic and carrying over existing respec tokens would be some sort of baroque code nightmare) and redesigning how deflectors and sci consoles and such worked (despite this being pretty easy to just turn into direct % boosts to applicable stats/skills), so they just got extra super lazy and we'll never see a proper skill revamp since this game is in maintenance mode.
