For those of you that weren't actually in band, yes the innuendo in this show is accurate, no we're nowhere near close to exhausting the supply.

This was an excellent setup episode for the inevitable trumpet dick-waving contest.

I have had a revelation while watching this show: being a part of an orchestra is literally the exact same thing as being part of a raiding guild in World of Warcraft. Every single thing they do has an exact analog, except for the part where the club gets a cool mentor guy.

Also when everyone gets their poo poo together you make good music instead of collecting imaginary stuff.

Actually, serious :goonsay: answer - you can touch a sound, because sounds are air vibrations. Stand next to a big, meaty speaker doing its thing, and you can absolutely feel it rumbling through you.

You can also touch your imaginary video game items, but you'd probably have to break into a building somewhere, take apart their servers, and lick a hard disc or whatever. Not very rewarding.

It's apparent that Hazuki doesn't watch the ED to know that Kumiko is obviously romantically tied to Kousaka. Kyoani artificially generating drama as usual.

I wouldn't say that, apparently the novels end 100% straight for both the girls so it would hardly be surprising if the series does too. Admittedly KyoAni also has a history of changing up poo poo in their LN adaptions and things seem a bit gayer in the series so far, especially with the ED for context, but it's not like there's no precedent. Would make all these hints otherwise kinda weird but it's not like anime doesn't have a long history of all kinda subtext going nowhere anyway.

At least either way there is brass band shenanigans to enjoy!

The show yuribaits at worse, but it's really not the case. Kumiko admires Kousaka as someone she could never be. Kumiko is someone who prefers to hide her feelings to save face. Asuka is this, taken to an extreme. Asuka has a strong, forceful personality, but cloaks all her actions behind an ironic distance. She can dish it out, but she can't take it. Kousaka, on the hand, gives no fucks about bending to the will of the majority and saving face. She's not the type to say much, but what little she does say is packed with meaning.

This is why I love these two characters.

I think the social dynamics amongst the band members are one of the most interesting things in the show. This episode added to that a lot. (Last episode was rather weak in my mind because I was worried that that aspect was going away.) Now I understand why there is resentment over Kousaka potentially going for the solo trumpet role, given Kaori's efforts last year, when before it just read as jealousy. Also we know what Natsuki's deal is, now.

I'm perfectly fine with Midori never getting an episode. Something like Shirobako already shows that really they don't need to particularly focus on the 'main group' at all.

Agreed, I really enjoyed the episode. It was good to see some of the stuff under the surface come boiling out, the president's frustration and lack of confidence in herself, the tensions between the first, second and third years and so on. If the show just concentrated on the main cast it would be a poorer show.

Still, my favorite part was probably that utterly incredulous "Wha..?" at the end, like you could hear the thought of "Me? Him? What the gently caress?!" just from the tone used with that line, I immediately burst out laughing.

I liked this episode a lot. I enjoy shows that have focus episodes on people outside the main characters. Though in this show's case, they can certainly use more focus on one "main character" in particular, since she hasn't really done much of anything yet.

I assume that's coming - I suspect the A-plot for the last few episodes will have a lot to do with Reina and Kumiko helping get each other past their really, really obvious issues (Reina's faintly unhealthy drive for success and Kumiko's thing with her sister).
