Trailer seems promising. But again, so did the trailer for Rush. Showed a bunch of fancy driving, then you sit down to watch the movie and it turns into a couple drivers spending two hours bitching and moaning about each other.

Correct, the load becomes a stressed member and becomes part of the trailer. I believe that's a section of a wind turbine support tower. Those trailers are built specifically for those parts, it also means that the load can have a lower overall height (as it's not sat above a trailer deck) and a larger amount of ground clearance.

It's not uncommon to transport long loads in that way, girders and large structure components are also carried on split trailers, or even just axle bogies where the load becomes the "back bone".

Some logging trailers are similar, although many have a drawbar as well, and the load pivots on the rear bogie as well.

The thing that stands out the most about Le Mans to me is the sound editing. They went to great lengths to capture the sound of the cars as best as possible, and it shows. Like that scene on the first lap when the 917 goes through the Ford chicanes...gives me goosebumps every time.

It's weird actually and I can't understand what the hell the problem is with sounds in that game. A lot of cars have the same stupid synthesized engine sound, but some sound unique and there is no rhyme nor reason as to which. Exhaust sounds are the worst, but again, some car+exhaust combinations sound unique. Even the unique sounds are nothing like the real sounds, though, they're muted and distant. And I could swear some cars sounded better in loving Gran Turismo 2

So, they went to great pains to give unique sounds to a lot of cars and a lot of custom parts, but they're terrible sounds. What gives?

It's a combination of the normal technique for doing video game engine noises where they just record the engine at 1000 rpm, 2000, 3000, etc and then just play that back, and the other issue if I remember Kaz's blog right, is that due to resources and scheduling they never had the chance to record with the engines under an actual load on a dyno, just in neutral in a parking lot. Might change in 7, supposedly they worked out some deal with Amuse to use their dyno but who knows.

It's kind of amazing how little racing there is in the movie.

To be fair, half the season one driver or the other failed to finish the race. A lot of the drama did actually happen off-track or abstractly in the points.

Even with the accidents, mechanical failure and weather changes, there are only so many turns in the Le Mans circuit. The introduction got me pumped, I loved the driving, the cars were amazing... but in the end I just found it long and boring (and now go ahead, crucify me)

I read that for Forza they used 8 microphones to record each engine, and they definitely used dynos. And that they recorded tire sounds separately on a Tesla Roadster (due to nearly no engine noise). I don't think they put anywhere near this amount of effort in Gran Turismo (I still get the impression GT is the better game)

razorscooter posted:

I'm terribly afraid that 7 will be like 3: a huge jump in technology and production values, but a much smaller game that barely feels like GT. Most of my favorite cars in GT 6 are low def and they probably won't be ported to 7 at all

I also dread the day Polyphony will discover DLC

There's videos floating around about the process, they did a lot of promo stuff when hyping up the games. They use a comical number of mics.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXNtTvM-_lE&t=111s

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rt_SQsom_nw

I think the issue Forza has is that they may get the sound spot on for certain cars, but if they couldn't find a car sample to record they kind of fudged it. They also use generic sound effects to reflect tone changes when upgrading the engine.. which generally worked okay, the game still sounds good, but it's not quite perfect.

Some cars sound like that, but in GT5 every turbo car makes the same noise and it's reaaaaaally annoying. Even factory turbo cars with recirculating diverter valves (BOVs that vent into the intake pre-turbo.) make that noise in the game, when the road car makes no noise like that.

The F1 was supposed to be built to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Espace and Renault in Formula 1. The story i always heard was that the director of Renault's F1 program wanted to know what it was like to go in an F1 car, and so the car was built with an F1 car's running gear and a carbon fibre body. Somehow all justified with the anniversary thing. I don't know how true that is, but i'd like to believe it is.

BMW also like to build silly cars along similar lines, behold the X5 LM:

It has a BMW V12, similar to that found in a McLaren F1 and some 570bhp i think:

Looks like a crappy old Transit van? Well, yes, kinda..

It's actually a test mule for the Jaguar XJ220. When they were being built Jaguar/TWR had no issues with high speed and handling tests, but needed to be able to test the engine in start-stop traffic and daily driving. So a Transit was bought and the 220 running gear and engine was put in it. This meant that everything could be tested discreetly. (It didn't have the XJ220 wheels when it was a test mule.)

Nice article about it, with pics:
