It seems like every bad decision with The Simpsons gets explained as "Matt Groening demanded it". It's a surprise how well the show has done in spite of its creator.

I think at this point it's just continuing due to raw inertia. Yeah it was actually pretty brilliant like...20 years ago. Now the only time I hear somebody mention it it's either "holy poo poo that's still on?" or the "yeah it used to be good/is complete crap now" types of stuff.

maybe they are trying to appeal to the same demographic that eats up all those stupid sitcoms. i can't believe the jokes in a show like two and a half men and that new show with charlie sheen (among others) while simpsons is bad, it's a step up from that.

To be fair, the Rick & Morty intro from last night was the best thing The Simpsons has done in a drat long while.

Yeah, modern Simpsons is not atrocious, it's just such a massive shadow of what it once was that it can be hard to watch, and everything about it is so lazy and safe. You're right that some of those sitcoms are a whole other level of bad, but on that same token, literally no one is losing out by not having watched Simpsons for the past 15 years.

Was it as bad as I remember it being in the late 90s/early 2000s and just leveled out at some point or did the early 2000s period just seem egregious compared to the relatively awesome seasons that immediately preceded it?

I think I was juuust old enough to be too old for Land Before Time. Like so many people I know slightly younger (or a bit younger) than me talk about how it was a big part of their childhood and I'm all "Uh, I never watched any of them."

Also re: that video, Lewis Carroll was never proven to be a pedophile (though he really, really liked little girls to an unhealthy degree it seems) and there's a lot worse things they could have said about Roald Dahl besides his mild anti-semitism. Such as his undying hatred for children (A A Milne, writer of Winnie the Pooh, also hated kids!) or how during early WWII the British Govt used him and several other minor celebrities as a secret squad to convince the US to join the war effort, mostly through bribes and sleeping with important wives.

That was my favorite episode hands down, and it is NOT on Netflix :saddowns:

What was the name of that episode anyhow. I think there was a part where Ed stepped into the background without utilizing depth perception or something and ate the sun

Yeah that happens. After some research I see it's apparently the episode from Season 2, One + One = Ed.

Sorry in advance for the slight derail, but here's a great article about how much of a douche Dahl was. (keep in mind whoever wrote it had a huge bone to pick with the dude, but he's still right)

I'm 34. I make no apologies for being way too old to be watching a lot of cartoon network in the early 00's.

I had so many of these. Sectaurs was the one that really should have succeeded and just...didn't. Like, they were hot toys for about 6 months, and then nothing. I had one of the big bug monsters where it was a hand puppet as well as a thing the figures could ride on. And I think, the main dude.

I wasn't allowed to watch it

I watched it anyway

The vietnam/apocalypse now episode was kinda disturbing for my fragile little mind. It was just 'off'.

I wasn't allowed to watch (but did anyway) Johnny Bravo and Cow and Chicken. My mum thought the former was a bit too sexually suggestive (!) and probably just didn't like the latter. Cow and Chicken made much more of an impression on me - I suppose it was Cartoon Network trying to do a John K style gross-out show. I definitely remember they once advertised it with these fake product adverts extolling pork butts 'n' taters as part of a balanced diet.

Literally every episode of Johnny Bravo was "Johnny tries to get laid and fails spectacularly." All of the humor of the show revolved around the fact that he thought he was a hot stud that could have any woman he wants but he was a self-absorbed, dim-witted prat that lived with his mom.

Cow and Chicken meanwhile was one of those shows like Rocko's Modern Life that hid dirty jokes everywhere. Most notably there was the episode (I believe later banned from CN) about "Buffalo Girls", an all female rough and tumble biker gang that comes in and eats all the carpets in the house.
