Anyone know if the other Tanaka Yoshiki anime adaptations are any good? Obviously LoGH is held in pretty high regard, and I'm also super enjoying Arslan this season. It looks like there are 3 other shows based off works of his, but I don't actually think I've ever heard anyone mention them. Thoughts on Tytania, Souryuuden, or Yakushiji Ryouko no Kaiki Jikenbo?

I still like TTGL but these days I just rewatch Diebuster instead to get a similar fix in a more concise form.

Tytania sucks and while I never got that far into Arslan I thought it was pretty boring.

In retrospect GL tricked people into thinking Imaishi was good which I think has been a net negative overall.

The new Arslan series and Arakawa's manga version is actually really good and not boring at all.

Yah I thought I liked him but it turned out that for the most part I just respect him way more than I like him.

The Arakawa version is the only one I've read, actually. I guess I just found it sort of disappointing because Arakawa + LOGH writer should be a slam dunk and all it did was make me want to re-read FMA instead.

They're all varying levels of poo poo, with Tytania being one of the worst things to air in the last 10 years.

You're already watchin Arslan though, and that's good. Arslan owns.

Imaishi is a really good director (and animator) that happens to have the worst writing partner of all time. Kazuki Nakashima is an absolute hack and aside from Gurren Lagann everything he's ever written is garbage rear end.

Imaishi was good. "Is good" is dubious territory but Dead Leaves and Panty and Stocking w/ Garterbelt are brilliant.

also this, and even with TTGL the biggest problems with the show are script-related

Can't forget LWA.

I think Imaishi is at his best when he has the freedom and budget to go wild, but with enough constraints that he doesn't go too wild and make a mess of things. That's why I don't doubt that LWA2 will be really good.

I think i asked in this thread about HunterxHunter, and I started watching the 2011 version on netflix. I'm up to the Greed Island arc, and I'm just wondering how much more there is to the series, and if this anime is finished or not. It seems like there is a lot more content to cover as far as what's been set up in the story so far, but there's only five seasons on Netflix.

There are two more arcs after Greed Island, and the next one is hella long. The manga is still ongoing, but the 2011 anime ended at a spot that serves as a great stopping point.

The anime's finished. There will be a few loose ends, but that's due the manga being on hiatus. The anime itself ends on a good point and ties up Gon's arc

The kicker is Netflix doesn't even have all the episodes. There's 48 episodes missing, and it's been that way for at least a year.

This is a weird recommendation request, but I'm seeking for anime that has a kind of setting/world that really pulls you in really well. Preferably elaborate background but not necessary - sometimes the best way to tell a story is to show, not tell. (Think back to the very first Star Wars released with references to weird things that were not explained, only kind of given a hint what they're about).

Thinking back to the anime I've enjoyed the most get the world building really well and kind of shock the viewer in a way by diving into the world without infodump and without neglecting the characters.

Thinking Neon Genesis Evangelion (my very first anime, never hit the same high), Juuni Kokuki, and Cowboy Bebop really get this right. I'm 50/50 whether Legend of Galactic Heroes would apply, the setting is a bit unbelievable/infodumpy, even if the series is definitely one of the best I've watched - And I unironically really enjoyed the "History" episodes. Of recent shows I'm aware of Attack on Titan and Sidonia, which I would expect to be recommended, just to get them out of the way. I'm slowly watching Trigun which I guess would apply but the series is a bit too humoristic to fit the "pull you into the world"-feature - and so far it's been even too quiet about what the heck the setting is about.

edit: I realized that one of the biggest pull in NGE and Juuni Kokuki is actually suddenly putting the protagonist/"normal person" into a weird world whose internal consistencies are believable.

Shin Sekai Yori is a real good recommendation which I've watched. Spice & Wolf is an anime I know to be real good but have neglected to watch, I guess I'll check it at least.

Blood Blockade Battlefront definitely sounds like what he's looking for since it manages to build a cool setting by showing a hell of a lot without elaborating on everything.

Mushishi, and thirding Blood Battle Blockade.

I'd have to think about it to find other shows, but there are definitely lots of shows with interesting and fleshed-out worlds.

Kaiba sounds really interesting. Kemonozume sounds like it fits the bill. BBB was a bit too "out there" to be believable, and Kyousougiga is plain weird at least the first one or two episodes. (Yet I plan to finish it eventually)

I've finished Baccano! - and Durarara. Sora No Woto I've heard of and considered sometimes, but moe girls doing war kind of stretches the believable aspect.
