In retrospective, I think that I should have made the max sec a much, much larger although I initially just used it to separate the volatile and other crazies from the general population before making a separate supermax for those who are unable to reliably work even with everything fulfilled. Also, MinSec and PC seem to be playing nicely together.

The current supermax is the old PC wing, I just swapped the inmates and added armed guards to the wing. They are not leaving that place for any other reason than parole hearings, and even then escorted. Also, I did not realise that Death Row inmates really do not need any infrastructure, they get their meal to their cells and almost allways stay there, so those parts are just a waste of space.

I just got this game the other day in the steam sale, and I'm fuckin' addicted. I kept restarting (well, selling and building a new prison) because I wasn't satisfied with how things were laid out, and last night I spent about an hour or so with the planning tool before laying any foundations. Today, I started building, and got far enough that I'm going to need to expand my kitchen and canteen (mostly the kitchen).

I lost power to the entire prison and had to build a backup and separate my power grid during a blackout, which gave me an excuse for a full search of everyone and everything while everyone was confined to their cells. I also fulfilled the nutrition research grant (with about 80 prisoners) during the blackout. Got everything back up and running and Solitary (about 30 cells) was only half-full, surprisingly. Now I'm setting up a third power generator just for my kitchen, and planning on a fourth one for max/super-max when I expand enough to start getting those assholes in.

One of my random prisoners:

Soon after I took that picture, a riot started in the holding cell. I like to think that someone dissed his game, and then it was on. The guards had just graduated taser class, though, and almost as soon as the door opened, inmates were dropping left and right. One guy (an instigator) died in the brawl before the guards got there.

Good game, and much more detailed than I thought it would be. I just discovered the joys of scheduling, so 8 am-10 am gets an extra armed guard and a dog patrolling around the bus dropoff, mealtimes get an extra guard in the canteen, and dogs go through the cellblocks while everyone's eating, as well as in the middle of the night. It seems to be working out pretty well so far.

I love the "Sentenced to 4 years for possession" tacked on at the end in my screenshot (the crime/sentence is randomly chosen, right?). The Chaos Dunk was devastating, but there were no laws against it, so they had to get him for something else.

EDIT: Also, as viewable in the picture, my workers managed to somehow gently caress up a construction site to expand the wing section-serving kitchens doorway. The staff door there works, and the walls seem to be solid, but the construction site graphics just don't seem to disappear nor are there any tasks associated to the construction.
I'm not sure I see what you're talking about from that screenshot, but I assume you mean the two darkened hallways next to the kitchen on the left side of the road. It looks like the floor is still dirt. Can you drag a new foundation over those inside areas (excluding the existing walls)? You might have to bulldoze a few wall pieces near the doors, but it should fill those areas in.

How many Capacitors are you placing for each of those power stations? It sounds like you have way more than you really need, you can place up to 16 capacitors per power station, 3 on each side and one in each corner. One maxed out power station should be able to run a prison for 100 inmates just fine.

Yeah, I figured that out. My problem was that I was over-stocking my kitchen with appliances and my workshop with power tools and running everything off the same grid, so when it went down, it all went down. I learned my lesson, though, and like I said, I managed to power through the blackout with minimal destruction (thanks to taser class and body armor) and found a bunch of contraband and a couple tunnels during the lockdown. I had to sell a share in the prison to get the money to buy the second generator and run new power lines, though.

Design your powergrid to separate the power for each section, and add switches. Minimises problems.

I usually have mine running along the outside walls during sleep / free time and on the inside of the prison at chokepoints at other times like evening meal. It makes sure every dude is sniffed before they return to their cell. I also have metal detectors at the entrance of every block to help counter digging.

Apparently if you leave a little gap in your outer wall (like a door locked open) and cover it with armed guards, it prompts prisoners to cancel their tunneling early and make a break for it.

How do you guys deal with Legendary prisoners?

I finally started my first execution and one of these animals started killing everyone as he as being led to his cell. Never got the 100% lockdown so had to cancel the whole thing. Had a lot of egg on my face.

I've tried 24hr Solitary, but they just bust down the door, which seems....unrealistic.

Yeah. That only works until the regular guards deliver food or the workers show up to remove the trays. Then they punch them, the doors the armed guards and on and on. And the worst is when they kill staff while you are looking at the intake/reception area to place new prisoners in PC.

I think I'm going to build an arena out of perimeter walls with a handful of cells. Put him in. And then when a maximum guy with Skilled Fighter Tough etc shows up, in he goes. Two men enter...

Permanent lockdown in luxury cells (includes shower, tv, phone, weights, and a prayer mat) with an armed guard outside.

They could alternatively be integrated into a minsec population, as they have a much lower chance of attempting murder. That said, the chance still exists, so make sure your guards are present when they mingle, or stagger schedules.

I'd love a way to automate connections. Attaching every servo to a DCS is awful. Or even better, a way to automatically add things to a room. Like setup a layout for a cell and then if you create that room, the items are auto-placed. Nothing worse than having to place 500 beds, toilets and jail doors.

MinMed canteen should have two airlock entrances, one zoned min, the other med, canteen itself zoned as shared. Zone max canteen as max.

Yeah, that 12 x 12 box thing really sucks and is kind of useless honestly. But maybe I'll try it for my next prison.

I mean, I don't know your layouts, but I usually do 2 x 3 cells, and my method is to draw 7 x 21 boxes (equates to 10 cells) until I get to a point where I consider it too close to the edge of the map.

Yeah, you're not supposed to be able to clone whole cell blocks. However, you can use it to do 4-6 cells at a time easily, and even clone things like shower/common/canteen/etc. areas to take care of the auto-placing like you were asking. Connection automation would be awesome though, that poo poo gets downright tedious.

Yeah I have a 12x25 cell block template that has 20 cells and showers and I just build the foundations then clone 12x12 at a time and fill in the utilities.

After you get down from 2x3 cells showers don't always make sense like that, though that said I find myself preferring more and more luxurious cells the longer I play just because they solve so many loving problems before they start. It'd probably be different if you had small maintenance costs per piece of furniture (like a 5 dollar recurring charge per phone, per week or some poo poo) but when it doesn't cost money to keep a shower, weight bench, and TV in the cell, but it DOES cost money to pay the guards to make these assholes not tear each other apart in the showers, I'll keep making sure that they show up to the canteen in a good mood, thanks.

e: Also it's funny to me that they still don't count time sleeping as time 'not locked down'. My punishment scores stay high even in hippy dippy let's reform prisons simply because every night, I have one hour of 'sleep' and another 7-8 hours of lockdown. Of course, we're tough on crime! Our prisoners spend 10 hours at a time locked down! Granted, that's from midnight to 10AM, so most people just sleep, but...

If you mean this by "does not starve to death," yes. Guards deliver food to those prisoners. Should any prisoners not get food, they may starve and faint, tying up medical staff and guards to haul and heal.
